Marcie’s Black Hutch – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends! Has your month of October flown by as fast as mine?? Man oh man!! I blink and look at the corner of my computer screen to see that it’s the 22nd! Where did the month go?? It’s been so full of fun that I can hardly stand it. I’ve been feeling so blessed by family, friends and work! No complaints here. Nope. None.

This week’s piece is for my friend Marcie. This lady.

Yup, we wear the same glasses. And yes, we’re both wearing grey. Marcie and I have been friends for about 5 years. We met when our boys were both six months old and now are best pals. At the end of this month, Marcie will be moving far, far away to the sunny, delightful land of Florida. I’m still trying to imagine her moving away and not thinking too much about not having one of the closest people in my life close by anymore. See… just typing that sentence made me cry. Thinking too much about it can be a bad thing. So, I thought I would share what I made for her instead. ANNND I want to share some of the things she’s given to me over the last five years.

Marcie has taught me what it means to be a good friend. She’s selfless… so so selfless. She may have a bad day, but would never tell me first if I was having a bad day. She would hear me out, encourage me and if time allowed tell me about hers. Sometimes I was so selfish I wouldn’t even know about her struggles for days. That’s the kind of selfless friend she is.

Marcie is an AMAZING mom. So much of what I do day to day with my kids comes from what I’ve learned by watching Marcie. Room time, schedules, bed time, discipline, tone of voice, and cheerful spirit… those are the things that I learned by watching. Watching Marcie. I literally think about her all through the day when I am annoyed at my kids and every once a while get it right and have the right attitude like she would.

Marcie’s strong. Sometimes too strong… ;) She makes no excuses about why she can’t do something. She may have 4 kids and a hubby out of town for work, but she’s still going to be at Wednesday church. With school the next day and teaching school all day, she doesn’t care. Her priority is serving. serving God and her family. I want to be more like that.

I really could go on and on, but I have someone coming to my house in 30 minutes and need to stop crying. Just the reality of life…

So, here’s the hutch before:

And after painted with Benjamin Moore’s black paint and new hardware from Lowe’s. It looks completely different, right??

Oh, and Marcie is also the kind of friend that refused to let me just give this to her. I wanted to so bad, but she still wouldn’t budge. That’s a true friend, isn’t it? I’m going to miss you like mad Marcie. So thankful that God has blessed me with your friendship. You’re a life long friend for sure!

Happy redesigns everyone,

Sarah

For Sale! Sea-foam Blue and White Hutch

Good morning friends! I know it’s not a Tuesday’s Treasures, but I wanted to take time to share this makeover for you. We just finished up a new piece and added it to our Furniture For Sale Page. Here it is before:

We painted it using Benjamin Moore’s Catalina Blue on the outside and white on the inside. Then slightly distressed it and painted all the original hardware white. The bottom center section is open with no shelving or drawers so it would be a great storage section for bottles or larger pieces. The right and left sides have one shelf in each.

Here’s the after picture!!

The best part is it’s for sale!! Check out our Furniture For Sale page to see if it’s still available.

Happy redesigns everyone,

Sarah

30 Random Acts of Kindness for My 30th Birthday

Last week, I turned the big 3-0 and I can’t believe it!!! Last year, I read a blog (I can’t remember which one) about doing random acts of kindness on your birthday. Ever since that day, I knew that I wanted to try it for my 30th birthday. I looked online and found Ann Voskamp’s 40 Acts of Kindness very helpful with ideas and tags for some of the gifts. Thanks for the help!

I went back and forth about whether or not I should even do a post about this because I didn’t want it to sound like I was bragging. Let me be very clear… I did this not because I’m an amazing person, but because God has blessed me in amazing ways and I wanted to pass that on to others. We’re not rich people, but we have all that we need and so much more. So, instead of sulking about getting old (insert comments about how I’m not old yet here), I wanted to spend the day giving back because of all God has given me. The other reason I’m sharing this is because someone’s blog inspired me to do it and I wanted to be an inspiration to encourage you to try something like this or just try one a week to be a blessing. I guarantee the reward is much higher than the cost.

Ok, you ready??

1. Take mom to breakfast
When mom heard that I would be doing this, her first comment was that I should take her out to breakfast as my first random act of kindness. lol Oh mom! Well, we are at a new little cafe in downtown Troy. We had such a nice time and I’m so thankful for mom. I really couldn’t have started FunCycled without her… She’s thoughtful, giving, outgoing and loves her family more than anything. Love you mom!!

