When planning our trip to Italy, we knew Florence would be on the itinerary, but we had no idea it would completely steal our hearts. Out of every destination we visited on our family trip (following our unforgettable stops in Rome and Tuscany), Florence was our absolute favorite.

The incredible cuisine, world-class shopping, rich history, and stunning architecture came together to create a place we wished we had spent far more time exploring. In fact, after our first day, we loved it so much that we completely changed our plans and came back for a second day!

If you are planning your own Italian getaway, here are the top sights to see, local dining experiences, and best things to do in Florence, Italy. Plus my top tips to make your travels easier!

1. Avoid the ZTL: Crucial Florence Driving & Parking Tip

Before diving into the sights, here is a warning that will save you an expensive headache.

We almost made a major mistake before our Florence adventure even began. Like many visitors exploring Italy by car, we drove into Florence’s historic center looking for parking, unaware that much of the city is a ZTL (Zona a Traffico Limitato or Limited Traffic Zone). These zones are restricted to authorized vehicles, and unsuspecting tourists who drive into them receive heavy fines months after returning home.

Always double-check your parking garage location outside the ZTL boundary or ensure your garage registers your license plate upon arrival.

2. Indulge in Authentic Florentine Cuisine & Historic Dining

For our first evening, we booked a table at a historic restaurant dating back to the 1600s called Buca Mario that is recognized by the Michelin Guide. Watching the staff present and slice the steak tableside was an unforgettable culinary performance. Because the steak is served so thick, it continues cooking from its own residual heat right on your plate, meaning every bite offers a subtle, delicious variation in flavor.

If Florence is famous for one culinary staple, it is Bistecca alla Fiorentina, a massive, thick-cut T-bone steak traditionally cooked rare and served by weight.

Coupled with fresh handmade pasta, pillowy gnocchi, and exceptional Tuscan wine, it was a highlight of our trip! And yes, even the kids were completely blown away.

3. Grab Lunch at Local Delis and Mercato Centrale

While historic fine dining is a must, some of the best food in Florence is fast, fresh, and casual.

• Neighborhood Panini Shops: On our second day, we grabbed lunch at a tiny neighborhood deli where sandwiches were made fresh to order with regional cured meats, fresh mozzarella, and local olive oil. Simple, fresh, and perfection.

We chose La Saletta di Giuliano Firenze for the most delicious lunch offerings.

• Mercato Centrale: Imagine New York City’s Chelsea Market, but larger and completely dedicated to Italian gastronomy. Located in the San Lorenzo neighborhood, this multi-story market features vendors serving everything from wood-fired pizza and handmade pasta to fresh seafood, arancini, and cannoli. It is the ideal lunch stop for families or groups, as everyone can order from a different counter and sit together.

4. Explore the Historic Center, Viewpoints, and Renaissance Art

Florence is essentially an open-air museum. Wandering through the cobblestone streets leads you past stunning architecture, bustling piazzas, and incredible artwork at every turn.

• Piazzale Michelangelo & San Miniato: For sweeping, panoramic views of the city skyline, including the iconic Duomo, head up to the elevated terraces overlooking the city. It offers the best photo backdrop in all of Florence.

This is the front entry to the Duomo AKA Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore. Home to the largest masonry dome ever built.

• Stop by historic landmarks:

While marveling at the Renaissance masterpieces throughout the city, our kids offered a memorable review: “Too many naked statues!” They officially declared they had seen enough marble anatomy for one vacation, but the stunning surrounding architecture made it worthwhile for all of us. At least that is what we felt during our visit at

Palazza Piti was on the list of historic places to visit. Among its grandeur as a palace, you will find so much ornate detailing throughout. And, of course, what visit to a palace is complete without some over the top portraits!

I loved our stop at Santa Maria del Fiore, a cathedral central to the city of Florence. It is absolutely stunning inside! The architecture and ornate details totally appeal to my creativity!

• Family Travel Secret: Many state-run museums and historic sites in Italy offer free or heavily discounted admission for children under 18. Be sure to check ticket requirements online before booking.

5. Walk Across Ponte Vecchio & Shop for Italian Treasures

No trip to Florence is complete without strolling across the Ponte Vecchio, the famous medieval stone bridge lined with historic jewelry shops. Goldsmiths and jewelers have worked on this bridge for centuries, making it one of the premier places in Europe to acquire fine jewelry and handcrafted heirlooms.

Here we are just in front of the beautiful and iconic Bridge of Gold.

This is where I picked up a set of beautiful, traditional Italian cameo rings that I will treasure forever.

While I browsed the fine jewelry, the rest of the family explored neighboring boutiques, ranging from local clothing shops to the flagship LEGO store nearby.

