A Vintage Dining Table Flip with a Personal Story

Some furniture flips are just about aesthetics and style, but this antique oak dining table flip carried a deeper meaning for me. This wasn’t just any table—it once belonged to a close family friend, someone I used to visit often as I was growing up, and even in my adult years. I can still carry fond memories of sitting at that table, sharing stories and snacks, and feeling a sense of home and comfort. So when the opportunity came to bring this table back to life, I knew it would be something special.

More Than a Makeover – A Tribute

This dining table flip wasn’t just about furniture. It was a chance to honor the people and memories that shaped my childhood. Mr. Jackson was a big part of my upbringing, and our families share special life moments together. I even came across this photo from my wedding day – you can see my hand on his shoulder. Mr. Jackson was a special man, and I am honored that we got to create a new fresh start for this set – in honor of him! He was strong, but so gentle. He had a servants hard and that made him a great leader. I would often stay at the Jackson’s house if my parents were out of town so there were countless game nights, dinners around this table, and in the morning I would walk down and see Mr. or Mrs. Jackson reading their Bible’s at this table.

After he passed away, Mrs. Jackson wanted to see if I would bring this set back to life. Mr. Jackson would have wanted me to. In his quiet way, he’d look at me and smile and say “it looks great honey, I’m so proud of you”. I just know he would if he were here right now. We miss you Mr. Jackson, but your love and spirit will always live on in me and countless others.

Prepping a Piece Full of Memories

This table had been well-loved over the years, but it was structurally sound, so giving it a refresh would be pretty smooth. Our only challenges were dealing with worn edges and an outdated finish. Underneath, I could see a fresh and sturdy beauty awaiting revival. Here are some pictures of the table and chairs before.

A Bold Black Table with a Warm Wood Top

For the table base, I chose a rich, black paint with a light distressing to give it a mix of modern tones & the timeless appeal of a table that has shared experiences with you. For the tabletop, we sanded it down and applied a medium stain that highlighted the natural grain. The result? A stunning contrast of sleek black and warm, rustic wood—a perfect blend of old and new.

Rustic White Chairs to Complete the Look

The six chairs were each painted in a soft white with a lightly distressed, rustic finish. The worn edges and brushed texture give them a farmhouse charm that pairs beautifully with the stained tabletop. Not only do they brighten up the set, but they also add that cozy, welcoming vibe I remember so vividly from my visits as a kid. And I love how they perfectly contrast with the table while completing the design with shared rustic elements.

Dining tables and chairs DO NOT have to match to create good design. Sometimes using a little contrast is exactly the right way to elevate the look.

Final Thoughts: Creating Beauty with Meaning

Flipping furniture is always rewarding, but when the piece has a personal history, the reward is even greater. This project reminded me how powerful design can be—not just visually, but emotionally. Ahh…winter! For us in upstate New York, we are accustom to dark mornings and braving the cold winds. After all, it does come with the territory, right? But what might not be widely talked about or embraced is how to set a home to complement these shorter days and chillier nights. Today, I am sharing some helpful and creative tips for styling your home for winter. Let’s jump in!

1. Embrace Layered Textures

Winter is the perfect time to introduce a variety of textures to make your space feel warm and inviting. Think plush throws, soft velvet cushions, and woven rugs. Layering these textures creates a sense of coziness that’s perfect for chilly weather.

• Living Room: Add a chunky knit throw to your sofa, and layer it with velvet or faux fur pillows for added warmth and comfort. A shaggy rug underfoot will also help ground the space and make it feel extra cozy.
• Dining Room: Consider a textured table runner or cloth in rich fabrics like linen or velvet. Incorporating placemats made of natural materials like rattan or woven fibers can also introduce warmth and texture to your winter dining experience.

• Living Room: Use this area to showcase cozy winter elements, such as a collection of candles in varying heights, a stack of firewood, or a favorite poem or verse above the mantel. If you don’t have a real fire, electric fireplaces or even just a beautiful arrangement of candles can provide that same inviting warmth.
• Dining Room: If your dining area is near a fireplace, ensure the seating arrangement maximizes the ambiance. You could also add candles to the dining table or surrounding shelves to give the space a warm, inviting glow.

Hi, friends!

