What to do while visiting Magnolia Market!

Hi Friends,

I just came home from an amazing weekend away with a small group of girlfriends and thought I’d share some tips on how to enjoy Waco, Tx and some hidden gems you may not have read about before. This is my second trip… remember last years post Tips for a Trip to the Magnolia Market and Silos.

Waco is lovely and everything Texas is so beautiful to me. I loved the warm weather, the sweet tea, the friendly folks you run into everywhere, and of course all things Chip and Jo!

First stop?? I recommend an early start and heading straight to Magnolia Table for breakfast. We tried to be there by 7am each morning. Friday morning there was a 30 minute wait and Saturday morning ended up being a little over an hour wait.

They have an adorable coffee shop where you can get a drink or snack while you wait for breakfast.

We all tried different meals but I loved the french toast breakfast. They have homemade tater tots which I’ve never had before and they were amazing. Then came the french toast served with homemade strawberry butter. SOOOO yummy! The coffee was delicious, my favorite drink was the lavender latte !! You need to try it!! I can’t sing the praises of this restaurant enough! Every detail was so well thought out, the design was basically perfection, and the staff were kind and fun. I loved the black and white with gold accents. the subway tile, and the napkins. so soft and beautiful. The plates were beautiful pottery and the bench cushions were leather. I loved that they spared no expense and did it right. There is so much to be said in that!

Chip  even made conversation cards to help people talk to each other and have fun! We loved flipping through them and learning more about each other.

Then we headed over to the Silo’s Bakery. I know, I know, we just ate, right? We wanted to get there before it was too busy. We ended up being there a little before 9, I think. It was perfect timing. We saved our cupcakes for later when we were hungry! ;)

I enjoyed the toasted coconut cupcake… so delicious!

Then it was time to get shopping at Magnolia Market! I couldn’t believe how much had changed at the store in just a year. New displays, new products and some new layouts.
The back wall in the front section had display after display of mantels. So beautiful….

The rest of the store was pretty phenomenal, too!
Not to mention, the outside – also phenomenal!

We had a late lunch at the food trucks! I tried the pizza and we all enjoyed the Alabama sweet tea! It’s $8 per cup but you can keep the mason jar and refills are $2 the rest of the time. So delicious!! We sat on the swing and enjoyed the sweat tea for a while. One of our favorite moments from the trip.

We went to Spice Market next which is a huge building full of all different vendors. It’s super cute and definitely worth the stop!

Once that was all said and done, we drove to the original Magnolia store on Bosque Blvd – 3801 Bosque Blvd, Waco, Tx.

I love stopping by this store because it reminds me of where Chip and Jo came from and where many of us are. We’re in the dreaming stage, the small step that feels so scary, but we step in and trust God with the rest.

Then we went to see the Magnolia Hillcrest Estate. It’s on a busy road but is a beautiful home with a nice yard.

That filled one whole day… we started the 2nd day out right again with an early breakfast at Magnolia Table.

Then we went over to Harp Design Studio – 808 N 15th St, Waco, TX 76707.

Clint is the guy who makes the tables and some islands for Fixer Upper and his shop was adorable. It’s definitely worth a stop and if you look at the house to the right of his store, that was a house on Fixer Upper. The house thats Clint originally lived in, but now he rents it out.

From Harp Design studio we went to go visit Jimmy Don’s workshop JDH Ironworks! He’s the guy who makes the signs for Joanna on the show. We were able to stand on the porch and chat with him for about 35 minutes. He was so kind and funny and real. I bought one of his signs, too! I can’t wait to show you that once it’s hanging in my kitchen!

On our way back to Waco, we spotted these in the field! Pretty amazing, huh?

After that beautiful view, we went on a driving adventure to check out some of the houses that have been flipped on the show. I’ll share some of those details and the way to drive by to check out Chip and Joanna’s house!

Thanks so much for checking out our post! If you’ve found it, please share with your friends. If you live on the east coast, please check out more of our work… they don’t call me the Joanna Gains of the Northeast for no reason! :)

Barn Door Buffet (for sale)

Hi Friends!

How’s it going? I hope all is well! We’ve been creating some one of a kind repurposed furniture and designing away while also keeping up on kitchen cabinet painting. Thanks to all of you who entrust us with your home and furniture designs. We feel so blessed to be able to do this every day and we don’t take your decisions to shop small and shop local for granted.