6. Discover Local Artists and the Famous Leather District

Florence’s tradition of craftsmanship extends far beyond jewelry to fine art and genuine leather goods.

• Street Artists: As we wandered the side streets, we met a local painter selling his original work. We purchased a gorgeous painting, chatted with him about his craft, and took photos together. Instead of standard business cards, he handed out miniature cards featuring prints of his artwork which is truly perfect reflection of Florence’s creative spirit.

• The Leather District (Santa Croce): Located behind the Basilica of Santa Croce is Florence’s renowned leather district, home to artisan workshops and the famous Scuola del Cuoio (Leather School). While genuine Florentine leather is an investment, the quality is unmatched. We brought home handcrafted leather jackets, a durable leather backpack, and several accessories that we will use for decades.

7. End Every Day with Authentic Gelato

We sampled gelato across several regions of Italy, but Florence served up some of our absolute favorites. Grabbing a cup or cone quickly became our non-negotiable daily routine while strolling through the illuminated piazzas after dinner. Look for gelaterias that store their gelato in covered metal tubs (pozzetti) for the freshest, highest-quality treat.

Final Thoughts: Why Florence is a Must-Visit

If I had to recommend just one city to visit in Italy, Florence would sit at the very top of the list. It manages to feel grand yet warm and welcoming. The scale is walkable, the food is unmatched, and the shopping spans from world-class artisan treasures to local market finds.

We spent two days here, but we easily could have stayed for a week without running out of things to see. It is the kind of destination that immediately makes you start planning your return trip the moment you leave.

After the bustling energy and historic sprint through Rome, the second stop on our Italian adventure brought a welcome change of pace. Nestled in the heart of the countryside, Tuscany gave our family a chance to slow down, take a deep breath, and truly soak in the breathtaking beauty of Italy’s rolling landscapes.

If you are planning your own Tuscan getaway, here is our guide to where we stayed, our favorite day trips, and essential tips for making the most of your time here!

Getting Around: Why You Need a Car

Before diving into where we stayed, there is one essential thing to know: you really should rent a car if you stay on the outskirts.

While you can technically take the train between major regions, getting to rural towns or country estates requires a personal vehicle or arranging rides. Having our own car gave us total freedom to explore local spots on our own schedule, navigate scenic backroads, and take day trips without hassle.

Pro Tip: Make sure your rental car booking is sorted well before you arrive, and ensure you have local currency on hand for toll roads!

Where We Stayed: The Hidden Gem of Reggello

For our base in Tuscany, we stayed in Reggello at the beautiful Fattoria Degli Usignoli.

Reggello is a charming town situated just on the outskirts of local hot spots, making it a hidden gem for travelers looking to escape the heavy crowds and submerge themselves in true Tuscan culture. Surrounded by rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves, it provides a tranquil setting while still serving as an ideal base for day trips to Florence and the Chianti region.

Our time spent directly at Fattoria Degli Usignoli provided some of our favorite moments of the entire trip:

• Horseback Riding: Exploring the countryside on horseback was an unforgettable experience for the family.

• Hiking: Easy access to trails right outside our doorstep allowed us to explore at our own pace.

• Olive Groves: Walking through the estate’s stunning olive groves offered a peaceful, quiet escape that allowed us to step away from screens, restore our spirits, and enjoy uninterrupted family time.

Quick NOTE: While the grounds were absolutely stunning, the sleeping accommodations did not impress as much. Unfortunately, the beds were not that comfortable. I wouldn’t say it was horrible, but I do think it is worth noting.

Highlights & Day Trips

While our base was peaceful, we made sure to balance our downtime with some incredible day trips across the region.

1. Leaning Tower of Pisa & Piazza dei Miracoli

Visiting Pisa was a truly fun day out! And yes—the lean is just as obvious in person as it looks in photos.

Of course, we had to snap the classic family photos “holding up” the tower, but exploring the surrounding Piazza dei Miracoli was just as wonderful. Standing together beside such ancient, iconic architecture is always awe-inspiring, no matter how many times you’ve seen it in pictures.

Pisa is so much more than just a tower or structure or place to take a clever picture. The surrounding area is absolutely beautiful and rich with history. I am so glad we took time to enjoy

2. The Ferrari Museum

Even though we are seriously unlikely to ever own a collection of iconic vehicles (or even a single one!), we couldn’t pass up the chance to visit the Ferrari Museum while staying so close by. It turned out to be fascinating and a highlight for everyone. This is definitely worth adding to your itinerary if you’re traveling through the region. I mean you can dream, right?!