2. Candy in the mailbox for the mail carrier

I love our mail lady, she even leaves us Christmas cards!! I didn’t get to see her face when she opened the mailbox, but she left a sweet note for me the next day.

3. Bring my friend Kassy dinner – she just had a baby

Pulled pork, chips and a salad. Super easy!

4. Leave a basket ball at the basket ball court in the projects

This was fun… before we even left the street someone ran out and grabbed it. Loved that!

5. Leave a family movie pack at a Redbox

Pepsi, Popcorn and $2 for the movie. Who could pass that up??

6. Bring cookies to the Fire Department

7. Give flowers to a stranger on the street

This is my all time favorite one. I took a picture of the elderly woman on the street that I gave a bouquet of fall flowers, but she didn’t want it to be put online. So you’ll just have to use your imagination with me now. She was pushing a cart and seemed poor, but when I stopped her and gave her the flowers I felt like there was a spark in her eyes that she would have had when she was in her 20’s and someone gave her her first bouquet of flowers. She smiled ear to ear and asked God to bless me for my kindness. To which I replied, “He already blessed me and that’s how I can bless you.”  Amazingly special moment for sure.

8. Clean up garbage at the park

This was slightly less exciting. For some reason the park seemed super clean that day. I was hoping for a couple garbage bags full but eneded up with MAYBE a couple hands full of trash. Oh well, we tried. :) Hence no picture… very anticlimactic.

9.  Bring brownies to the police department

This officer was great! He seemed so excited to get them!! AND he was happy to have me take a quick picture of him. Fun times!

10. Leave detergent on the washing machines at the local laundromat.

I liked that no one was at the laundry mat when I dropped this off. I’m just trusting that God put it in the hands of the right person at the right time to be a blessing.

11. Bring cookies to the nurses at ER

This one was a little crazy, our local hospital has about 1,000 different turns to get to the ER and it took forever. Then when I got there I wasn’t even able to see the nurses—busy day at the ER. We left them anyway, hoping they liked them.

12. Deliver crayons and coloring books to the kid’s floor at the hospital

We went back through the halls and went up to where the families hang out when visiting babies in the NICU and left these for them to find.

13. Drop off a clothes donation at the city mission

14. Do one nice thing for spouse or best friend

Well, this isn’t a good picture but I did get to take three of my very favorite people out to lunch and give the ladies flowers and a note about all the things I love about them. Jo Ann, Sarah and John you  make every day better. Hands down, you brighten up my life. Thank you for all of your help to make this day happen!! We went to the Flying Chicken in Troy. Have you been there?? Yummmmmyyyy goooodness!! Oh my word I can’t get enough of that place. Just sayin… !

15. Quarters under the swings at the park, surprising little kids

We spread them out everywhere in the park. Hope no kids choked on them, but I couldn’t afford to do any bills. :)

16. Surprise someone in need with a gas card

Check… I’ll leave them unamed. :)

17. Stop by work to give dad a hug and hand written note

Wish I had gotten a picture with dad!! I don’t know what I was thinking. Love my dad so much!! Writing a note to him about how much he means to me is easy. Super easy.

18. Leave dollars with the Dollar Store clerk to pay for the next 5 kids’ purchases

I LOVED this one and the look on the clerk’s face when I told her what I was doing. She may have been even more excited than I was.

19. Bring flowers and a card to someone who you looked up to growing up

Lara was definitely that someone to me. She’s 10 years older than I am and I’ve known her and her family since I was 3.  All of the while I was growing up she was the sweet, spiritual, beautiful girl I wanted to be just like. If any teenagers read my blog, keep in  mind that there are little eyes watching you and wanting to be like you. So be the kind of person worth emulating. Love God, be respectful, don’t care about being rich, care about others, love being part of a family. Lara was and is all that and so much more. So thankful for you friend!

20. Bring a teacher flowers at school

Mrs. Jackson was like a 2nd mom to me growing up. When my parents went away, we all stayed with her family. She had all boys and she would always do her best to make the room I was staying in look girly. Even when that meant putting a hat and scarf on the deer head on the wall… not even kidding!! :) Love you so much Mrs. Jackson.

21. Pay for someone behind me at the local Starbucks

This was funny, we had to wait like 5 minutes before someone was actually behind us. lol

22. Leave a surprise gift of your choice at your Pastor’s wife’s door

23. Put quarters in Aldi carts

It was poouurrrring out when I had to this one. Fun times. lol

24. Notes/tracts/verses with candy left on windshields of cars at grocery or handout on street

Got these on the cars before the rain.

