Gray Painted Oak Cabinets and Kitchen Makeover

Here’s a popular question, Can I paint my oak kitchen cabinets? My answer is always, YES, you can! Several weeks ago, we finished up a kitchen project that features gray oak painted kitchen cabinets. I shared the before and after pictures on Facebook. And today, I am answering all your questions! Let’s dive in!

Here’s the kitchen before:

Anne Marie and Keith asked me to do a kitchen consult to help them pick colors, hardware and an over all style for their kitchen makeover. You’d have to see their whole house to really appreciate it, but as soon as I walked in I thought they should do gray cabinets. Their house has modern pops of design with transitional bones. It’s beautiful!

When painting oak cabinets, it’s important to remember that the cabinets have a deep wood grain so you can see some of that grain still after you paint them. For that reason, I always recommend a satin clear coat over the top to help diminish the glare and highlighting of the graining.

We decided to paint the kitchen cabinets in Benjamin Moore’s Chelsea Gray. Chelsea Gray is my favorite medium gray paint color. It’s so important when painting cabinets to prep them right. We sand, prime, paint, and finish with the recommended protective clear coat. We also use a professional grade air sprayer which gives a fine finish! This is a project you can take on yourself, but it’s one I recommend having a professional do, so it’s done right and holds up well! Here are the section of cabinets painted Chelsea Gray:

We added all new hardware as well which helped modernize the kitchen! Anne Marie and Keith also added new backsplash to coordinate with the medium gray color of the cabinets.

Last but definitely not least, John installed a barn wood wall on the way into the kitchen. Check out this gorgeousness!

Yes, gray paint works well for oak cabinets. Actually there are many colors that can work on oak cabinets, everything from whites and neutrals to deep, moody colors. The important part is in the prep work, ensuring the paint will adhere well and there will be no trace of the oak coming through.

Simply put. YES, painting oak cabinets does increase your home’s value. Anytime, you update and upgrade your kitchen design, it adds to the overall value of your home. Tips for an Affordable Family Trip To Ireland

Hi Friends!

How was your weekend? I hope all is going well there! If you follow us on FunCycled’s Facebook or Instagram, you saw that we went on a family trip to Ireland over spring break, and I promised I’d share more details on our blog so you can consider a trip like this, too!

I HIGHLY recommend Ireland, and especially at this season of life that we’re in. Because Ireland is so much about the ocean and the castles, I think a trip like this would be tricky if you had small kids or if you and had trouble climbing stairs. We climbed SO many steps! We loved every minute of it, and so did our teens (14 and 15).

We chose to go oversees because we looked into flying to Phoenix for the week and the airfare alone was $3,900 for our family of 4. We went on Great Value Vacation’s site for trips under $1,000 and shared with our kids the lists of places that came up (and NO they didn’t sponsor this post lol). Their top 2 picks were Rome or Ireland. I thought Ireland would be better because Rome may bore them after 4-5 days of walking and looking at old buildings. It was such a great spot because it came with a rental car, and jet lag was no joke for us. I think if we didn’t have driving each day where the kids could sleep in the car, it wouldn’t have been enjoyable. They needed the rest!

We started our trip in Dublin! When we were in the airport getting ready, we met a college student from Dublin who was so sweet and looked through my itinerary to give me her tips for the best places to go!

We spent the first day in Dublin, and went to Trinity College first. It was such a beautiful campus and you can also view the Book of Kells while you were there. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time but really wanted to. So many people recommended it to us!

If you walk from Trinity to Grafton Street, you’ll see some amazing stores, an icecream shop called Murphy’s and the best hot chocolate I had in Ireland at Butler’s Chocolate Cafe. I was sad that Ireland’s hot chocolate didn’t compare to Paris or London’s. This was the only spot that I liked the hot chocolate!

We also had a really good breakfast at the Lovely Food Co.