Quick Tips for Your Italy Trip

To help you prepare, here are a few quick practical tips to keep in mind (including a few carry-overs from our Rome guide that are just as crucial here!):

• Bring Cash (Euros): Cash is king for highway tolls and parking meters. Many places we visited did not accept credit cards.
• European Adapters: Pack wall adapters compatible with European standards so your devices stay charged.
• Passport Safety: Keep a clear photocopy of your passport saved in your email or printed at home as a secure backup.
• Language Assistance: Download Google Translate ahead of time. While tourist hubs have English speakers, many locals in smaller Tuscan towns do not.
• Dining Schedules: Italian breakfasts are light (usually just a coffee and a pastry). Keep in mind that many restaurants do not open for dinner until 7:00 PM—plan afternoon snacks accordingly if your family prefers eating earlier!
• The “Pizza Rule”: Proceed with caution when ordering pizza! In many places, toppings are added after the crust is baked, which can leave you with cold toppings on a warm crust.

Final Thoughts

Tuscany delivered the perfect balance of iconic sight-seeing and meaningful family connection. Whether we were marveling at Pisa, admiring supercars, or riding horses through olive groves in Reggello, it was a stop on our Italy trip that we will cherish for years to come.

Because home is where peace begins.

They say, “all roads lead to Rome,” but I didn’t realize mine would take a surprising detour through Ireland before I ever saw a single cobblestone of the streets of Rome. On our flight to Rome, we were hours into our flight when a medical emergency happened and a guy passed out on John and into the aisle. I was getting ready to do CPR when the flight attended stepped in and found that he had a pulse. Then a couple more hours later, another passenger had what seemed like a psychotic episode, that included (but was not limited to) yelling non stop for someone to restrain her, taking photos of other passengers and their children to let them know that they are in danger, pouring water on herself and others, and scratching the poor flight attendants. The pilot announced the emergency on board and asked for all law enforcement passengers to come to the back of the plane. They had to strap her down to the seat to restrain her, We were then detoured to Ireland so they could get help. I mean, I love Ireland, but that was certainly not in our planning! Anyway… a rocky start to our trip, but, I promise, there are much happier stories to come!

Where We Stayed: Grand Hotel Fleming

After being up all night on the flight, we landed and checked in at our firs hotel, The Grand Hotel Fleming. While the building is impressive and we enjoyed the breakfast there (yummy!), I’m not sure I would pick it again because of it’s location.

The hotel was further away from the downtown area than we anticipated, about a 25–30 minute drive. If you do choose to stay here to be away from the hustle and bustle, plan to rent a car and be prepared to pay for parking. And remember: you may need cash (Euros) for parking. Surprisingly, certain credit cards are not widely accepted in many parking areas (Discover)!

Day 1: The Colosseum & A Vespa Adventure

Our first stop was the Colosseum. This tour came to us in an unusual way. We missed our original slot due to the flight delay (Dublin emergency stop).

While walking down the large staircase from our parking spot to the base of the Colosseum, we connected with a local who was selling tickets on the side, offering “expedient entrance.” The risk-taker in me took over! After a fairly sketchy walk down what appeared to be a back alley and past a jail (fun fact: this was likely the famous Mamertine Prison where St. Peter was held!), we had tickets in our name and a tour guide. Because of that we got to skip the line, and get a small group tour with a guide It was the one thing my whole family agreed was a “must-see” before we went on this trip so I’m glad we took the risk; it was beyond amazing.

Palatine Hill

Near the Colosseum is Palatine Hill, the centermost of Rome’s major hills and the birthplace of the city itself. The ruins there point to a deep history, showing off both imperial grandeur and the far-reaching strength of ancient Rome.

Vespa Tour: A Must-Do!

After taking in the beauty of the hillside, we took a tour of the city by Vespa. I absolutely loved this! The adventurer in me was so excited to have the rush of open air, zipping alongside my family in traffic while catching the sights. This was probably my favorite part of the whole trip!

This excursion includes professional photos of you, iconic sights of the city, and special hidden moments that only a local guide can point out and capture for you! Well worth it! Here are some of the fun memories we collected:

Day 2: The Vatican & The Underground City

The Catacombs

Day two was another packed day, just the way the Trop family likes it! We began by touring the Catacombs, the ancient underground burial grounds dating from the 2nd to 5th centuries. Walking these tunnels was powerful; the walls are silent testaments to early Christian saints. You can even see some of the oldest renderings of Jesus and the apostles etched on the ceilings. I strongly recommend you see this; you will be inspired!

The Vatican

Next was a private tour of the Vatican. It was phenomenal, thanks to our guide, Barbara. Her father worked as a paralegal inside the Vatican, so her accounts offered a truly authentic, personal vantage point. We absolutely LOVED this!

