Pretty Little Gray Dresser Makeover

Hi Friends!

How are you all? Are you ready for our third snow storm in a month! We can do this! Spring is just around the corner. :) I’m trying to convince you just as much as I’m trying to convince myself!

We had a really great week! Wrapping up another kitchen cabinet painting job, and building a custom barn door and bar! I’ll share pictures of those with you soon!

For this week, I’m sharing a dresser makeover. Mostly because I’ve never seen a dresser with this shape and detailing before. It was so adorable. Here’s the before:

I love the legs on this dresser and the bottom drawer has all that detailing!! It doesn’t even look like it should be a drawer. This was a custom order that our client wanted to have us paint a medium gray! We used Chelsea Gray by Benjamin Moore (which is my favorite medium gray, too). If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. After we painted it, we lightly distressed it, and sprayed a protective clear coat over the top. All new hardware sealed the deal on the dresser! Love, love!

Even though this is a custom order, we have new pieces available for you to buy on our for sale page right now. Here are just a few:

Traditional to Modern Kitchen and a Modern Barn Door

Hi Friends,

How are you? I hope you’re having a great week and that power is back to everyone who was affected by the northeaster last week. My kiddos loved having a snow day with snow that was actually fun to play in!

This week’s makeover is a kitchen with a bonus!! We also added a modern barn door. We’ve built so many different barn doors but loved this modern take with a design that was sent to us by the client.

The top is frosted glass (which is hard to tell in the pictures, but looks amazing in person) and the bottom is corrugated tin. We also used barn door hardware track from Tractor Supply Company. John custom built every inch of it with solid, natural pine.

Check out the kitchen before:

Wait until you see what a fresh coat of paint does to this kitchen! When I stopped by to talk to Mike and Renee about the design of the kitchen, they were unsure if they should go gray or white. We decided to go with Benjamin Moore’s Gray Owl on the cabinets because it has a slight green undertone which I thought would work well with their green walls. They didn’t like their backsplash so we talked that over and I recommended that they keep the tile and just stain the grout black. They did and it was only a $15 fix which made them absolutely love the backsplash.

So much better, right?? They kept the counters and island as is, but did change out the lighting over the island as well.

Turning a Mirrored Cabinet into a Shiplap Cabinet

Hi Friends!

How’s your week going? Was your kids week off relaxing or chaotuc? :) I can’t wait to share this week’s furniture makeover! We took an outdated mirrored cabinet and turned it into a farmhouse chic cabinet. With shiplap and everything!

Here it is before:

We took all the mirrors and glass out of this piece, the mirrors off the back and the glass shelves. In the back, we installed a thin backboard that you can find at the local hardware store, and we painted it white and distressed it to make it look like shiplap. Then we built wood shelves to replace the glass. We painted the inside and shelves Navajo White by Benjamin Moore. We painted the outside a black enamel and distressed it, then sprayed it with a protective clear coat. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.

This piece is already sold, but you can check out other new furniture for sale on our website here or let us know if you could use some help with decorating. Please use our Contact Us form or stop by our store at 272 River Street, Troy, NY. I also added quite a few other new pieces to the store!

Birch Tree Dresser – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How are you? I hope you’re having a great week off with your kids (if this is  your school break). We are visiting friends and getting some valuable (and fun) family time in!

With this week’s furniture makeover, I had my mom in mind the whole time. She loves birch trees, she says that they make her smile!

We started with this dresser:

I don’t know how many of you know this, but I use to paint… like paintings you would hang on the wall. I didn’t paint furniture first. So I find it really relaxing to paint designs on furniture. One of our plans for this year was to have me clear some other things off my schedule so I could get back to the paintbrush again. I find it so inspiring and freeing to create designs I’ve never seen before.

This dresser seemed like the right layout to add birch trees. The top two doors  almost looked like two canvases just waiting for a hand painted finish. I did a drippy finish on the paint job using Benjamin Moore’s Sea Haze and a black enamel. I did everything from watering it down to create the dripping to splattering the black onto the dresser. Whatever I could do to add a lot of texture and visual interest.

Then I did the hand painted birch tree design on the front.

Here’s the whole dresser! We also added new hardware and sprayed it with a protective clear coat:

Rustic Bohemian Vanity for Sale – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends,

How are you? I hope you had a great weekend! We were busy, busy! We even did a pop up shop with a bunch of other downtown Troy shop owners at Colonie Center this weekend. A big welcome to all of you who are stopping by the blog after meeting us for the first time at that event.

Here we were… all set up!

For this week’s furniture makeover, I wanted to show you how we redid the vanity that was for sale at the show. Now…. this isn’t everyone’s style but it’s a hand painted finish that I have been studying for years now and really love the look of. It’s more like using furniture as a canvas instead of a typical paint job. You may even like the vanity more in its original state:

Let me start by sharing the quotes from my children when they saw me working on it!
“It looks like someone got shot and the blood is dripping down the dresser” -Harmony
“No, it looks like someone blended up rotten food and strawberries and dumped it all over it!” -Josh
“No, no! It looks like strawberry juice and bird poop dumped all over it.” -Harmony

Wow guys! Thanks so much! lol Good thing I really liked it otherwise my feelings might have been hurt!

