Your home should be more than a place to live. I believe (and continually share with my clients) the importance of truly loving your home and taking the time to ensure it is a source of peace, comfort, and inspiration. The way a space feels impacts your mood and energy every day. That’s why I was honored to share my top design tips to spark joy in a recent interview with Authority Magazine. In this post, I’m expanding on those ideas, plus linking to the full article and recorded interview so you can dive deeper.
1. Understand How Your Home Makes You Feel
Start by tuning into your surroundings. How do other spaces you love make you feel? Calm, energized, cozy? Pay attention to the style, sound, or even scent that creates those emotions. Once you know what brings you peace and joy, you can begin weaving those same elements into your own home.

2. Comfort Is Key
One of the most overlooked design tips to spark joy is comfort. Choose furniture that feels good to sit in, keep your home at a temperature that relaxes you, and add soothing background sounds. When your body feels at ease, your space becomes more joyful and restorative.

3. Choose Consistent Lighting
Lighting sets the tone for your entire home. A simple yet powerful shift is swapping out all your light bulbs for the same color temperature. I love daylight bulbs; they’re easy on the eyes and feel balanced, not too warm or too cool. Consistent lighting makes every room feel calm and cohesive.
Use this helpful scale for selecting the right bulb for your mood.

4. Add Soft Rugs Underfoot
Design isn’t just about what you see—it’s also about how your home feels. Soft rugs can make a big difference in creating comfort and joy. Opt for rugs that feel good under your feet. After all, life is too short to walk on scratchy surfaces!

5. Soothing Colors That Reflect You
Colors deeply influence mood, which is why they’re an essential part of design tips to spark joy. Choose hues that feel personal to you, whether that’s calming neutrals, playful pastels, or bold, grounding tones. When you surround yourself with colors that make you smile, your home becomes a reflection of peace and happiness.