I’m so excited to share this week’s makeover because I think you’ll barely recognize the before and after! Just you wait!! Here’s the before:

I took a long, time to think about the design. Should I go modern, rustic?? Do I keep the doors? Add new hardware? So many options with a piece like this because it’s such a basic design. After much deliberation, I decided that I wanted the middle door off to add cute boxes and more interest to the piece. Also, I wanted to add the X’s on the doors to make it look like two barn doors.

We used Gentleman’s Teal by Benjamin Moore, glazed it with Valspar’s Antiquing Glaze, and sprayed it with a protective clear coat. If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.

Adorable!! Am I right?? This beauty is up on our For Sale page, but my gut says it won’t last long so snatch it up if you love it friends. The crates are included in the sale. If this isn’t quite what you’re looking for, we have more. Check out some of the many new pieces on our For Sale page now:

Oak Kitchen Cabinets Painted Navajo White

Hi Friends,

How are you? Did you all survive spring break? My favorite quote of the week is:

“Spring break is like a trailer for a scary movie (summer break) that I don’t want to see but have to watch anyway.” -Scary Mommy

Don’t get me wrong, I love spending time with my kiddos. I just remembered in this one week how hard it is to juggle two full time jobs. Also, it reminds me that I need to find some summer camps for them so I can be focused while I’m with them and working hard while they are at camp.

For this week’s makeover, I want to show you a kitchen that we wrapped up in March. This is a typical oak cabinet kutchen that could use a little updating. With oak cabinets, you can always see some of the grain even after painting, but the transformation is still so dramatic. We did nothing to this kitchen except paint the cabinets and build a barn door for the pantry. Here’s the kitchen and pantry before:

Let’s start with the barn door. Did you know we custom build those? Here’s one classic design that made the whole kitchen pop!

We painted the kitchen cabinets with Benjamin Moore’s Advanced paint in Navajo White. We also sprayed it with a water based clear coat for extra protection and durability.

Ready for the afters?

We ripped the fronts of the drawer faces off and added barn board to the front with all new hardware. We painted it Simply White by Benjamin Moore. If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. We also added legs which is what I think sent this makeover into a whole new level of awesomeness! What do you think?

Such an amazing transformation, right?

Top 10 Favorites at the Architectural Digest Design Show NYC 2018

Hi Friends,

As promised, I’m here to share with you some of our favorite items and designs from the Architectural Digest Design Show last weekend. John and I pursued through hundreds of booths, products, and new designs while we were there and are so excited to share some of it with you!

  1. My favorite overall design was a furniture piece from Stephan Rurak Studio. “C-210 seamlessly integrates three elemental materials, concrete, steel and wood. The counter-top as well as the drawer faces are all cast concrete. Hand-blackened steel is employed as a veneer and finished with oil and buffed wax. The cabinet hardware is tip-on, two doors open to reveal rich walnut with adjustable shelving. The drawers are also solid walnut with dovetailed joinery. The piece rests on a concrete base that acts as a cantilever.” I absolutely love everything about this piece (and the custom lights on top of it)!
  2. The style of DBO home was a very close second for me! They create pottery and furniture with what looks like stitching on it. It’s so beautiful; I really want to do something like this in the near future with our table line of furniture!! I also really want to buy some of their pottery! So jaw dropping!
  3. Borealis Studio created an amazing display of their glass vases. It looked like it should be on the cover of a design magazine. Great job and such beautiful work!!!
  4. Source and Tradition also knocked it out of the park with their ceramics and pottery – hand made in the US. I asked if we could take one of these large bowls and make it a sink bowl and she said yes! They can be sink bowls! Who doesn’t want a gorgeous sink bowl on a dresser base? Email me to talk about customizing something like that for your home!
  5. One booth that stood out from the rest was Seth Clark’s sculpture and design booth. Clark was named Pittsburgh’s 2015 Emerging Artist of the Year by the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and is the recipient of three Design Excellence Awards – I can see why!
  6. John and I both were drooling over the ILVE line of stoves. The style is perfection with all the functionality most of us dream of. John loved the bells and whistles with his cooking background and I loved the design. I mean… please someone let me add this to your kitchen design!!!
  7. Aratini furniture may not be a style I’d put in my home but I think it deserves to be on the top 10 list because there’s no denying this couch is a piece of art. I’ve never, ever seen something like it.
  8. JM Lifestyles creates custom counters using concrete that looks like wood! It feels like wood, too! I could barely tell the difference!
  9. A for Ara designed speakers that not only look retro and fun, but also create a sound like I’ve never heard before.
  10. Last but definitely not least was the furniture designs by Bones Studio. I sat on that couch and believe it or not, it was actually comfortable, too!