This finish was actually really tricky… I blended Grand Hotel Flower Red and Mohair Blue paint that we sell in our store. It’s RePurpose Chroma Color paints that don’t require sanding or priming before you paint. I did a drippy, distressed finish. Then sprayed everything with a protective clear coat and added new hardware of course! Ready for the after?

THE BEST NEWS?? This vanity is available online and in our store now! From an Old to a New White Kitchen – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How are you? I hope your week is going well! Everything is going really well around here. I can’t take professional pictures of our most recent basement project until all of the accents are installed, but I wanted to share a sneak peak of some of the work we’ve done so far… we built a custom barn door, built a new wall, and added a kitchenette area.

Susan and Jerry also let us install a black shiplap wall and black floating shelves.

For this week’s Tuesday’s Treasures, I want to show you a recent kitchen cabinet job that we finished. Not that the kitchen cabinets were the biggest part of the transformation, but I still thought you’d enjoy the before and after. It’s hard to tell in the before pictures but the white cabinets were more of a creamy white and in need of an update. Here it is before:

We painted the whole kitchen with Benjamine Moore’s Chantilly Lace and sealed it with a satin clear coat. We added all new hardware as well! Klassic Stone in Albany replaced the counters with a gorgeous quartz that looks like marble. Rory and her husband did a great job picking out wall colors and tiling.
Here’s the after!

Two Cedar Trunk Makeovers

Hi Friends,

How was your week? We started a mid-century modern basement renovation project so that has been a dream come true for me. I love mid century designs and it’s not every day that someone is willing to go with that style. Susan has been a dream client; trusting, patient and willing to let me think outside the box. Can’t wait to show you all, the finished project!

This week’s project is as far from mid-century modern as possible, but it was a sweet Christmas present that we were able to custom make for Charlotte’s kiddos. They had a rough year.

Vera loves birds so we went with a gray trunk with yellow birds! People often ask if I use stencils, but these designs are not with stencils; they are hand painted originals by yours truly.

For a little more masculine vibe, we went with a dark gray trunk with birch trees for Raymond.

These pieces are not available to purchase, but you can check out other new furniture for sale on our website here or let us know if you could use some help with decorating. Please use our Contact Us form or stop by our store at 272 River Street, Troy, NY. I also added quite a few other new pieces to the store!

Benjamin Moore’s Wind’s Breath Painted Kitchen Cabinets

  1. Hi Friends,

How are you? I hope you’re having a good week so far! I’m excited to show you this week’s makeover. This kitchen project is different because I thought the kitchen was pretty to begin with! The painted cabinets only enhanced the beauty of this kitchen. Here’s the kitchen before:

I loved the old wood in the kitchen so I recommended adding barn board to the back of the island.  Check out the difference:

Our clients also asked if we could take the glass out of the upper cabinet doors and install wood instead. I’m so glad they requested this option, I think it made the kitchen much more updated. We painted the whole kitchen with Benjamine Moore’s Wind’s Breath and sealed it with a satin clear coat. We added all new hardware as well!

Light Gray Dresser Set

Hi Friends!

How was your week? We had a nice one and the boys even went camping… in a cabin! :) I was happy to stay home in the warmth and hold down the fort until they came back!

For this week’s furniture makeover, I’m excited to show you this dresser set that was redone as a custom order. It’s hard to tell from the picture but there was a lot of surface damage on these pieces. Scratches and dings!  Here they are before:

We painted it using Benjamin Moore’s color Silver Fox. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. After we painted it, we distressed it lightly and sprayed it with a protective clear coat. New hardware always helps.

Ready for the after??

Empire Dresser Makeover

Hi Friends!

How was your first week in the 2018? If you’re not from upstate NY you may not know that we’ve had record cold temperatures this week! Cold temperature and paint don’t like either other too much. So we had to crank up the heat to keep our paint building warm enough for the paint to cure correctly. I’m a little scared to see what our heat bill is going to be this month. Also, our 1805 house is pretty drafty! Last year was so mild that I forgot what a typical upstate NY winter was going to feel like in our old/new to us home. We also decluttered from Christmas and I love seeing the house come back together again!

For this week’s furniture makeover, I want to share a gorgeous empire dresser that we think is probably from the late 1800’s/early 1900’s. The dovetailing is hand done and the piece is absolutely beautiful. Here it is before:

It had quite a bit of veneer damage on the box and very top drawer, but the fronts of the rest of the drawers were in good shape! I just didn’t like the color of the drawer fronts – too orange for me. So, we repaired all of the damaged veneer and painted the outside with Benjamin Moore’s color Gentleman’s Gray. Then we sanded down the drawer fronts and stained them with  Minwax’s Dark Walnut.  New hardware was a must and I wanted to give this piece a feminine touch when choosing hardware.

If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. After we painted it, we glazed it lightly and sprayed it with a protective clear coat.  Then the new hardware .

Ready for the after??
