Dressing Like a Room: 3 Cozy Winter Outfits for an Upstate Winter
Here’s a little secret from my design work: the same rules that make a room feel calm and pulled together work in your closet too. When I design a space, I start with a color story, layer in texture, and finish with pieces that have a little personality. Getting dressed everyday is no different.
So I put together three cozy outfits for this season, each one built like a room. Most of the pieces are budget-friendly, and many will work with things you already own. Because the best closet, like the best home, isn’t about buying everything new. It’s about giving what you love a second life.
My 3 design rules for a winter outfit
- Pick a color story. Just like a room, choose 3 or 4 colors and repeat them. This winter I’m loving plum, chocolate brown, cream and soft denim blue.
- Layer your textures. Crinkled jersey, suede, a cozy knit, smooth leather. Texture is what makes a neutral outfit (or a neutral living room) feel warm instead of flat.
- Add one statement piece. In a room it might be a vintage mirror. In an outfit it’s a beaded necklace or a fun pair of flats.
Outfit 1: Plum and Denim (the “jewel tone accent wall”)
This is the outfit version of painting one wall a rich, moody color. That deep plum top does all the work, and everything else just supports it.
- Top: H&M Crinkled Batwing-Sleeved Top in dark plum. The crinkled jersey gives you texture without bulk, and the boat neck is so flattering.
- Bottoms: H&M Harper High Rise Wide Leg Jeans in denim blue. A medium wash keeps the plum from feeling too dressy. Tip: reviewers say the sizing shifts by wash, so read the reviews for your color.
- Shoes: Rella Rosie Leather Flats in burgundy. Burgundy with plum is a great tone-on-tone pairing.
- Accessory: BaubleBar Mini Jane Beaded Necklace in Brown Multi. Glossy pink, brown and white beads pull the whole palette together, like a throw pillow that has every color in the room.
Where I’d wear it: a girls’ night dinner in downtown Troy.

Outfit 2: Suede and Light Denim (the “cozy cabin” look)
If Outfit 1 is the accent wall, this one is a warm wood-paneled den. Rich brown, soft suede, and light denim that keeps it from feeling heavy.
- Jacket: Princess Polly Jessalynn Faux Suede Zip-Through Jacket in brown. Faux suede is the cognac leather chair of your closet. It makes everything around it look more expensive.
- Shirt: Old Navy Heavyweight Crew-Neck T-Shirt. A thick, good-quality tee is the plain white wall that lets everything else shine.
- Jeans: Old Navy Wow High-Waisted Barrel Ankle Jeans in light wash. The curved barrel leg is the trend I’m actually enjoying this year, and the ankle length shows off your boots.
- Belt: Gap Factory Vegan-Leather Belt in Terra Brown. This is your “repeat the color” trick. Matching the belt to the jacket is like repeating a wood tone across a room.
- Boots: Universal Thread Mai Boots in brown from Target. Sturdy enough for a slushy Upstate sidewalk, cute enough for lunch after.
Where I’d wear it: apple picking or a fall festival.

Outfit 3: Cream and Chocolate (the “quiet luxury” living room)
This is my favorite, and it’s the one I’d reach for most. Think cream walls, a chocolate velvet sofa and a little brass. Calm, warm, and quietly polished.
- Sweater: Gap Factory CashSoft Relaxed Crewneck Sweater in Birch White. It feels like cashmere but goes right in the washing machine, which is a game changer for real life.
- Pants: Old Navy Curvy Extra High-Waisted Wide-Leg Jeans in Earthen Brown. Brown denim is the new neutral. It’s softer than black and so pretty with cream.
- Shoes: ASOS DESIGN Leah Mary Jane Ballet Flats in sand suedette. A sandy suede flat bridges the cream and the chocolate, the same way a jute rug ties a room together.
- Accessory: En Route Jewelry Petra Multi-Stone Drop Necklace in Gold. This is the “art on the wall” moment. A little gold and color near your face finishes the whole look.
Where I’d wear it: church on Sunday or a holiday open house.

Little by little
Here’s what I’ve learned from both closets and living rooms: you don’t need to start over. Pull one sweater you already love, add a texture, repeat a color, and finish with one piece that makes you smile. That’s it. That’s the whole secret.
