How was your week? Ours was good! The normal pace of post Christmas work is great! We were able to work on our family room this weekend. I can’t wait to show you the pictures soon!
Every new year reminds me of new life, new beginnings, and bright tomorrows. So it’s no surprise that I started the year with bright new colors and beautiful new pieces. This week’s Tuesday’s Treasures is a piece that was gorgeous from the start but we added a fun new look. Here it is before:
We added a fresh coat of paint and new hardware. We painted it Divine Red by Benjamin Moore, glazed it to deepen the color, and added a protective clear coat. It also has dovetail drawers!

Did you have a fun New Year’s weekend?? Happy 2017 to all of you! I’ll write more soon, but I wanted to say thank you so much to all of you who made 2016 a success for us. You trusted me with designing your home, redesigning your furniture, redoing your kitchen, and shopping in our store for furniture and decorations. We couldn’t do this without you and we are humbled by the love and loyalty you have for FunCycled.
Once we reached Christmas day, I felt like I had run across the finish line of a marathon. It was such a busy, busy November and December (thankfully)! Last week I tried to work less hours and make memories with our kiddos. Building lego sets, coloring and painting. Things I have not had a moment to do and I was so grateful for those moments.
We went on a day trip to NYC with our friends! Got to check out the Christmas tree in Rockefeller Plaza.
We hosted a New Years Eve party at our house for the 2nd year in a row. I dare say it was the most exciting dry party in all of Rensselaer County!! ;)
Last but most certainly not least, I went to visit my friend Carrie in Connecticut. We lost touch after she got married and just recently reconnected after 16 years!! It seemed so weird that it has been that long but at the same time I felt like the time and distance had never happened. Her beauty inside and out is just as it used to be… and I am so blessed by her friendship.
While I was there, I designed a quick gallery wall in her adorable home.
You’re here for a furniture makeover though, right? Ok, ok!!
This is a huge makeover!! You can barely recognize the pieces! I don’t have an amazing before picture, but here it is:
The first thing I felt like it needed was height. I didn’t like that they sat flat on the ground so I ordered mid century maple legs for both dresser.
Then I found vintage hardware that I wanted to use!
I also really wanted a stripe on this set.
We painted it with Benjamin Moore’s color Old Navy. For the stripes, I wanted the wood to be darker so we sanded and stained the section for the wood stripe darker. Then I also wanted to have white to make the wood pop so we did the white stripes next. Final steps were adding new hardware and spraying it with a protective clear coat. How was your Christmas? We wanted to say a special thank you to all of you who shopped and custom ordered furniture from us in this holiday season. We couldn’t do this every day without your support and all of the encouragement you give us. It means so much to our family. We had a very busy December and are looking forward to a few weeks to wind down and have lighter work load over the next week.
For this week’s transformation, I wanted to show you how we took a very traditional buffet and gave it a one of a kind look. Here it is before:
We painted it with Benjamin Moore’s color Silver Fox, heavily distressed using an orbital sander, added new hardware, and sprayed it with a protective clear coat. If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.

How was your week? We are in the middle of the hustle and bustle around here. Trying to get everyone’s furniture ready for them by Christmas. Busy is good, we are so very thankful for the business!
I took this weekend off completely to spend some much needed family time. It had been 13 days since my last day off and I felt like the holidays were flying by faster than I can enjoy them. So we hit pause and enjoyed our kiddos this weekend. It was perfect!
I can’t wait to share this weeks furniture makeover! I don’t often come across such a large set in excellent condition so I bought it on the spot. It has two end stands, two dresses,, a headboard, and a large mirror. Here it all is before:
We painted it with Benjamin Moore’s color Urban Bronze, glazed it and then sprayed it with a protective clear coat. If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.

We were blessed with another busy work weekend with the Victorian Stroll happening in downtown Troy. The streets were filled and our store followed suite. So much fun! Thanks again to all of you who came to shop and support all of the local businesses in our community.
People often ask me if when I see a piece whether I know right away how I would like to redo it? Often, I don’t but in this case I knew exactly what I wanted to do with this buffet. It was low and solid which is hard to find so I knew it could make an awesome entertainment center. I wanted to take those doors off and add barn wood and I really wanted to keep it looking modern with a bright white color.
So that’s just what we did! Take a look at the before!
We painted the outside with Benjamin Moore’s color Simply White and added the barn doors with multiple hinges so they fold in half and don’t take up as much spaced on either side. If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.