25. Leave a favorite book with a note on a bench

What would be one of my favorite books?? The Five Love Languages

If you haven’t read it, I highly highly suggest it.

26. Put coins in the bubblegum machines at the store

This looks much sweeter than it was… the kids cried and whined that they couldn’t get the candy and toys. Just keeping it real! ;) Still a good life lesson and I’d do it again in a heart beat.

27. Box of chocolates left at the medical clinic for our kids doctor

The kids’ doctor was with a patient so we had to leave it at her desk. The kids loved picking out what to get her and seeing her office though.

28. Bring dog treats to the humane society and donuts for the workers

This one made me nearly cry. She loved it and cried!! Such a sweet moment.

29. Go to the nursing home with flowers

If I could choose two of my favorite moments, this would be the 2nd on my list. Look at the smile on my great aunt’s face. I don’t think anything could explain this moment better.

30. Write a hand written letter and mail it to a friend far away.

Sent it to my maid of honor, long time BFF Theresa. Telling her how much she means to me.

*Updated info! A GINORMOUS thank you to the Rachel Ray show for contacting me to be on their local hero giveaway show. It’s not at all why we shared this, but it blessed our socks off. If you want to read more about that experience, check out our post about being on the Rachel Ray show.
The Rachael Ray Show and a Navy Secretary Desk – Tuesday’s Treasures

One of my favorite things about this day was that so many friends and customers sent me a note or called to say that they did a random act of kindness in honor of my birthday. That means SO much to me!!! If anyone has other random acts of kindness that they would like to share, I’d love to hear them. I definitely will be doing something like this again and would love more ways to show kindness.  So please leave a comment in the section below telling us your idea!

Philippians 2:3-4 KJV, “Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than themselves.  Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.”

Blessings,
Sarah

File Cabinet Turned Mud Room Bench – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi All!!!

I’m beyond excited to share this before and after with you. Ever since I first laid eyes on this file cabinet, I wanted to turn it into a hall tree bench. One of our customers, Laurie, stopped by to buy a different piece and asked me what plans I had for the file cabinet. Once I told her, she said that she needed something exactly like that!! YAY! I was sooo excited to have an excuse to get started.

Here it was before!!

We flipped it on it’s side and boxed in the drawers and side first. The hardest part with this project was finding doors that would be the right width for the back. One was too skinny, two were too wide. So we had  to try to find three matching old solid wood doors. That’s no easy task. usually you can find two matching, but three… not so much. Well, the third and middle door doesn’t exactly match but we trimmed it up so you wouldn’t even be able to tell.

Up next, we painted everything using Benjamin Moore’s Simply Irresistible 205. Then I slightly distressed it and sealed it with a protective clear coat. We added a wood shelf and the corner brackets.

I CAN NOT WAIT to show you the after pictures. I want one of these myself!! If you’d like one, we can custom build something similar for you. Just use our Contact Us form to let us know what size you’re looking for and I’ll get you a quote.

Happy redesigns everyone,
Sarah

Grey and Hot Pink Secretary Desk – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi All!

It’s been such a fun week here!! Yesterday was my 30th birthday and if you follow our facebook page you’ve seen some of the random acts of kindness that we did throughout the day. I’ll be doing a blog post soon about all of them in case you’d like to try it for yourself. It was an amazing experience!! My favorite random act of kindness was giving a stranger on the street a bouquet of flowers. Such an incredible experience!!

On to the furniture!! Amy reached out to me about redoing this secretary desk for her daughters room. John was a little hesitant to paint this one because of the beautiful oak, but I could see it coming together with colors.

I painted the outside using Benjamin Moore’s Cheating Heart that I turned into chalk paint, distressed and sealed it. We actually sprayed into the inside using Benjamin Moore’s Crushed Berries. We bought the hardware from Hobby Lobby and I spray painted all of it with Valspar’s Pink Burst. So so adorable, right??

Thank you so much for the custom order Amy!

Happy redesigns everyone,
Sarah

From An Old Oak Dresser to a Modern Eye Catcher – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi All! It’s been a wonderful, wonderful week here!!! My very dear friend Marcie planned a surprise 30th birthday party for me this past weekend. Don’t worry I’m still in my 20’s until next week, she had to do it early to surprise me! ;) Thank you so much, Marcie!!!

Marcie knows me better than most so she gets that the best birthday present I could ever have is not something you could buy, it’s quality time with the people I love. So, here we are… 15 of some of my very favorite people. Thanks so much for coming to make it such a special night everyone!