Well, my guess is that in a few short weeks, many of us will be hosting people for Thanksgiving Day. I am not sure about you, but I have often found that this holiday is sometimes glossed over, being sandwiched between a growing emergence of halloween and harvest festivities and an earlier and earlier onset for Christmas prep! All good things mind you, but they don’t exactly carve out the right tenor and tone for as special a holiday as Thanksgiving. After all, if there is one attitude in life we should all be pursuant of it’s an attitude of thanks.

So today, I am sharing some beautiful design ideas with you as you plan for your day and get ready to host guests. I think it’s important to create a space that draws people in and allows them to gather and be grateful together! To do this, I like to create a warm & welcoming atmosphere that has a few touches of nostalgia for my holiday gatherings.

Below, I have outlined, step by step on how to do this your home. And by the way, Step Four might just be my favorite part!

STEP ONE: GET INSPIRED

STEP TWO: ASSESS TABLE & SEATING

Maybe you don’t need a new table and chairs, but in case you are looking, here are some ideas for you:

LAYER THREE: Create the Perfect Centerpiece

Start with something large for the middle. I like to start with something vintage, like a vintage pitcher or vase and add fresh flowers or even dried florals. Adding touches of mercury glass or faux dried stems will help create this effect if you don’t have something readily available.

STEP FOUR: Time to Give Thanks

Set aside some time to remind your guests why everyone is gathered on this day. Here are some ways to do this:

• Leave a personal note of thanks to each guest.
• Add special quotes about gratitude and thankfulness at each place setting.
• Provide a prompting question at each guest’s plate & then ask quests to share their responses with the table.

Notes and messages could be added to a napkin ring or out of a personalized cornucopia stuffed with greenery or even lined with parchment paper and filled with a small fruit salad. Have fun with this and make it your own!

If you struggle with pulling ideas together, this post is for you! When our client, Sandy, reached out to us, she asked us to help pull all of her ideas and various pieces of her project together. And just what was her idea? To use reclaimed barn wood as a table top for a new (much friendlier) dining table for her family! For the better part of five years, Sandy had a vision to use 200 year old boards from her barn as a table top to replace her current (not so useful) high-top table.

Sandy is a creative person and she could imagine the end result, but she was lacking a couple of things: first, she needed the right base to accompany the (what she knew would be) gorgeous top; second, she needed to find some new chairs that would work with her vision; and finally, she needed someone to get the project done. Well, as things would work out, Sandy scored the perfect base for her table. Sure it was in rough shape, but it was sturdy…it just needed the right top! (This is where the barn wood comes in!) So Sandy reached out to us and got her project rolling.

Shortly after meeting with us, Sandy sent an email and shared that she found some cool, vintage chairs that would work perfectly. Just like the base, the chairs were sturdy but needed a refresh. With the pieces in place, we got to work!

On the left you will see the base that she found second hand. It was a little scuffed up, but the base was well constructed and was sturdy. Similarly, the chairs (one shown on the right) were in pretty good shape with just a few scuffs, but solid in construction. Now that Sandy had all of the pieces, it was time to pull together her ideas into a plan of action!

A really neat part of completing a project

Bonus: Using Reclaimed Wood

It is important to understand that if you have or are considering using any kind of reclaimed wood as Sandy did with her barn wood, you need to know a few things:

• Condition – assess the integrity of the wood; does it have so many splits that it will not be functional?
• Prepped Appropriately – make sure the wood has been dried out and has been cleaned/cleared of any mites or small bugs that would potential damage the wood or would be harmful if not remediated; consider having the wood milled to ensure smooth and consistent lines.
• Ensure the Finish – you do not necessarily need to finish reclaimed wood, but it does depend on where/how it is going to be used. Be sure you double check with a professional to see if it should be sealed or oiled.

And now the after photos.

Just take a look at the top of the table. In working with Sandy, she was able to identify and communicate to us the edges she was hopeful to keep in tact as well as the spot of character she desired to have part of the finished top. We were able to incorporate and preserve those details and incorporate them into the design and finished outcome. It is stunning!

For Sandy’s project, we left the wood as is. It did not need to be sealed since Sandy had a glass top to put on it. Adding glass is a great way to keep things protected while enjoying the ability to see the beautiful wood. And, again, Sandy already had the glass, so she was able to reuse yet another piece to this project!

We used Benjamin Moore Black for the chairs and table base and distressed both so the details and history of each could be honored.

