Navy Striped Nursery Furniture – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends,

I hope you had a great week!!  Another hectic week here at FunCycled with lots of pieces selling and expanding the business by adding some new aspects. I’ll tell you more about those soon!

This week’s transformation was a custom order for Chelsea and Jonathan’s baby. He’s coming in October so we wanted to have the room ready for him in September just in case. Chelsea was fun to work with because she genuinely loves design but also trusted my opinion on some design ideas. I enjoyed thinking through every detail of these pieces. She wanted a tall dresser instead of a long dresser, but also wanted something to change the baby on. I recommended using desk because it’s deep enough and has storage but could be more usable as her son grows. I wish I had thought to do that instead of getting a changing table for my little ones.

Here are the pieces before. I had started prepping them when I remembered to take a picture (they weren’t this bad to begin with. :)
new 239
new 238

We painted the box with the color Old Navy by Benjamin Moore. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. As you can see with the picture above, we sanded down to the wood on the top where the stripe is and then stained it. Once that was done, we taped off the stained section and painted it navy. After that had been dry for a couple days, we taped it off again and painted it with a creamy white for the stripes.

Ready for the afters?

07292015-1-mark_19931834739_o 07292015-2-mark_19931825379_oI love the hardware for this piece because it’s very kid friendly. The handles bend so if a kiddos falls into them they wouldn’t get hurt.

Thank you Chelsea and Jonathan for letting us be a special part of your little miracle’s room. Here’s a quick before and after picture for Pinterest!

Chic Industrial Hutch Makeover – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

Can you believe school is starting in two weeks? For many of you, it’s already started. I can’t believe summer break is almost over. This summer has not been what I expected it to be, but I not saying that in a bad way. I didn’t expect the store to be as busy as it was. We made it through and I’ve learned so much for next year. I’ve learned how to manage a busy work schedule. I’ve learned how to say no… if you know me at all you know how hard that is for me. At the same time, I’ve missed my kids. Next summer I’ll definitely get some extra help so I can be with them more. I’ve missed my friends because almost every night I worked after the kids went to bed until midnight. I say all that to say anything worth doing is worth growing through. If it doesn’t challenge you, it probably won’t change you. A friend said the other day that my life is a vacation. In some ways it was a compliment and also showed me that I’m faking it well to her apparently. At least she knows I enjoy my work. I’m doing what I love every day, but my life is DEFINITELY not a vacation. Running a business like this requires so very many hours, hot days, heavy lifting, and taxes. So much taxes. lol

Someone also asked me the other day how I did everything I do. How do I balance work and family and church and friends? I replied with this…
not by my strength

Thanks to the Lord who really did give me His strength on days that seemed too short for the to do lists, when the nights seemed to end too quickly and the morning came too soon. He lifted me up and He will continue.

So I say thank you for the yesterdays and for what tomorrows He may give me. If you feel this way, too, lean heavily into Him. Ask for His strength. Read the Bible for encouragement. Be part of a church family who will lift you up and love on you like no one ever has. He is faithful.

Oh and some exciting news!! As of this week we will be a Repurpose Repaint Retailer. It’s a DIY water based paint (not chalk paint) that doesn’t require sanding. It’s a perfect option for you DIYers out there that love to get your hands dirty and are ok with brushed finish.
Recolor Paint Retailer

As for the makeover today, I wanted to share this hutch transformation. If you liked our Rustic Chic Dresser Set, you will probably like this hutch transformation, too!

Before:

cell-phone-before-shots_19955584298_o

We removed the fancy details on each drawer and the inside frame on the doors. That gave us the depth we would need to add wood to the front.

Once we did that, we used aged wood so it had a naturally gray finish. I didn’t stain or do anything to the color of the wood. Just stained the side where the cuts were to make it match the original gray color of the wood. If you end up trying a project like this, you have to be very careful to keep the wood exactly the right size so it sits perfectly on the drawer.

We painted the box Simply White by Benjamin Moore. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. Ready for the afters?

How to paint furniture with an aged pewter finish? – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

I’m coming to you today with a fun transformation in a finish that I’ve wanted to try for a very long time! Saying that a painting technique is a first for me after painting furniture for about 4 years feels weird. It was so much fun to create and have a challenge. I read all different tutorials and decided to use a few techniques from each that made sense to me.

I took pictures of the steps of this makeover. Then this past week I forgot my phone was in my back pocket and dropped it in the toilet. I didn’t even know it dropped so I also peed on it and flushed it. TMI? Maybe. It made you laugh though, right? Smile? Anything?? You KNOW you did. Lol! Needless to say my phone had no more hope of coming back to life and I lost all of my photos. Sad day. I do have the before and after so we can talk about the in between steps, ok?