Before you go, here a couple of important tips to keep in mind as you plan:

• Dress Code: Modesty is key. Shoulders and knees must be covered.

• Security: It’s a busy place; keep your passport and wallet close to your person at all times!

Winding Down

We concluded our day with a lovely dinner and wind down at Arlu, a beautiful restaurant with delicious cuisine, equally delightful in its flavor and presentation!

It was the perfect conclusion before heading to bed. We needed the rest to get ready for the next leg of our trip: Tuscany. But that is a story for another day. Stay tuned!

If you’ve ever spent a rainy afternoon binge-watching Gilmore Girls and wishing you could trade your morning commute for a seat at Luke’s Diner, I have a secret for you: Stars Hollow isn’t just a set on a Hollywood backlot, it’s a feeling you can actually find if you know where to drive. Thanks to my sis-in-law who took the lead on planning the ultimate girls’ getaway through the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut, me and my favorite gals had a chance to step into the very towns that inspired Amy Sherman-Palladino to create the world of Lorelai and Rory. From the iconic town greens and cozy “Chilton-esque” prep schools to the local bookshops where you can practically hear the “la-la-las” in the wind, we spent our days chasing that slow, storybook pace that makes you want to stay forever. So, grab your oversized coffee mug and travel with me through Washington Depot, New Milford, and Kent to find the real-life magic of the Gilmore world.

Gilmore Girls Must: Washington Depot & The “Chilton” Aesthetic

Our travels took us to Washington Depot, the town often cited as the primary inspiration for the show. There’s an undeniable sense of community here. It’s the kind where everyone seems to know their neighbor’s name and their favorite coffee order. I see how it would inspire such an iconic dynamic for the beloved characters of the show! Here are a few places to note when in Washington Depot:

Bookstore Bliss at Hickory Stick Bookshop: Rory would have lived here. It’s cozy, packed with character, and the perfect place to pick up a souvenir read. We also loved Shop Five Janes for unique finds and gift inspiration and the food market that feels like it came right out of the show.

Chilton Vibes at The Frederick Gunn School: For a true fan, seeing the architecture of The Frederick Gunn School is a must. It captures that prestigious, “steeped-in-tradition” Chilton energy perfectly.

Afternoon in New Milford: The Iconic Green

Next, we headed to New Milford, and let me tell you, the moment you see the Town Green, you’ll feel like you’re standing in the middle of a film set.

The centerpiece is the gazebo, which is a non-negotiable photo op for any fan.

After we got our pictures, we spent the afternoon meandering through the local boutiques. My absolute favorite was The Hunt. Their curation is incredible. Our girls, of course, had to pose with the iconic duo, too!

Here are a few of the sweet treasures found at The Hunt. I love the pewter collection next to this vivid blue planter!

Where to Stay & Unwind: The Litchfield Inn

If you want a stay that feels boutique, elegant, and “Emily Gilmore approved,” The Litchfield Inn is it. It’s the perfect home base for a girls’ trip because it feels like a true escape from the hustle and bustle. I love the blend of history & charm with comfort & elegance all in one beautiful place!

While away, we were sure to get a little pampering of our own with a pedicure at The Spa at Litchfield Hills. It was the perfect way to reset before our second day of exploring.

We also loved grabbing a morning latte and nibble for lunch at Toast & Company, which I highly recommend for anyone looking for fresh, delicious comfort food.

Final Destination: Kent & “Miss Patty’s” Barns

Before heading home, make your way to Kent, another stunning town that adds to the tapestry of the Litchfield Hills.

• Kent Barns gives major “Miss Patty’s” vibes. The rustic-yet-refined aesthetic of the barns and shops is the perfect conclusion to a Gilmore-themed weekend.
• The Scenic Route: If you’re heading back toward Ghent or the surrounding areas, do yourself a favor and stop by Bartlett House on your way out. Taking the scenic way back to Washington Depot only adds about 10 minutes to your drive, but it takes you through some of the most beautiful, “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” towns in Connecticut.

Final Thoughts: A Trip for the Soul

This trip wasn’t just about the locations; it was about the slow pace, the meaningful conversations, and the nostalgia of a show that feels like home. A huge thank you to my sis-in-law, Jessica, for planning this whole itinerary and letting me tag along for the ride!

My trip to see DeVOL in California was more than just a gallery visit; it was a deepening of my commitment to intentional, soul-filled design. Spoiler: The private island was a dream, the chocolate tour…not so much!