Here’s a picture of the newly customized table and refreshed chairs back at home. Oh, and Sandy also found some vintage Cushman chairs to accompany the set we customized for her. Due to the rareness of the Cushman chairs, Sandy chose to keep them in their original form. We love the combination of new mixed with old!

I love the table! It looks amazing at night with the reflection from the glass. It turned out beautiful!

There isn’t really anything to NOT LOVE about this story, but what makes my heart smile a little more is how beautifully all of the components came together! Sandy reused and repurposed and stayed patient to watch her new table and chairs come to life! Right?! Doesn’t it just make you happy!

I am so excited to share today’s Tuesday Treasure with you! Before I get to that, I want to give a shout out to my team and all they did for helping FunCycled host the 2024 Fall Festival a couple of weeks ago! It was a beautiful day, and I enjoyed spending time with old and new friends who stopped by! Check out some sweet photos from the event.

At the event, the 336 Food Truck really delivered on their latest offering…extra creamy hot cocoa with perfectly toasted marshmallow topping! I mean I had to try it! : )

Today, I am featuring our latest furniture makeover story which was actually the winner of our most recent Broken to Beautiful free furniture makeover initiative. For all of the details on FunCycled’s Broken to Beautiful, please read our full blog post here: FunCycled’s Broken to Beautiful.

This heartwarming makeover story relays the tale of a china cabinet passed down from a beloved grandparent to her adoring granddaughter. In Jessica’s own words, “it is a treasured heirloom that carries deep emotional and familial significance. This elegant piece embodies not only the craftsmanship and style of its time but also the warmth and love of my grandmother’s home.” Jessica also shared that her hope would be to use a restored version of the cabinet to display the fine china collection that had been curated by her grandmother on her father’s side. Both of these women have passed, but Jessica wanted to honor the heritage and legacies of each through this one piece of furniture, sure to keep their history and memories alive in a new way. Exactly the heart of Broken to Beautiful!

When we first spoke with Jessica to share with her that she had been selected as the recipient of the Summer Broken to Beautiful Initiative, she was beyond elated at the prospect of having this precious piece rejuvenated! I still recall her voice as it choked up with joy and overwhelm.

One really important component to the Broken to Beautiful initiative is that we desire to breathe new life into old or broken pieces of furniture in order to bring joy and hope into someone’s life! We are so glad that we got to do this for Jessica and her family.

Here are the photos of Jessica with her now refreshed china cabinet filled with the treasured china given to her! What a beautiful honor to both of her grandmother’s legacies!

And here are some additional details of the cabinet.

We painted the inside of the cabinet in Benjamin Moore Simply White and the whole exterior in Benjamin Moore Sweatshirt Gray. Those swatches are below, so you can see how these beautiful colors work together! Plus, as you see in the last photo above, we lightly distressed some of the edges around the door, the drawer, and molding of this item. When you take time to appropriately distress, it will emphasize and draw (well deserved) attention to all of the right details! And, we decided to keep the original hardware for this item. Keeping the same hardware is a way of preserving history and often is the only complement for an older piece like this cabinet.

I hope you had a great weekend! Maybe you have been doing some traveling, or maybe you are currently on a little getaway! Every year, my family and I go away during 4th of July week to a local campground where we can just relax and get off the grid for a bit! I love the simplicity of it and being a little more intentional and quiet with our time!

At FunCycled, we love working with clients to help restore and breathe new life into old pieces of furniture. Whether it is a chair, a side table, or bedroom furniture, taking something that is tired and refreshing it truly brings life to me and my team!

For one of my clients, Darcy, she and her husband were in the midst of selling one house and making the move to a new location in the Capital Region. As part of their plans, Darcy and her husband wanted to find a way to incorporate a special piece of furniture into the design of their new kitchen. When we met with Darcy to talk through her ideas, Darcy shared some photos of the total the kitchen renovation taking place in her new home and talked about how she was hoping to make her oversized secretary hutch to work with the design. Take a look at some before photos below. The photo in the middle is from our studio as we began prepping to paint!

What I love the most about this type of project is seeing the true craftsmanship of furniture! For Darcy’s piece, there is something extra about it though. I love the scale of it and the fact that it has shelves above enclosed behind detailed glass and ample closed in storage below–all surrounding the desk & accompanying compartments which live at the very center of the piece! To me, it could boast a million uses, but I guess its intent is to remain for exactly its purpose in Darcy’s new home! For this project, we used Benjamin Moore’s White Dove on the whole piece. I love the warmth of this beautiful white!