Here it is before:

new 236

We sanded it down and painted it using Behr’s color Cracked Pepper.

behr cracked pepperIf you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How To Paint Furniture post.
Painting it the dark gray gave me the deep base that I wanted to have show through. Then I used ACE hardware’s Metallic Silver Finish.
ace metalic finishThis is an oil based product so you’ll want to use it in a well ventilated area and use a paint brush you don’t mind throwing away after. I didn’t cover all of the surface with the silver. I left some of the gray popping through.  Make sure you only put a little bit of finish on your paint brush and almost dry brush it on. 08062015-12-mark_20379802905_o

After I painted it with the metallic finish, it was a little too bright of a silver for me. So I used Valspar’s Antiquing glazing and whipped it all over the piece to tone it down a bit.  This is the photo I really wanted to show you the difference of… if only I didn’t treat my iphone like a pregnancy test. lol

Here’s what the Valspar glaze looks like. Are you ready for the after pictures?

This china cabinet was a custom order. Andrea has gold and silver in her house, in such a tasteful way I might add! So, we used gold hardware on the cabinet and I adore the combination. I absolutely love this new finish! Thank you for letting me try out a new technique on your furniture, Andrea! You were a delight to work with.

Here’s a quick before and after for Pinterest if you’d like to pin it. ;)

How to add mirrors to your buffet – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

The weather has been amazing hasn’t it? We’ve been soaking up the sun while creating so many new furniture pieces for the store. We are ALMOST restocked and I’m more excited than ever about the design of the new furniture in our store.  The more you’ve all been in, you’ve also seen that we have quickly changing home decor items that can help make your house feel like home. I saw this quote on Instagram posted by @ksds1 and it explains how I feel about what we do. I want what you buy from us to have a story or I want to make a story worth telling. We are just a local family, giving it our all to repurpose old things. We want it to have good bones, but also have one of a kind designs that you won’t see everywhere. Our very favorite stories are your stories… like when we restore something from your family and make you look at it anew and love it every time you walk by it. Not because “things” can make you happy, but because it’s all part of your story; a story worth telling, loving and sharing with those around you.

things you love

I also can’t wait to share with you this before and after. Hayley’s family didn’t want to just sell this piece of furniture on craigslist or donate it somewhere that would resell it as is. They wanted to donate it to us, so we could work hard on a design and create something another family would love for years to come. Thank you for that, Hayley! I hope we did you proud.

Here it is after we started prepping it for paint.
new 234

This piece had a great design to add mirrors to the front. My living room entertainment center also has mirrors that we added to the front and  I LOVE it. It makes the room feel more open and airy. So, here’s how to add mirrors to the front of a buffet.

Try to pick a buffet that has a frame built into each door. It will give you a perfect “border” to add the mirror. Then call your local glass shop and order a 1/8 inch mirror to the size of the framed in section. Loctite makes a glue specifically for mirrors. It looks like this:
Loctite

You’ll want to attach the mirror on to the wood using that glue. I’ve heard that the back of mirrors can corrode away from some of the other glues that aren’t made for mirrors. Before we attach the mirror, we painted the whole buffet using Valspar’s Vintage Teal color. It’s my favorite go to color for a dark teal. Please check the swatch itself at Lowes to see what color it is as monitors can make the color look really different than it actually is. Then we use Valspar’s Antiquing glaze to deepen the teal even more. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. Ready for the afters?

Rustic Chic Dresser Set For Sale – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How’s the last week been? It’s been another busy but good one here. Troy Night Out was a blast! My kids and I spent the day making a lemonade stand. We took this old small cabinet and redid it. They were so cute! They had an opinion about everything from the color to the font for the word “Lemonade” on the sign. That night, they joined us at Troy Night Out; I swear they were more popular than we were! ;)

lemonade stand

My favorite part was the memories we made while repurposing, painting and meeting new people in the city of Troy. We had a great time!! The kids were also thrilled to the gills to sell their lemonade to the mayor. Ever since our ribbon cutting, they talk about how they got to meet the mayor and “he’s like the president”. After he left, Josh said, “Mom, maybe we should give him the lemonade since he’s the mayor.” He’s a smart kid. ;) Josh also kept asking people IF they wanted change instead of just giving them their change. When I told him not to ask, just tell people how much their change is, he told me that he makes more money the other way. Cracks. Me. Up. Here they are with the mayor:
lemonade

I’m BEYOND excited to share this furniture transformation with you. If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram, you may have already seen the after pictures because this set is up for sale on our Furniture for Sale page. It’s hard to appreciate the work behind them without seeing the before pictures.