We rented a car for this trip, but driving in Ireland is nothing like here in the States. The roads are more narrow than our driveway, you drive on the opposite side of the road, there’s no shoulder, and the speeds allowed feels like there’s no way you could actually go that fast. We headed to the Hoban Hotel in Kilkenny. I liked this hotel the best of all the ones we stayed in. Really cute design, comfy beds, and pretty good food.

Day 2

We headed out to Kilkenny Castle for a tour! This castle was really beautiful and very ornate inside. What set this castle apart from the other castles on our trip were the gardens. They were really beautiful, and it was built next to a river.

Be sure to go across the street from the castle for the restaurant, shops, and gardens. They were really cute!

My therapist told me her favorite spot in Ireland was the Rock of Cashel, and it definitely did not disappoint! It was built in 1101, and that’s hard to even wrap my head around. I felt like I shouldn’t even be stepping on the stones.

We headed to Celtic Ross Hotel, and it was just ok. It wasn’t that comfortable, and it felt really out of the way from the places we were going. Our very favorite meal was a restaurant right near this hotel though! It’s called Jack’s at Pilgrims Rest ; they forage everything from 10km or less from the restaurant, and you could tell. It was all so fresh, creative, and unique. I also loved the design of the interior.

Up next we visited the Blarney Castle which was beautiful in a different way. It was more like ruins, but it had beautiful grounds and an old house and carriage area you could tour. We didn’t give ourself enough time for this. I would recommend 2-3 hours! Oh, and YES the kids kissed the Blarney Stone.

When we asked the locals about what we should do, they recommend that we drive on the Wild Atlantic Way. There aren’t many places to pull over and get good photos in Ireland, but here are a few spots we were able to so you can see how beautiful Ireland was!

We also went to a town called Dingle (insert every inappropriate joke here). It was cute, but I’m not sure it was worth the drive. If you’re in the area, you should definitely stop by! We found an adorable cheese shop called The Little Cheese Shop and bought cheese and fresh bread for lunch. Cheese in Europe is so much better than in the States.

We also stopped by a spur of the moment castle on our drive back to the hotel at Ross Castle, and it was such a special surprise. It was completely rebuilt to an original state, and it was beautiful!

After that tour, we had dinner at Murphy’s Bar in Killarney. This was our favorite dinner during the trip! Definitely stop by if you’re in the area. We actually wished we had skipped on Dingle and spent more time in this town. We didn’t get to spend any time walking around to the different shops.

Then we moved to the Inn at Dromoland and stayed there. It was really pretty inside! Up next was our favorite part of the trip; we went to Bunratty Castle which is a huge village and castle with so much to do! We wished we had gone earlier in the day. You could easily spend 5 hours at this stop. They have a medieval dinner option in the castle, and we weren’t originally going to, but we changed our mind last minute and went. It was SO MUCH FUN! We ate with our hands, they had live music, and it was such a unique experience. Definitely worth the money.

The next day we drove of to the Cliff’s of Moher which is one of the most iconic spots to see in Ireland. The only day we had to go was during a huge storm with strong wind warnings. It was the most powerful wind I’ve ever felt! Despite that, it was absolutely beautiful, and I highly recommend it. We couldn’t even get a good photo because the wind was so painful. This might be my favorite family photo of the trip though. 😂

The waitress at Jack’s at Pilgrims Rest told us that if we were up at the Cliffs of Moher, we needed to make the trip to Burren Perfumery so we did! This was my second favorite spot on the trip. They have flower gardens you can stroll through, a place where you can make your own perfume, and a shop where you can buy perfume from them. I bought their Winter Woods scent and LOVE it!

We drove up to Aillwee Caves after the perfumery! It was a quick cave tour, nothing that unique since we have cave tours that are bigger in upstate NY, but the drive there was absolute stunning!

The next day (Sunday), we drove to Elevate Community Church in the morning on our way back to the final day in Dublin. Everyone was so kind, the music was great, and we really enjoyed the preaching, too.

Once we got back to Dublin, we went to EPIC the Irish Immigration Museum. The kids didn’t love it to be honest, but it was good to learn about the history in Ireland.