My friend and past client Brielle reached out to me to see if I could help her find a hutch for her dining room. She had a large, empty wall so we knew we had to find something large and tall. She gave me her budget and I got to work! In less than a day, I found this beauty and picked it up for her. It’s over 85″ long, and so full of character!! Take a look at the before photo:

We painted the whole piece (inside and out) in Benjamin Moore’s White Sand (image below). White Sand is a beautiful neutral color which met the goal of brightening up this hutch and yet keeping it warm.

And just check out this lovely transformation! With a lighter color paint, you are now able to appreciate the details of the molding at the top and edges of this hutch. Plus, the lighter color helps highlight the window lattice on the glass doors. Put simply, it is beautiful!

Here’s a closer look at the details! We also changed the hardware for our client to bring a more modern touch to the finished look!

Happy first day of Spring! Sometimes we are tempted to think it will never come, especially after a cold and snow-filled Winter (which we have not had), but here it is! Spring has arrived!

In today’s Tuesday’s Treasure, I want to share some inspiration for all of us as we transition from Winter to Spring.

Colors for Spring

At this point in the year, most of us are ready for something a little brighter in our homes. Check out these Spring inspired pieces of furniture we have been able to complete over the years!

Choosing the Right Color

With so many choices, it can be hard to know the how to make the right selection. To add a touch of Spring, I suggest choosing colors that are light and bright and remind you of what is happening outside as Spring arrives. Because the full bloom of colors doesn’t typically arrive until May and June in Upstate New York, I like to introduce greens and blues along with shades of white and gray. But you can also select other pastel colors to add a touch of color while still feeling bright and airy! Here are a few tips for making the selection for you:

• Keep in mind the style of the piece of furniture and what type of hardware it has or will have if you plan to change it.
• Consider what other colors you have in your space. Remember, they don’t have to be an exact match, but they should coordinate.
• If this is a new color you would like to introduce to your home, make sure to add a few other touches of that same color around the room.
• Take note of a bigger vision you have for the space, keeping in mind this might be a first step toward that vision!

Ways to Style

This is where you get to have a lot of fun! A “go to” item for me is styling with books! They add height, texture, and interest. Or grab a vase or pretty glass bottle in a bright or complementary color and add fresh greens. Depending upon your style and what you love, use the surface to display a special heirloom or antique, like this vintage camera atop the beautiful teal and gray-washed credenza.

Hi Friends! 

I hope you all had a great weekend! If you remember last week’s blog post, I was helping lead the Bloom event for our church this past weekend. What a success-over 400 women came out for a day of fun and living our best lives! We laughed, we cried, and had an absolute blast! Here’s a photo of me and my girlie, making the most of every moment!

In today’s Tuesday’s Treasure, I want to bust the myth that in order to update your home, you must get rid of everything you have in your home and begin with everything new. Sometimes we get bogged down by thinking we have to make huge changes in our homes to create impact and make things more “up to date.” The fact is this way of thinking is just not true. Maybe you are not sure where to begin or how to go about this, but I am here to help!

Here is an easy example of adding little updates to your home. Just like in this photo, you can use every day items to create special moments in any space! This particular inspiration is quick and easy to achieve. In case you missed it, check out the post here.

On a larger scale, making the most of your items is important when achieving updates. In a recent project, I want to share with you how we took one client’s dining table and transformed it into something more updated, giving her dining room a fresh new look!

And here’s the newly updated table! We took the outdated style, sanded and refinished with Valspar’s Sunbleached stain and added a protective clear coat to keep the table protected for years to come!

Take a look at this before photo. The style of the table worked fine, but the stain was all wrong and needed a fresh look.

Hi Friends!

How was your weekend? We enjoyed so many holiday festivities over the weekend! From a Christmas Jazz concert in Saratoga to lights in Washington County Fairgrounds. It was so nice to celebrate and enjoy with my family!

For this week’s makeover, I wanted to share a china cabinet makeover that we just finished and added to our online shop! You can purchase it today and have it delivered by Christmas!

Here’s the china cabinet when I bought it to rescue it:

We painted this piece with Magnolia’s paint line with their color Demo Day, installed wallpaper to the back panel on the inside, and added new hardware. This piece still has the glass on the front door, we just removed it for photos so you can see the inside better.
