How was your weekend? I hope all of the mom’s out there were spoiled on Mother’s Day! I was out of town for my sister in laws graduation but got home just in time for Mother’s Day; midnight to be exact. I had a wonderful day with my two kiddos and amazing hubby. So thankful for them and even was able to enjoy dinner with my mom and family.
This week’s furniture makeover is of a piece that’s actually in our store for sale. Here it is before:
We painted it using Benjamin Moore’s color Black. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. After we painted it, we sprayed it with a protective clear coat. New hardware always helps, too. Am I right?

How are you? I’ve been waiting, beyond excited, to share one of my all time favorite kitchen makeovers with you! When Kim sent me a picture of her kitchen for a quote on getting her cabinets painted, my first thought was… wow this is already a pretty kitchen, but painting the cabinets will knock it out of the park! Here’s the before pictures so you can see what I mean:
What I love most about this makeover is that we change nothing but the color of the cabinets. It has the same counters, backsplash, sink, island, and hardware. We painted the whole kitchen with Benjamin Moore’s Wind’s Calm OC-22 and sealed it with a satin clear coat. Calm is white with a very subtle gray undertone and I absolutely love it! Are you ready for the afters?
And another side by side before and after for your Pinterest boards!

Welcome to FunCycled! I’m Sarah Trop, an interior designer in Upstate NY who loves to share travel tips. Especially to places with great designs. On our recent visit to Magnolia Market, the Silos, Waco and Magnolia Table, I compiled a list of houses that were on Fixer Upper that you could drive by and take a look at. This is a fun thing to do on a rainy day or after the store closes while you’re in Waco, Tx. You can check out more of our trips, and tips for enjoying all things Magnolia by clicking here.
The Original Magnolia Store (before Jo Jo was famous – she opened this little shop)
3801 Bosque, Waco, Tx
2. Harp Design Studio (Clint Harp makes the custom furniture on Fixer Upper and they redid the house to the right of his studio on one of the episodes).
5. The German Schmear House – One of my favorite (you can check out inside pictures here)
5517 lake highlands drive, Waco, Tx
6. Shotgun House – this adorable house is right near Magnolia Market and you can see inside pictures here.
625 S 7th Street, Waco, Tx
7. Pilot Show – yup, this is the house that started it all!! Who would have guessed? So fun to see where they started.
121 Castle Ave, Waco, Tx
8. Drama Drama House – I call it that because this is the couple who said Chip and Jo sold them a house in a bad area. When I went by during this trip, half of the front was boarded up because someone drove into the front of their house. Not the best area for sure, but definitely worth a quick drive by.
1902 Alexander Ave, Waco, Tx
9. Magnolia House Bed and Breakfast – this gorgeous home is also owned by Chip and Jo and you can rent it out. One thing to keep in mind is that it’s about a 30 minute drive from the Magnolia Market and Silos.
323 S Madison St, Mc Gregor, TX 76657
10. Chip and Joanna Gain’s House! Magnolia Farms! – We stumbled past this house when on our way to where we stayed at the Gathering Oaks. Just pop in the address below for the Gathering Oaks and just before you turn into the resort (about 1/4 mile before), you’ll see their house on the left.
316 Canyon Oaks Rd, Crawford, TX 76638
Just a couple obvious things that are common sense to me but just in case… please don’t pull onto any of these properties, try to approach the houses for pictures or stop traffic because you’re gawking. Give people their privacy please! This is meant for a fun drive around town to check out some pretty houses!
Bonus! David reached out and asked me to include his house (so you can have 11 now!). The address is 1403 N 5th St. He also wrote a book if you’re interested in reading it. You can buy it here. His episode is called “Active Boomers want to live near park”.
Here are some other addresses that may also be Fixer Upper’s but I haven’t had a chance to research them yet:
2705 Concord Street, Waco, Tx
3209 4th Street, Waco, Tx
2704 or 2702 Colcord street, Waco, Tx
2705 Colcord st, Waco, Tx
3317 Castle Drive, Waco, Tx
300 39th Street, Waco, Tx
Let us know in the comments if you know other house addresses! I’ll update this post with your helpful info! Also, remember to check out our other posts for more fun in downtown Waco and the Silos.
Thanks so much for checking out our post! If you’ve found it, please share with your friends. If you live on the east coast, please check out more of our work… they don’t call me the Joanna Gains of the Northeast for no reason! :)