On Sunday, I had a little accident and cut my thumb to the bone while trying to remove a crystal knob.  It broke in my  hand -Ouch!! So, no lifting or painting much this week. I thought I would seize the moment and go on a day trip to Hudson, NY. My friend Jamie and I were supposed to be antique shopping, but she had to cancel due to the sudden illness of a couple of her close friends. I was thinking of canceling but my friend Sarah wanted to go enjoy the day with me, which worked out well since I am out of commission in the furniture department. She made the day amazing… a kindred spirit for sure.

If you haven’t been to Hudson, you must go! It was such a fun day of antique shopping, enjoying the architecture of the buildings, tasting AMAZING lavender ice cream, and walking along the river.  Here are some highlights in photos. :)

A waffle cone in honor of you Sarah Sprague! :)

OK, you’re here for the furniture, right?? I have to keep reminding myself of that. lol ! Here’s a dresser that we bought from Chris, who’s my friend Jo Ann’s friend. This was her late husband’s dresser and it traveled all around the country and as far as the Bahama’s. It was in great shape and Marian saw it on our Upcoming Projects page and asked us to customize it. I love how she saw an old piece with the right lines and knew we could make it modern. She picked out quite a few hardware pieces that she liked and then let me choose from there. She had a great eye so it was an easy choice. Here it was before.

We sanded and painted with chalk paint made from Benjamin Moore’s Van Courtland Blue HC-145. Then we very lightly glazed it and added new the new hardware. Always remember that if you paint anything with chalk paint, you have to seal it after. Whether it is with wax or a water based poly, seal it because it’s porous.

Here it is after!

I really couldn’t love this one more. I hope we did you proud Chris! Marian!!

And thanks to you, our readers, for your support and encouragement this week. The care and concern about my hand was overwhelming to me. You humble me with your kindness every time there is a struggle here at FunCycled.

Happy redesigns everyone,
Sarah

Yellow Painted Dresser – Tuesday’s Treasures

Happy Tuesday everyone!! We’re all about change here at FunCycled… making the old new again with repair, color or classic styles. Sometimes I look at a piece and think that’s not too bad looking. Should I change it?? But then I make some adjustments whether that be color or hardware and wonder why I ever even thought about not changing it. It seems so much better. Sometimes I get that way in life, too. Since we are now official full time entrepreneurs, most people think I must love change. Nope, not true at all! John loves change. I eat the same things at the same restaurants, I have no desire to rearrange furniture,  I like little risk. That’s why we’re a great team.

That being said, this month has been a bit of a change for us. Our babies both started school full time Monday-Friday 8-3. That may not seem like much, but when I’ve had them with me every day for the last 5 years, it takes some getting use to. This month I also found out that my two very very dear friends, Marcie and Sarah were planning to move out of state. Sarah’s already gone and Marcie will be in about a month. It’s definitely sad to see them go. That being said, I’m reminded that God so often has to force changes in our lives for great reasons. School has been wonderful for the kids. They’re already writing much better, memorizing Bible verses and singing all about God’s grace. Sweetie wrote her own song this week and it went something like this, “Lord, please help me not say bad words or hit anyone. And make me happy! Teach me your ways”. lol! Apparently she has inner struggles with wanting to say bad words. I confidently believe that God is moving Marcie and her family to Florida and Sarah and her family to Michigan for wonderful reasons. I guess I say all this to remind you all that if you’re anything like me and if change isn’t easy, God wants to move and transform us into something beautiful. His kind of beauty… “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” Galations 5:22-23a ESV

When you see our furniture transformations, I hope that you’re reminded that God makes beauty from ashes. This week’s piece wasn’t necessarily ashes, but definitely needed some beauty. Here she was before! My mom bought this one for me and even fit it in her Subaru! Love you mom. ;)

I loved the little tiny top drawers and the knobs. Brenda (who’s already bought pieces from us) saw this on our Upcoming Projects page and asked to have it custom painted. We repaired the veneer damage here and there and painted it all using chalk paint that I  made from Benjamin Moore’s Province Creme which is a buttery yellow. Then I distressed it a bit and sealed with a clear water based poly.

Could there be a cuter little dresser? I’m not sure! Love, love this one!!

Have a great week and we’ll see you in October!! I can’t believe September is almost over… wowzer! :)

Happy redesigns everyone,
Sarah

Art Deco Retro Dresser Set – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi All!

How’s it going?? We had a great weekend here full of happy and bitter sweet moments. Our little sweetie turned 4 this week!! How did she get this big??