As a family who works hard so we can play hard, we booked an MSC cruise departing from New York City, hoping it would be a restful, fun, and adventurous getaway in the middle of a Northeast winter. Let’s just say parts of it lived up to the dream. Other parts? Well, they left us underwhelmed.

This post is a mix of our honest reflections, helpful travel tips, and the kind of review we wish we’d read before booking. If you’re a family who loves good design, meaningful travel, and a little more peace than party, read on.

Leaving NYC in Winter: Beautiful, But Cold & Cramped

We left out of NYC in January. This sounds romantic in theory, but the frigid temps meant all the outdoor decks and amenities were basically unusable for the first couple days. That left everyone crammed into indoor common areas that weren’t quite designed for that level of traffic.

If you’re someone who recharges through quiet or spacious environments, the first few days may feel overwhelming.

The Room: Tiny & Windowless

Yes, we knew cruise cabins would be small, but not having a window made it feel a bit like being in a prison. Josh enjoyed the cruise more than the rest of us (we love that for him!), but truthfully, it felt claustrophobic for the rest of us.

Although we had small accommodations, we were happy to at least have some interesting “backdrops” for photos throughout the cruise ship.

I wouldn’t say the interior of the ship was exactly my “style,” but the sheer size of it (along with the level of detail) certainly made it impressive.

Sea Days vs. Port Days: 4 at Sea, 3 on Land Felt Off-Balance

Here’s the breakdown of our week:

• Port Canaveral, FL – We visited the Kennedy Space Center, which was exciting but expensive and rushed. What should have been a $20 Uber became $90 one way because all 3,000+ people are getting off at the same time. We only had about 3 hours to explore, so we couldn’t do the full launchpad tour.

• MSC’s Private Island – This was our favorite day. It was beautiful, clean, and not overcrowded (a nice surprise). Unfortunately, it was windy and chilly (low 70s), so all outdoor activities like kayaking and paddleboarding were canceled. Still worth it for the view alone.

• Nassau, Bahamas – We visited the historic Queen’s Staircase, which was gorgeous, and then went to the Graycliff Chocolatier. The tour was underwhelming, especially at a price tag of $350+ for four people. Even though everything was walkable from the port, we’d 100% recommend skipping the organized excursion and going on your own instead.

Plus, I loved having an opportunity to walk around and take in some of the beauty of the local area. The colors were absolutely perfect against the tropical surroundings!

Activity Options: Karaoke, Origami & Not Much More

Most of the onboard activities skewed toward karaoke, trivia, origami, or casino-style entertainment. The shows were okay (some nights were better than others), but overall they were not on par with other cruise lines. Put simply, if you’re not into alcohol, gambling, or group dancing… things got old fast.

That said, we did meet an incredibly talented musician, Margo Messenger, who made the whole trip feel more special. Here’s her Instagram – give her a follow!

Final Days: A Bit Better, But Still Not “Us”

Our last two days at sea were smoother. The shows improved, we found little ways to make it work (hello, card games and people-watching), but we still couldn’t shake the feeling that seven days, with only three on land, wasn’t the right ratio for our kind of vacation.

One thing we always appreciate no matter where we go or what is “on our schedule” is a chance to try new foods and enjoy good cuisine. We definitely had some yummy options on the cruise, and I would say that the food was one of the BEST parts of our trip. If you’re a real foodie, maybe that would make all the rough parts of this cruise, completely worth it!

What We’d Do Differently (AKA: What You Should Know)

Overall, I would say this was just NOT the trip for us. I am glad we had the experience because it has given me an opportunity to share ways we would proceed differently. Here are my tips for making sure your cruise experience is a great one:

1. Only Cruise from Warm Locations

Embarking from NYC in winter meant two full days before hitting real warmth. If we cruise again, we’d fly to a warmer port first.

2. Splurge on a Balcony Room

Natural light changes everything. If your budget allows, a room with a balcony or even just a window makes a big difference.

3. Bring Entertainment

Games, books, puzzles, or even watercolor kits go a long way on sea days, especially if you’re not into the scheduled activities.

4. Get the Full Wi-Fi Package

The MSC messaging app sometimes didn’t work. Get the full Wi-Fi so you can stay in touch and make plans on board.

5. Don’t Rush Off the Ship

Disembarkation was chaotic. I am talking, like Black Friday meets airport security. Wait it out in your cabin if you can or get up early to be first in line. Trust us.

6. DIY Your Excursions

In Nassau and Port Canaveral, you’ll save a ton by skipping organized excursions. Book your ride ahead so you aren’t wasting a ton of time waiting for an uber or other transport. Research ahead and go at your own pace.