I just came home from an amazing weekend away with a small group of girlfriends and thought I’d share some tips on how to enjoy Waco, Tx and some hidden gems you may not have read about before. This is my second trip… remember last year’s post Tips for a Trip to the Magnolia Market and Silos.
Waco is lovely and everything Texas is so beautiful to me. I love the warm weather, the sweet tea, the friendly folks you run into everywhere, and of course all things Chip and Jo!
First stop?? I recommend an early start and heading straight to Magnolia Table for breakfast. We tried to be there by 7am each morning. Friday morning there was a 30 minute wait and Saturday morning ended up being a little over an hour wait. If you want, you can make a reservation ahead of time here.
They have an adorable coffee shop where you can get a drink or snack while you wait for breakfast.
We all tried different meals, but I loved the french toast breakfast. They have homemade tater tots which I’ve never had before, and they were amazing. Then came the french toast served with homemade strawberry butter. SOOOO yummy! The coffee was delicious, my favorite drink was the lavender latte !! You need to try it!! I can’t sing the praises of this restaurant enough! Every detail was so well thought out, the design was basically perfection, and the staff were kind and fun. I loved the black and white with gold accents. the subway tile, and the napkins. So soft and beautiful. The plates were beautiful pottery and the bench cushions were leather. I loved that they spared no expense and did it right. There is so much to be said in that!
Chip even made conversation cards to help people talk to each other and have fun! We loved flipping through them and learning more about each other.
Then we headed over to the SiloBaking Company. I know, I know, we just ate, right? We wanted to get there before it was too busy. We ended up being there a little before 9, I think. It was perfect timing. We saved our cupcakes for later when we were hungry! ;)
I enjoyed the toasted coconut cupcake… so delicious!
Then it was time to get shopping at Magnolia Market! I couldn’t believe how much had changed at the store in just a year. New displays, new products and some new layouts.
The back wall in the front section had display after display of mantels. So beautiful….
The rest of the store was pretty phenomenal, too! Not to mention, the outside – also phenomenal!
We had a late lunch at the food trucks! I tried the pizza and we all enjoyed the Alabama sweet tea! It’s $8 per cup but you can keep the mason jar and refills are $2 the rest of the time. So delicious!! We sat on the swing and enjoyed the sweat tea for a while. One of our favorite moments from the trip.
We went to Spice Market next which is a huge building full of all different vendors. It’s super cute and definitely worth the stop!
Once that was all said and done, we drove to the original Magnolia store on Bosque Blvd – 3801 Bosque Blvd, Waco, Tx.
I love stopping by this store because it reminds me of where Chip and Jo came from and where many of us are. We’re in the dreaming stage, the small step that feels so scary, but we step in and trust God with the rest.
Then we went to see the Magnolia Hillcrest Estate. It’s on a busy road but is a beautiful home with a nice yard.
That filled one whole day… we started the 2nd day out right again with an early breakfast at Magnolia Table.
Then we went over to Harp Design Studio – previously located at 808 N 15th St, Waco, TX 76707. Harp Design closed their shop in January 2023, but you can visit the website to gain some history of the company.
Clint is the guy who makes the tables and some islands for Fixer Upper and his shop was adorable. It’s definitely worth a stop, and if you look at the house to the right of his store, that was a house on Fixer Upper. The house that Clint originally lived in, but now he rents it out.
From Harp Design studio we went to go visit Jimmy Don’s workshop JDH Ironworks! He’s the guy who makes the signs for Joanna on the show. We were able to stand on the porch and chat with him for about 35 minutes. He was so kind and funny and real. I bought one of his signs, too! I can’t wait to show you that once it’s hanging in my kitchen!
On our way back to Waco, we spotted these in the field! Pretty amazing, huh?
After that beautiful view, we went on a driving adventure to check out some of the houses that have been flipped on the show. I’ll share some of those details and the way to drive by to check out Chip and Joanna’s house!

How’s it going? I hope all is well! We’ve been creating some one of a kind repurposed furniture and designing away while also keeping up on kitchen cabinet painting. Thanks to all of you who entrust us with your home and furniture designs. We feel so blessed to be able to do this every day and we don’t take your decisions to shop small and shop local for granted.
I’m so excited to share this week’s makeover because I think you’ll barely recognize the before and after! Just you wait!! Here’s the before:
I took a long, time to think about the design. Should I go modern, rustic?? Do I keep the doors? Add new hardware? So many options with a piece like this because it’s such a basic design. After much deliberation, I decided that I wanted the middle door off to add cute boxes and more interest to the piece. Also, I wanted to add the X’s on the doors to make it look like two barn doors.
We used Gentleman’s Teal by Benjamin Moore, glazed it with Valspar’s Antiquing Glaze, and sprayed it with a protective clear coat. If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.
Adorable!! Am I right?? This beauty is up on our For Sale page, but my gut says it won’t last long so snatch it up if you love it friends. The crates are included in the sale. If this isn’t quite what you’re looking for, we have more. Check out some of the many new pieces on our For Sale page now:

How are you? Did you all survive spring break? My favorite quote of the week is:
“Spring break is like a trailer for a scary movie (summer break) that I don’t want to see but have to watch anyway.” -Scary Mommy
Don’t get me wrong, I love spending time with my kiddos. I just remembered in this one week how hard it is to juggle two full time jobs. Also, it reminds me that I need to find some summer camps for them so I can be focused while I’m with them and working hard while they are at camp.
For this week’s makeover, I want to show you a kitchen that we wrapped up in March. This is a typical oak cabinet kutchen that could use a little updating. With oak cabinets, you can always see some of the grain even after painting, but the transformation is still so dramatic. We did nothing to this kitchen except paint the cabinets and build a barn door for the pantry. Here’s the kitchen and pantry before:
Let’s start with the barn door. Did you know we custom build those? Here’s one classic design that made the whole kitchen pop!
We painted the kitchen cabinets with Benjamin Moore’s Advanced paint in Navajo White. We also sprayed it with a water based clear coat for extra protection and durability.
Ready for the afters?

How are you? I hope all is well and that you enjoyed our bonus post last week about the Architectural Digest Design Show. This week, I wanted to share a before and after from a recent dresser project that is now for sale in our store.
Here’s the dresser:
We ripped the fronts of the drawer faces off and added barn board to the front with all new hardware. We painted it Simply White by Benjamin Moore. If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. We also added legs which is what I think sent this makeover into a whole new level of awesomeness! What do you think?

As promised, I’m here to share with you some of our favorite items and designs from the Architectural Digest Design Show last weekend. John and I pursued through hundreds of booths, products, and new designs while we were there and are so excited to share some of it with you!
My favorite overall design was a furniture piece from Stephan Rurak Studio. “C-210 seamlessly integrates three elemental materials, concrete, steel and wood. The counter-top as well as the drawer faces are all cast concrete. Hand-blackened steel is employed as a veneer and finished with oil and buffed wax. The cabinet hardware is tip-on, two doors open to reveal rich walnut with adjustable shelving. The drawers are also solid walnut with dovetailed joinery. The piece rests on a concrete base that acts as a cantilever.” I absolutely love everything about this piece (and the custom lights on top of it)!
The style of DBO home was a very close second for me! They create pottery and furniture with what looks like stitching on it. It’s so beautiful; I really want to do something like this in the near future with our table line of furniture!! I also really want to buy some of their pottery! So jaw dropping!
Borealis Studio created an amazing display of their glass vases. It looked like it should be on the cover of a design magazine. Great job and such beautiful work!!!
Source and Tradition also knocked it out of the park with their ceramics and pottery – hand made in the US. I asked if we could take one of these large bowls and make it a sink bowl and she said yes! They can be sink bowls! Who doesn’t want a gorgeous sink bowl on a dresser base? Email me to talk about customizing something like that for your home!
One booth that stood out from the rest was Seth Clark’s sculpture and design booth. Clark was named Pittsburgh’s 2015 Emerging Artist of the Year by the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts and is the recipient of three Design Excellence Awards – I can see why!
John and I both were drooling over the ILVE line of stoves. The style is perfection with all the functionality most of us dream of. John loved the bells and whistles with his cooking background and I loved the design. I mean… please someone let me add this to your kitchen design!!!
Aratini furniture may not be a style I’d put in my home but I think it deserves to be on the top 10 list because there’s no denying this couch is a piece of art. I’ve never, ever seen something like it.
JM Lifestyles creates custom counters using concrete that looks like wood! It feels like wood, too! I could barely tell the difference!
A for Ara designed speakers that not only look retro and fun, but also create a sound like I’ve never heard before.
Last but definitely not least was the furniture designs by Bones Studio. I sat on that couch and believe it or not, it was actually comfortable, too!
There were so many more vendors and new products! We had a wonderful time learning about everything new and seeing some of the design trends. I hope you enjoyed the little sneak peak of my favorites. If you’d like help with designs, please use our Contact Us form to request an Interior Design Consult.
How are you today? I hope you had a great week! John and I went away to the Architectural Digests Designer Show in NYC and I’ll be sharing more about my favorite finds on the blog soon. Stay tuned!

How’s your week going? I hope all is going well! We’ve been busy building barn doors, redoing kitchens and restocking our store with amazing new furniture!
One of the new pieces that we just brought into FunCycled is this gorgeous mid century modern credenza. Check out the before pictures here:
We painted everything electric orange by Benjamin Moore, but left the doors in the original finish. I loved the contrast and thought the doors were so beautiful! If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. After we painted it, we lightly distressed it, and sprayed a protective clear coat over the top.