My mom bought this set for me at a yard sale. When she sent me the picture, I wanted them so badly. One had missing trim and one had a chewed up corner, but they had just the bones I needed to make this transformation amazing!

Here they are before:
fc-07212015-46-mark_19280965164_o fc-07212015-47-mark_19908661461_oI’ve been wanting to add aged lumber to the fronts of a dresser for a while. I’ve never seen it done, but in my little brain it sounded amazing. These were perfect because we could remove the framing on each drawer and that would give us the depth we would need to add wood to the front. That’s just what we did on all of the bottom drawers. We ripped off the trim which was a bit of a chore.

Once we did that, we used aged wood so it had a naturally gray finish. I didn’t stain or do anything to the color of the drawers. Just stained the side where the cuts were to make it match the original gray color of the wood. If you end up trying a project like this, you have to be very careful to keep the wood exactly the right size so it sits perfectly on the drawer.

Adding Modern to a Mid Century Dresser Set – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!!

How are you?? We have been INSANELY busy and if I haven’t said it in a while; thank you ALL so much for this job. You make it possible and we love it. Last week more than half of our store sold which is great!! I will have tons of new furniture in the store by this weekend so be sure to come see everything. The best part? They are some of my all time favorite designs. Just you wait!! ;)

Last week, I thought I’d take the kids on a bike ride with just me for the first time. Harmony can now ride two wheels so I thought it was time. Well… when I left the house and started going, I thought the road was straight and flat… I was wrong. It had a slight steady decline. Harmony has NOT mastered the art of breaking so she kept getting faster and faster. I tried to tell her how to slow down but it didn’t work. She took quite the crash and screamed like she was quickly approaching the pearly gates. While  I’m picking up the little bloodied girl, my son decides this is a good time to head home without me. Crossing streets alone, where I can’t see him. Yeah. Just wonderful. So I had to make Harmony get back on the bike and ride it home. There was no way to carry her and push two bikes. I even left my cell phone home to be an “unplugged” mom. That’ll teach me. So off she went dripping blood and screaming her way, peddling home while I’m sure neighbors looked on with judgmental thoughts. lol So… some moments are just that way. We try to be good moms and make memories… instead we almost lose a kids, make the other bike with blood dripping down her and leave any way of getting help at home. I just have to look back and laugh at it now, but at the time it was QUITE the day. ;)

On a happier note, I LOVE going to the Cohoes waterfalls. If you live nearby, you should really check them out. We went on Saturday night and packed a picnic with our friends, the Fischers. It was SO MUCH fun! Also, grab some ice cream at LePage’s Market just up the road and go upstairs to their balcony. You can see the falls from the balcony and it’s gorgeous.
tt 22tt 21

Ok, ok. On to the furniture. You all know I am a sucker for stained drawers and paint on a mid century dresser, right? It’s a way to bring some modern to an old, ugly piece of furniture. John stopped by Salvation Army and saw this dresser. He sent me a picture of it. I wanted it so  badly!! Right away I snatched that up (the drawers weren’t in it yet, but I didn’t get a picture of it with the drawers in it).

IMG_0488

We also bought these end stands on craigslist that I thought would be a great match with this credenza.

17837977403_9fee09dc95_k

We painted the box with Benjamin Moore’s Simply White. We kept the color of the doors and just freshened them up with stain. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.
We sanded the drawer fronts down and stained them with watered down paint and stain. I don’t have just one color to tell you how, but I would say pick a stain color you like to be safe on the drawers. Here are the after’s: You may want to sit down before you look at them. ;)

Gray Ornate Buffet – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How was your week? We were unbelievably busy and I’m so grateful for it! Not complaining at all! If I didn’t get back to one of your emails or texts in the last week, please remind me. I went through my emails and think I replied to everyone, but just in case. ;)

It’s been such a hot week, but furniture painters love warm weather. The paint dries quickly with no drips, we can produce more and we can enjoy it because we aren’t freezing cold. You southern furniture painters out there… do you know how good you’ve got it?

This weeks makeover is of an old beautiful buffet from about the 20-30’s. It was only for sale at our store for a little over a week before it sold. You’ll see why I hope!

Here it is before:

We painted it with Sherman Williams color Cracked Pepper. We also lightly distressed it and glazed it using Valspar’s Antiquing glaze. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.

Are you ready for the after?