Then we walked to the oldest pub in Ireland, The Brazen Head for an early dinner. My airport friend told me only to go during off times or we’d never get in so we went to dinner at 3pm, and it was still full. Thankfully, we were seated right away, there was security outside, and the place was hopping with Irish music. People were smoking inside which I didn’t expect, but it was such a cool experience. So glad we did it!

Then we walked from there to the Guinness Store house! I was unsure if I wanted to bring teens to a beer factory, but most people that we asked who were from the area said it was their favorite thing to do in Dublin so we tried it. Once again, so glad we did! It was such a beautiful factory, they had a Celtic concert we were able to go to with dancers and a band. If you go to the top of the building you can see the whole city of Dublin and there was even a rainbow over the whole city! What a perfect way to end out trip! Then we took a carriage ride back to our car.

Many people ask if we’d go back. Maybe one day, but I felt like we saw so much and really have a good feel for the country. We’ll probably try somewhere new next time! I highly recommend going though! It was as peaceful, beautiful country with friendly people everywhere!

Charming Kitchen Update in Delmar, NY

Hi Friends!

Do you have a kitchen that isn’t bad, but you’re ready for an update? This week’s post is a perfect example of how our kitchen cabinet painting, tiling, and new counters can totally transform a kitchen at a fraction of the cost of a new kitchen.

For this week’s makeover, here are the before photos:

We did a lot of custom carpentry work on this kitchen as well. We changed the shape of the island, and installed a drink cooler. We also removed the upper cabinets to the right of sink, and installed floating shelves instead. The wood tone wasn’t bad, but our client wanted to brighten up the space with painted cabinets.

We painted the main cabinets with the color Benjamin Moore Chantilly Lace and the island was painted with Kendall Charcoal. We also added all new hardware.

Best Place to Stay When Visiting Magnolia Market

Hi Friends!

How are you? I hope you’ve been checking out our Instagram and Facebook feed over the last week because I’ve shared some of my Magnolia Market trip. If not, follow along today. I’ll be sharing more throughout the week. I’ve been to Texas many times to check out Joanna Gaines new designs, restaurants, and the other fun surrounding Waco. I believe this was my 7th trip, and I can tell you without a doubt, the best place I’ve stayed is at the Gathering Oaks Retreat Center. The 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom farmhouse that we stayed in is located right next to Chip and Jo’s farmhouse so we could see their farm animals roaming around. We dreamed that Chip and Jo would come up to the fence and say hi (it didn’t happen though – dang it).

I’m considering doing ladies Waco Trip for any FunCycled fan in early 2025 and renting out the whole retreat center!! We adored our stay in a farmhouse chic, full house with a view of Chip and Jo’s farm!! Check out some of the beautiful rooms in our stay at Gathering Oaks!

It was quiet, clean, styled so beautifully, and oh so fun!!! It’s a 20 minute drive from Waco, but I think it’s WELL WORTH IT to be Chip and Jo’s neighbor for a couple of days.

We, of course, visited Magnolia Home, Press, the Silo Bakery, and Magnolia Market.

I’ve been really excited to check out Ferny’s at Magnolia for the first time! Even though it had fewer plants than I pictured it having since it’s a plant store, it still had a really cute design.

Since my last visit, Jimmy Don opened a JDH Iron Designs store right across the street from Magnolia Home! Jimmy was so kind! He remembered me and came right over for a big hug, met my friends, and signed every piece that we bought from him!

FunCycled’s Trolley House Flip – Exterior Makeover

Hi Friends!

Thank you for stopping by! I’m an interior designer in upstate NY, but our team also does amazing transformations from kitchen cabinet panting to the details in this flip. Like you’ll see in this post, we do much more than just painting. We bought this old trolley station stop at the end of 2022, filled it, and sold it at the end of 2023. We’ve shown most of the interior makeovers on the blog already for this trolley house flip, but I wanted to stop and show you the exterior work as well.