Final Thoughts: Cruising Isn’t for Everyone, and That’s OK

We love intentional living. We love beauty, creativity, and rest. This cruise, while filled with little bright spots and one amazing island day, just didn’t check the boxes for us.

That said, if you’re someone who thrives on constant activity, casino nights, and karaoke, this might be your dream trip. But if you’re like us and crave peaceful adventure, thoughtful design, and immersive cultural experiences, we’d recommend something more like…

•  Cruising fewer days at sea
•  Choosing warmer departure cities
•  Or opting for a different kind of vacation altogether

What to Expect at Design Camp

Although this may look different every year, the goal remains the same – to offer a place for growth, learning, support, and inspiration. Similar to the structure of a conference, Design Camp provides Key Note speakers, helpful Q&A sessions, and behind the scenes experiences that impart knowledge to broaden and deepen the scope of the interior designer.

Every day, we spent time in small groups focused on collaboration and discussion. Each group, typically around 10 people, was divided by years of experience. Being part of the Advanced group allowed me to connect with designers who have faced similar challenges and milestones, providing a space to exchange practical insights, learn from each other’s experiences, and gain ideas that I could immediately apply to my own business.

Every evening, we had dinner together as designers. I loved the way they structured this. Every night you were assigned to a different table of people which was another opportunity to build connections with new people. It was also during dinner that some of the Key Note speakers and the hosts would walk around and engage with us. I was able to talk with so many and I found it both grounding and insightful.

Highlights, Takeaways, and Practical Tips for Attending Design Camp

1. Consider the Investment
Design Camp is a significant investment, so weigh the cost carefully. Many attendees, including myself, find the ROI in knowledge, connections, and business strategies well worth it.

2. Stay on Premises if Possible
Your ticket does not include accommodations. While I stayed at an Airbnb, traveling back and forth added logistical challenges. Staying on-site provides convenience and allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience. If you need to save the money like I did, you can absolutely make it work staying at an airbnb.

3. Take Advantage of the Stunning Accommodations
The conference accommodations are designed to support both comfort and creativity—make the most of them to rest, reflect, and connect with other attendees.

4. Extend Your Travel Plans
If possible, add an extra day after the camp. This gives you time to debrief, reflect on key takeaways, and plan how to implement what you’ve learned. I didn’t do this and wished I had!

5. Focus on 2–3 Actionable Takeaways
You can’t implement everything at once. Identify the top 2–3 strategies that will have the biggest impact on your business in the next 6–12 months.

6. Create a Basic Implementation Plan
Once you’ve identified your key takeaways, scaffold a simple plan with steps and a timeline to ensure you can act on them effectively.

7. Balance Big-Picture Thinking with Practical Steps
Use the camp to dream big, but ground your takeaways in actionable steps. This balance ensures long-term growth without feeling overwhelmed.

Final Thoughts

Attending Design Camp reminded me how important it is to keep learning and refining the craft of design. Growth doesn’t just happen. It’s cultivated through connection, curiosity, and a willingness to keep improving. My goal is to bring that same spirit of growth into every client project, helping you create a home that feels personal, intentional, and peaceful. Arriving in Paradise: Rio Grande and the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve

After a short flight from New York to San Juan, our family was ready for sunshine and sea breezes. We headed straight to Rio Grande, a coastal town known for its championship golf courses and its close proximity to the lush El Yunque Rainforest. The anticipation was so real, and I am so glad that we got to book another family trip through Great Value Vacations. Booking travel is easy and affordable!

Our home base for the trip was the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico, a sprawling luxury resort tucked along Coco Beach. From the moment we arrived, the setting felt like a dream. There were towering palm trees, a sparkling pool, blissful sounds of the Atlantic waves, and stunning lodgings! Our oasis awaited us!

Plus the walkways were so perfectly manicured and filled with a delightful mix of native foliage. I loved it!

And just look at the inside of this resort! It was stunning!

Resort Days: Golf, Spa, and Beachside Bliss

Much of our trip was happily spent enjoying the resort. Josh and John played on the PGA-caliber golf course. They were in awe over the rolling greens framed by ocean views that made every swing simply unforgettable.

Travel Tip from Sarah

Meanwhile, Harmony and I experienced our first-ever spa day, which was pure bliss from start to finish. Between the soothing massages, serene atmosphere, and attentive staff, we walked out feeling like new people.

Afternoons often meant lounging by the pool or taking quiet walks along the shore. Look at my cutie feet just soaking in the sun!

And what would beach time be without a good kayak time. Just look at that gorgeous blue water!