And, John and I went on a double date with our friends Sarah and Aaron. For all you married couples out there with kids, I highly recommend going on a double date.  We laughed all night !! I felt like we were still in the dating days hanging out with friends. So! Much! Fun!!

Enough with all that, you’re here for the furniture aren’t you? Courtney reached out to us, wanting a dresser set for her bedroom.  We didn’t have a full set that matched, but Courtney had seen two pieces on our Upcoming Projects page and asked if we could make them a set.

She wanted an Art Deco 1950’s color but also wanted the set to have a vintage feel. So here they are before…

We liked the original hardware on the dresser with the drop down front, but decided to switch the hardware on the other piece. We painted both using Benjamin Moore’s Cool Aqua. Then we distressed and glazed both pieces to give a vintage feel. Are you ready for the afters??

The knobs are from Anthropologie… love love them!

Oh and a quick update on the kids. They still love everything about school! They are having a blast and actually cried the other day because they didn’t want me to pick them up. Well… that didn’t sting at all!! Ouch!!  At least I know they are happy. :)
Have a great week!!Happy redesigns everyone,
Sarah

Bistro Set and Bird & Tree Coffee Table – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi All!

How was the first week of school for most of you in upstate NY??? It was our first year for both our Little Man who started kindergarten and for Sweetie going into Pre-K. If you want to see some pictures of their first day and have a chance to get a coupon for $50 your own photo shoot check out the Kid’s First Day of School post.

Here are some fun before and afters of pieces that have been done for awhile, but somehow I missed writing a blog post about them. I don’t know how because I really, really like both of them.

This little bistro set was on my front porch for years until I recently Revamped My Front Porch and added a new burlap bistro set. I don’t know why I didn’t redo it sooner because if I had, I probably wouldn’t have wanted to replace it.

Brenda was looking for a bistro set and is a self proclaimed FunCycled addict. When she saw this on our Upcoming Projects page, she jumped on it.

Painting outdoor furniture is similar to indoor except you want to use an exterior paint and an exterior sealer and do a couple extra coats of sealer on top to make sure it can handle the sun and rain. The whole set was painted Benjamin Moore’s Meridian Blue. Then I lightly distressed it and sealed it.

It just couldn’t be any cuter now, could it??

Second up but definitely loved to pieces is an amazing bird and tree coffee table. Colleen contacted us to redo her coffee table to incorporate sage brown and cream. When she came to drop it off, she found out that her parents live on my street. Small world!!!

Here is was before. Colleen liked the stain of the wood, but wanted the top to have a tree design.

We sanded and re-stained the entire base with Minwax ebony. Then we painted the top Benjamin Moore’s Carlisle Cream and distressed it. We’re always asked if we use stencils for our designs. No, I almost always hand draw the tree and paint it by hand. That’s what we did in this case. Here’s the after!

Thanks so much for the custom orders Brenda and Colleen!!! It was such a pleasure working with you both.

Happy redesigns everyone,
Sarah

The Kiddo’s First Day of School

It doesn’t even seem possible that our little kiddos are old enough to be in school. Hearing people tell me not to wish the baby days away seems to hit home on a week like last week. Half of their days are going to be with someone else now. John and I are so thankful that God has provided which has allowed us to put the kids in a private Christian school this year. It’s not right for everyone but it has been our hearts desire since day one and we feel humbled that God has blessed us in a way we never thought would be possible.

They both love school so far!! The first day we had just a little bit of tears (all of us) but like our little 5 year old man said, “I’m nervous, but God made me brave”. They are little troopers- loving being around people and getting to learn and play every day. On the first day of school, my friend Chelsea from Chelsea Boss Photography came over and took some OUT OF THIS WORLD first day of school photos for us! The kids had a blast, and if you’ve ever taken your kids to a photo session you’ll know how much that means! We barely had to ask them to smile!

I had to share some of the photo’s with you!  Love them, right?? Well, I also have some great news!! Chelsea also hooked us up with ten $50 off coupons for her 1-2 hour sessions!!! If you’d like one, just email me at sarah@funcycled.com. There is a limited amount so it will be on a first come first serve basis. Also, do me a favor and like Chelsea’s facebook page. That way you’ll see other specials she may be having.

I have to share a couple more with you because they are just too stinkin’ cute!!!

It’s not too late to get your school photo’s done with Chelsea!! You can even use this desk if you’d like! :) I’ll let you borrow it. ;)

Thanks to all who prayed for their first day of school! Your prayers were answered!

Have a blessed week!!
Sarah