How’s your week going? When I pulled into my driveway after spending the day at FunCycled for shop local Saturday, my kids ran to the car and hugged me. They first told me how glad they were that I was home and then asked if anything they made for the store had sold. I told them yes and they cheered, jumped up and down and told me how they were going to use the money to buy gifts for others this Christmas. Then over dinner, my son Josh prayed before the meal and without prompting said “thank you God for giving us sales at the store today so we can keep having a store”. It’s every day moments like these, which most people never know about, that makes me want to share how much it means that you all took time to shop local today. Even my kids know how very important a day like today is for our family. We are thanking God for a you and thanking you for shopping local and caring about supporting family businesses. From the bottom of our hearts, we are so very grateful each and every day.
This week I wanted to share a dresser makeover that we did for our window display which is also for sale! Our window display theme for the Troy Window Display Competition is Troy’s Bicentennial. I’ll share how to vote for our window display on our facebook page this Wednesday. Here’s how it looks!
This is the dresser before:
We painted it with Benjamin Moore’s color Simply White and distressed it. A friend of ours who used to work with us found the old Troy page out of an insurance book and emailed it to me. I uploaded it to Staples and had it printed as engineer print. Then I used modge podge to attach it to the dresser and put a protective clear coat over the whole thing. How was last week? This is my busy season with furniture, interior design and running a retail store. That being said, I don’t remember much about last week and I’m pretty sure I don’t have any cute pictures or funny stories to share. That’s the bad news… the good news is, I do have cute furniture to share with you. Just go with it for me. ;) I know furniture pales in comparison to my kiddos cuteness! Lol!
When John came home with this bed, I couldn’t wait to have it be turned into a bench.
I loved the shape of the top and how royal it would feel. John assembled it one day when I wasn’t home and I didn’t plan on the front being designed the way that he did it (without front legs), but he showed me how sturdy it was and I actually loved it in the end!
We painted it with Benjamin Moore’s color Simply White and lightly distressed it. If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.
For the seat, we stained the lumber with a weathered oak stain. So beautiful, right?? This bench will be available to purchase and you can check out other new furniture for sale on our website here! Thanks so much for stopping by the blog today. John and I had a wonderful time enjoying Historic Williamsburg, VA thanks to the generosity of our friends Jim and Christine. We had never been there and loved seeing all of the historic homes, talking to carpenters, and sipping real hot chocolate. It was wonderful! Here are a few pictures from the trip.
This week’s makeover is a quick one but with a big result. Here it is before:
We painted it with Benjamin Moore’s color Dark Teal, glazed it with Valspar’s Antiquing Glaze, and finished it with a satin clear coat. If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.

How was your weekend? I hope it was restful and fun! I can’t wait to share today’s story with you because stories like this don’t happen every day in my profession.
Michael emailed me asking to set up a time to go over some furniture he’d like to order. We met and he explained how he would love to surprise his wife, Amy, with a bedroom set for Christmas. They had miss matched furniture and he wanted something really special – picked by him and designed by me. Amy has ordered furniture from us in the past so I knew her and what she might like. He told me about items he had noticed her liking in the past and asked if I could make a set which would reflect the style she likes and make it all blend while not all exactly matching.
We picked out a dresser I had in stock. This one in fact.
They owned another dresser he said that he’d love to have repurposed:
He also needed end stands and we thought these could work with the design.
They have a king sized bed with no headboard so he asked if we could build one. We went back and forth on ideas, he wanted the texture of raw wood but a light color because the headboard wall is a dark brown.
So we started with the tall oak dresser and added an ombre distressed finish. Look closely, we start with white and go down do a chalky black on the drawers, then heavily distressed everything. The outside of the dresser is painted with Benjamin Moore’s color Simply White. If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. Ready for the after?
He also wanted a place to store electronics so we made the top drawer hinge down in order to use the cable box or DVD player. We then took the dresser that they already owned and removed the trim on the fronts so we could add barn board to the drawer fronts.
Then we kept the end stands simple with painting them Simply White as well and heavily distressing them.
Last but definitely not least, we custom built a king sized headboard and installed lights as well!
One of my favorite parts of this story is that Michael asked me if he should completely surprise Amy or ask her if she’d like to provide input. I thought allowing her to offer input might be nice so he told Amy. Her reply was the best… I trust you, surprise me. This level of love and trust is a rare treat in my line of work and everything about it made my heart happy.
So let me end by saying – thank you Michael for being so in love with your wife, for working hard to think of something special to give her, for trying to surprise her, and for giving me complete creative freedom. Amy, thank you for being the kind of wife that is trusting and kind. You did what most wouldn’t by trusting and I hope it paid off!!