Exploring Nature: The Original Rainforest Water Slide Tour

Of all our adventures, The Original Rainforest Water Slide Tour was the most thrilling. This excursion led us deep into El Yunque, where we hiked past tropical foliage and listened to the calls of exotic birds before arriving at a natural rock slide shaped by centuries of rushing water. I didn’t get a picture of any of us (going down the slide or otherwise), but I do have some fun family pics, after our fun day of water adventures!

Don’t overlook the right shoes for this! Wear water shoes with good grip, and bring a waterproof phone case if you plan to capture photos and videos along the way.

We also enjoyed some delicious foods while we were there. Exploring new foods and restaurants is ever a favorite part of our travel plans no matter where we go! Here we are at this yummy, local restaurant.

I loved having our dishes made with fresh seafood. What a treat always!

We spent a whirlwind day in Prague and made the most of every hour with a mix of guided tours, river cruising, unexpected adventures, and a five-course Czech meal that we won’t forget. Arriving in Prague: A Tricky Start

Our adventure began with a small hiccup. We were dropped off near our hotel at night and couldn’t actually see it from the drop-off point. If you’re staying near the city center like we were, be prepared to walk a short way uphill under a small overpass — the hotel will appear on your left. Without cell service, it took a kind woman at a nearby hotel and a quick look at Google Maps to point us in the right direction.

that way, you can have and use them offline!

The Best Way to See Prague in One Day: Bus, Boat & Walking Tour

With just one day in Prague, we knew we needed an efficient way to experience the city’s top sights — and the Prague 4-Hour City Tour delivered. It combined a bus ride, a Vltava River cruise, and a walking tour, all led by a knowledgeable guide. It was the perfect balance of convenience and immersion.

Our favorite part? Cruising along the Vltava (not the Danube — common mix-up!), which gave us a beautiful, panoramic view of the city’s historic sections and stunning architecture. For anyone with limited time, this tour is a must. Here’s the exact tour we took.

Unexpected Moments: Lost Phones and Language Barriers

Not everything went smoothly during our one day in Prague. While grabbing a quick bite at McDonald’s, one of us accidentally left a phone in an Uber. Without speaking Czech, getting it back turned into a mini adventure of its own. We learned how to use the Uber app’s “Lost Item” feature.

Thankfully, a helpful local stepped in to answer my call from the uber driver, and talked to him on our behalf. We met the Uber driver at a nearby parking lot, paid a small fee, and got the phone back. Crisis averted — and an important reminder to double-check your seats before exiting any ride.

Here’s Josh at the McDonald’s. Visiting as many international McDonald’s is always in his travel plans, but truthfully, the food was not that good.

On a brighter note, I would just like to share some neat photos that help showcase the beauty and culture of the city! These photos are taken from one of the oldest streets in Prague.

If you look closely, you can see that on many of the buildings they are marked by a symbol rather than a number. This one is the Key Building. I just love that little detail : )

The Prague Castle Complex: Bigger Than You Think

Of all the sights in Prague, the Prague Castle blew us away. We had no idea just how massive it is — it’s actually the largest ancient castle in the world! We learned that it would take 2 to 3 days to fully explore the palace itself and another 1 to 2 days to walk the grounds. In other words, we barely scratched the surface during our one day in Prague, but it left a strong impression.

This is Vitus Cathedral located around the complex. Isn’t it stunning!

Also, did you know Prague is known as the music capital of the world? It’s an inspiring city filled with music history, especially classical.

PICTURE ON THE LEFT BELOW: And speaking of music, I love this picture below that shows this 75 foot tall metronome that stands in Letna Park. The structure, constructed in 1991, was placed there to replace a large monument that previously honored Joseph Stalin.

A Five-Course Czech Dinner to Remember

To wrap up our day, we booked a 5-course meal experience that gave us a taste of traditional Czech cuisine in a cozy, intimate setting. The host was fantastic, and every dish felt like a warm embrace of Czech culture and flavors. It was easily one of the most memorable parts of our day. Final Thoughts: Why I’d Choose Prague Again

We visited Budapest, Vienna, and Prague during our trip — and if I had to pick one to return to, it would be Prague. Between the vibrant culture, beautiful views, rich history, and delicious food, this city has a unique charm that’s hard to beat.

Even though one day in Prague isn’t nearly enough to see everything, it’s just enough to fall in love with the city — and start planning your next visit.

Planning Your Own One Day in Prague?

Here’s what we recommend:

• Book a half-day tour combining bus, boat, and walking.
• Visit Prague Castle even if just briefly.
• Try a traditional Czech dining experience.
• Have Czech downloaded on google translate so you can interact easier with anyone who doesn’t speak English.