There were so many more vendors and new products! We had a wonderful time learning about everything new and seeing some of the design trends. I hope you enjoyed the little sneak peak of my favorites. Orange Mid Century Credenza for Sale

Hi Friends!

How’s your week going? I hope all is going well! We’ve been busy building barn doors, redoing kitchens and restocking our store with amazing new furniture!

One of the new pieces that we just brought into FunCycled is this gorgeous mid century modern credenza. Check out the before pictures here:

We painted everything electric orange by Benjamin Moore, but left the doors in the original finish. I loved the contrast and thought the doors were so beautiful! If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. After we painted it, we lightly distressed it, and sprayed a protective clear coat over the top.

Pretty Little Gray Dresser Makeover

Hi Friends!

How are you all? Are you ready for our third snow storm in a month! We can do this! Spring is just around the corner. :) I’m trying to convince you just as much as I’m trying to convince myself!

We had a really great week! Wrapping up another kitchen cabinet painting job, and building a custom barn door and bar! I’ll share pictures of those with you soon!

For this week, I’m sharing a dresser makeover. Mostly because I’ve never seen a dresser with this shape and detailing before. It was so adorable. Here’s the before:

I love the legs on this dresser and the bottom drawer has all that detailing!! It doesn’t even look like it should be a drawer. This was a custom order that our client wanted to have us paint a medium gray! We used Chelsea Gray by Benjamin Moore (which is my favorite medium gray, too). If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. After we painted it, we lightly distressed it, and sprayed a protective clear coat over the top. All new hardware sealed the deal on the dresser! Love, love!

Even though this is a custom order, we have new pieces available for you to buy on our for sale page right now. Here are just a few:

Traditional to Modern Kitchen and a Modern Barn Door

Hi Friends,

How are you? I hope you’re having a great week and that power is back to everyone who was affected by the northeaster last week. My kiddos loved having a snow day with snow that was actually fun to play in!

This week’s makeover is a kitchen with a bonus!! We also added a modern barn door. We’ve built so many different barn doors but loved this modern take with a design that was sent to us by the client.

The top is frosted glass (which is hard to tell in the pictures, but looks amazing in person) and the bottom is corrugated tin. We also used barn door hardware track from Tractor Supply Company. John custom built every inch of it with solid, natural pine.

Check out the kitchen before:

Wait until you see what a fresh coat of paint does to this kitchen! When I stopped by to talk to Mike and Renee about the design of the kitchen, they were unsure if they should go gray or white. We decided to go with Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl on the cabinets because it has a slight green undertone which I thought would work well with their green walls. They didn’t like their backsplash so we talked that over and I recommended that they keep the tile and just stain the grout black. They did and it was only a $15 fix which made them absolutely love the backsplash.

So much better, right?? They kept the counters and island as is, but did change out the lighting over the island as well.

Are  you ready for the after pictures?

Turning a Mirrored Cabinet into a Shiplap Cabinet

Hi Friends!

How’s your week going? Was your kids week off relaxing or chaotuc? :) I can’t wait to share this week’s furniture makeover! We took an outdated mirrored cabinet and turned it into a farmhouse chic cabinet. With shiplap and everything!

Here it is before:

We took all the mirrors and glass out of this piece, the mirrors off the back and the glass shelves. In the back, we installed a thin backboard that you can find at the local hardware store, and we painted it white and distressed it to make it look like shiplap. Then we built wood shelves to replace the glass. We painted the inside and shelves Navajo White by Benjamin Moore. We painted the outside a black enamel and distressed it, then sprayed it with a protective clear coat. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.

This piece is already sold, but you can check out other new furniture for sale on our website here or let us know if you could use some help with decorating. Please use our Contact Us form or stop by our store at 272 River Street, Troy, NY. I also added quite a few other new pieces to the store!