Here’s the exterior of the trolley house before any work was done:

The whole front section of the house (the section without the porch) needed to be ripped off and replaced because the supports were completely rotten, and the ceiling height wasn’t even close to code. We fell through the floor walking through it at closing, and a 6 foot door wouldn’t even fit in the ceiling height of the front room. We ripped it off completely, had a frost barrier concrete wall installed for a foundation support, and then had the structure replaced. One last minute decisions that was a complete game changer for this house was the fact that we decided to peek the roof on the front to match the roof line of the rest of the house. It was originally flat. You can see that better here:

The original footprint staid the same, but the height on the front made it feels so much bigger!

The quote for redoing the porch came in so much higher than we anticipated so we were debating on removing both side portions of the porch to make it one straight porch along the back. We went back and forth on this decision quite a bit, but I really didn’t want to lose the original porch size because that’s so much of the house’s history. People would wait on this porch to catch a ride on the electric trolley car.

So we decided to do the porch work ourselves to keep it in budget and save it! John and our team did such a phenomenal job on this! We couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. Here’s what it looked like mid demo!

We also found out that this property needed a brand new septic… to the tune of almost 20k! Ouch! So while they were there doing the septic, we asked them to help us pull out the old shrubs and level the land. It made the yard so much nicer (not that you can tell in this photo).

We wanted to keep some of the windows, but they didn’t meet new code so we installed all new windows, but we were able to find the original door that went to the back porch and reinstalled it! So much better than the door that was on the porch area before!

Airbnb State Street Design

Sadly, I accidentally deleted the before photo for this design. It was simply an empty room filled with construction materials when I first looked at it. We didn’t move any walls or change anything with the layout. It’s the finishes that made all the difference. Here’s the design board that I submitted to the client:

One of my favorite design elements in the room is the headboard accent wall. It makes such a dramatic difference adding the accent wood, and it helped make the headboard pop as well!

Trolley House Flip Living Room Makeover

Happy New Year’s Friends!

I really wanted to share all the highlights of the year with you on today’s blog post, but I simply didn’t make the time to get that done last week. After the last couple of months, pushing to finish up our first ever house flip while also keeping the normal work flow up, we are the more exhausted than we’ve ever been! We all needed a week to rest, do house project that have been neglected (who needs to clean out their summer clothes anyway), and pray over/plan out the next year. We are so thankful for the rest, and hope to share some of the highlights of 2023 in the weeks to come!

We closed on the trolley house the week before Christmas, and we are so excited for the new home owner to spend the holidays in this little slice of history that we poured so much of ourselves into!

For this week’s makeover, I thought it would be fun to share the living room makeover!

Here’s the living room when we started:

See those tiny steps? Those aren’t up to new building code so we had to work with the building department to let us keep them. When I came to look at the house, those little steps were what my eyes were drawn to on the inside. I loved them! The other thing that wasn’t to new code was the windows. They came too close to the floor so we did have to replace them all. I was sad about that because they were in good shape and beautiful, but the new windows were much more energy efficient so it was an ok trade off!

We were also able to keep the flooring. We refinished it, and it was painted over so that was no easy task. See those bowling pins and that hutch base? We used both to decorate in the house. The hutch is on the main page of our website right now!

Antique Sewing Machine Bathroom Vanity For Sale – Tuesday’s Treasures

Here’re the sewing machine before:

We took off the top board and added a new board to the top and front. Then we cut out the holes for the new sink and sealed it with a marine grade poly. Then we installed the new sick and faucet on top.

Demo Day by Magnolia Painted China Cabinet for Sale

How was your weekend? We enjoyed so many holiday festivities over the weekend! From a Christmas Jazz concert in Saratoga to lights in Washington County Fairgrounds. It was so nice to celebrate and enjoy with my family!

We painted this piece with Magnolia’s paint line with their color Demo Day, installed wallpaper to the back panel on the inside, and added new hardware. This piece still has the glass on the front door, we just removed it for photos so you can see the inside better.