Travel Expectations

If you have ever considered taking a trip like this but are wondering how you could afford it, I want to encourage you to really consider doing it the way my family did. Thanks to the help of Great Value Vacations, our trip was easy to coordinate, filled with amazing sights, and amazingly affordable! 

Traveling to Vienna Full Immersion

Exploring a city in real time & in authentic ways is such a gift! Our trip allowed us to really immerse ourselves into the richness of this city in so many ways.

Vienna is a bustling city, complete with a lot to do and a lot to see. Like any other major city, when traveling to Vienna, you should spend some time in advance narrowing your choices and selecting the top items to suit you best. I want to share our experience and give you some tips along the way.

IKONO Interactive Vienna

We had about a half day when we first arrived. This meant we had time to check off one place on our “to see” list and still leave time for an authentic Austrian dinner! Our travels included a trip to IKONO Interactive. We were not sure exactly what to expect at IKONO, but the description compelled us, and I am really glad we went. Everything at IKONO is completely immersive!

I loved the funky, bright designs used throughout. Plus their use of lighting and retro patterns and displays added to experience. Check out this fun video during our visit!

Vienna’s Iconic Sights – Driving Tour of the City

This is a great way to see a whole lot of the city in a 2.5 hour window of time!

Rolling through the city in this vintage VW was so cool! Our guide was an architectural professor at the local university. He focused on history of the city, and architecture all throughout the tour. This combination was perfect for relaying the deep history of the country and...this was hands down, my favorite part of our Vienna trip! I would definitely recommend booking a driving tour of the city. We booked ours through Airbnb.

What impressed me most was not necessarily the major landmarks and buildings. True, all are amazing and beautiful. But it was seeing the city as a whole and getting a sense of It was the beauty of all of the streets, bustling with the thoroughfare of people and cars alike. Just look at the gorgeous architecture!

These iconic sights are filled with a richness that are no doubt best appreciated in person, but for sure you can understand their grandeur even from a car. HELPFUL TIP: See if your driver can pull over at some of the places for a quick photo opp! It doesn’t hurt to ask!

In this order below: Hofburg Imperial Palace, Schwendenpaltz Station, and Votivkirche (translated the Votive Church in English)

Vienna – 2 Palaces fit for a Queen

Well, who doesn’t love a good visit to a palace? Or say, two, at least for this empress. Technically, Empress Elizabeth ‘Sisi’ of Austria was also the Queen of Hungary, so I suppose two palaces seems fitting. But the truth, her reign was mixed with both political significance and tragedy. I enjoyed learning about her life and untimely death, the events and outcome still playing out in a legend among the people of Austria. You’ll have to do your own digging if you want to know more!

Sisi’s Castle, where her personal effects and legacy predominantly resides, is actually located in Hofburg Palace. But to really best understand and encapsulate the story and history of Empress ‘Sisi’ of Austria, you will find yourself on a expedition around the city, visiting both Hofburg Palace and Schonbrunn Palace.

Below are photos from the collection at Hofburg Imperial Palace. The gilded finishes next to the deep and luxurious red showcase elegance and grace befitting someone who carries the titles, ‘Queen’ and ‘Empress.’

And here are photos at Schonbrunn Palace. Our exploration of each room had me reeling. I could not get enough of the patterns! I especially love the detail of the wood floors. Look at the pattern on the inlay! Be sure to get the full palace tour or you’ll miss some of these room.

A Collection for the Ages

The empress had an extensive collection of carriages, many of which have been preserved or restored. Her collection is available to see at the Carriage Museum just adjoining the Palace at Schonbrunn. It started raining so we did this part spur of the moment to avoid the rain, and I’m so glad we did! It’s small but the carriages are jaw dropping!

Rich Culture of Vienna

Vienna, donned The City of Music, is rich in the Arts and has a deep and steadfast commitment to preserving history and tradition. These next three places made this endeavor come to life for me and my family.

#1 This is The Austrian National Library – one of Harmony’s favorite stops! It felt just like we walked into the library on the movie Beauty and the Beast! Stunning! Pictures don’t do it justice.

#2 St. Stephen’s Cathedral – this iconic church lives in the center of the city, standing as a landmark and reminder to uphold the traditions of Austria and remains a symbol of the country’s return to independence after the 2nd World War.

#3 The Vienna Opera House – make time for a show if you can! It’s a stunning venue!

Best Restaurant Experience – De Capo by far! We loved the family atmosphere and food was delicious! We had gnocchi with truffles, and white truffle gnocchi pizza with burrata and local prosciutto. The best thing we ate this trip!

• Definitely book a driving tour, and I think the one we used was perfect, linked here. It was very personalized because it was just our family in the car with our guide. Plus, he was so knowledgeable and knew how to navigate the city well!
