Our Honest Review of Cruising with MSC: What We Loved, What We Didn’t & What We’d Do Differently

Spoiler: The private island was a dream, the chocolate tour…not so much!

As a family who works hard so we can play hard, we booked an MSC cruise departing from New York City, hoping it would be a restful, fun, and adventurous getaway in the middle of a Northeast winter. Let’s just say parts of it lived up to the dream. Other parts? Well, they left us underwhelmed.

This post is a mix of our honest reflections, helpful travel tips, and the kind of review we wish we’d read before booking. If you’re a family who loves good design, meaningful travel, and a little more peace than party, read on.

Leaving NYC in Winter: Beautiful, But Cold & Cramped

We left out of NYC in January. This sounds romantic in theory, but the frigid temps meant all the outdoor decks and amenities were basically unusable for the first couple days. That left everyone crammed into indoor common areas that weren’t quite designed for that level of traffic.

If you’re someone who recharges through quiet or spacious environments, the first few days may feel overwhelming.

The Room: Tiny & Windowless

Yes, we knew cruise cabins would be small, but not having a window made it feel a bit like being in a prison. Josh enjoyed the cruise more than the rest of us (we love that for him!), but truthfully, it felt claustrophobic for the rest of us.

Although we had small accommodations, we were happy to at least have some interesting “backdrops” for photos throughout the cruise ship.

I wouldn’t say the interior of the ship was exactly my “style,” but the sheer size of it (along with the level of detail) certainly made it impressive.

Sea Days vs. Port Days: 4 at Sea, 3 on Land Felt Off-Balance

Here’s the breakdown of our week:

Port Canaveral, FL – We visited the Kennedy Space Center, which was exciting but expensive and rushed. What should have been a $20 Uber became $90 one way because all 3,000+ people are getting off at the same time. We only had about 3 hours to explore, so we couldn’t do the full launchpad tour.

MSC’s Private Island – This was our favorite day. It was beautiful, clean, and not overcrowded (a nice surprise). Unfortunately, it was windy and chilly (low 70s), so all outdoor activities like kayaking and paddleboarding were canceled. Still worth it for the view alone.

Nassau, Bahamas – We visited the historic Queen’s Staircase, which was gorgeous, and then went to the Graycliff Chocolatier. The tour was underwhelming, especially at a price tag of $350+ for four people. Even though everything was walkable from the port, we’d 100% recommend skipping the organized excursion and going on your own instead.

Plus, I loved having an opportunity to walk around and take in some of the beauty of the local area. The colors were absolutely perfect against the tropical surroundings!

Activity Options: Karaoke, Origami & Not Much More

Most of the onboard activities skewed toward karaoke, trivia, origami, or casino-style entertainment. The shows were okay (some nights were better than others), but overall they were not on par with other cruise lines. Put simply, if you’re not into alcohol, gambling, or group dancing… things got old fast.

That said, we did meet an incredibly talented musician, Margo Messenger, who made the whole trip feel more special. Here’s her Instagram – give her a follow!

Final Days: A Bit Better, But Still Not “Us”

Our last two days at sea were smoother. The shows improved, we found little ways to make it work (hello, card games and people-watching), but we still couldn’t shake the feeling that seven days, with only three on land, wasn’t the right ratio for our kind of vacation.

One thing we always appreciate no matter where we go or what is “on our schedule” is a chance to try new foods and enjoy good cuisine. We definitely had some yummy options on the cruise, and I would say that the food was one of the BEST parts of our trip. If you’re a real foodie, maybe that would make all the rough parts of this cruise, completely worth it!

What We’d Do Differently (AKA: What You Should Know)

Overall, I would say this was just NOT the trip for us. I am glad we had the experience because it has given me an opportunity to share ways we would proceed differently. Here are my tips for making sure your cruise experience is a great one:

1. Only Cruise from Warm Locations

Embarking from NYC in winter meant two full days before hitting real warmth. If we cruise again, we’d fly to a warmer port first.

2. Splurge on a Balcony Room

Natural light changes everything. If your budget allows, a room with a balcony or even just a window makes a big difference.

3. Bring Entertainment

Games, books, puzzles, or even watercolor kits go a long way on sea days, especially if you’re not into the scheduled activities.

4. Get the Full Wi-Fi Package

The MSC messaging app sometimes didn’t work. Get the full Wi-Fi so you can stay in touch and make plans on board.

5. Don’t Rush Off the Ship

Disembarkation was chaotic. I am talking, like Black Friday meets airport security. Wait it out in your cabin if you can or get up early to be first in line. Trust us.

6. DIY Your Excursions

In Nassau and Port Canaveral, you’ll save a ton by skipping organized excursions. Book your ride ahead so you aren’t wasting a ton of time waiting for an uber or other transport. Research ahead and go at your own pace.

Final Thoughts: Cruising Isn’t for Everyone, and That’s OK

We love intentional living. We love beauty, creativity, and rest. This cruise, while filled with little bright spots and one amazing island day, just didn’t check the boxes for us.

That said, if you’re someone who thrives on constant activity, casino nights, and karaoke, this might be your dream trip. But if you’re like us and crave peaceful adventure, thoughtful design, and immersive cultural experiences, we’d recommend something more like…

Cruising fewer days at sea
Choosing warmer departure cities
Or opting for a different kind of vacation altogether

What to Expect at Design Camp

Although this may look different every year, the goal remains the same – to offer a place for growth, learning, support, and inspiration. Similar to the structure of a conference, Design Camp provides Key Note speakers, helpful Q&A sessions, and behind the scenes experiences that impart knowledge to broaden and deepen the scope of the interior designer.

Every day, we spent time in small groups focused on collaboration and discussion. Each group, typically around 10 people, was divided by years of experience. Being part of the Advanced group allowed me to connect with designers who have faced similar challenges and milestones, providing a space to exchange practical insights, learn from each other’s experiences, and gain ideas that I could immediately apply to my own business.

Every evening, we had dinner together as designers. I loved the way they structured this. Every night you were assigned to a different table of people which was another opportunity to build connections with new people. It was also during dinner that some of the Key Note speakers and the hosts would walk around and engage with us. I was able to talk with so many and I found it both grounding and insightful.

We had several opportunities to enjoy creative spaces from a different vantage point. How valuable to see from another perspective! We were able to tour these spaces and glean knowledge that could help our businesses grow and scale up.

Highlights, Takeaways, and Practical Tips for Attending Design Camp

1. Consider the Investment
Design Camp is a significant investment, so weigh the cost carefully. Many attendees, including myself, find the ROI in knowledge, connections, and business strategies well worth it.

2. Stay on Premises if Possible
Your ticket does not include accommodations. While I stayed at an Airbnb, traveling back and forth added logistical challenges. Staying on-site provides convenience and allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience. If you need to save the money like I did, you can absolutely make it work staying at an airbnb.

3. Take Advantage of the Stunning Accommodations
The conference accommodations are designed to support both comfort and creativity—make the most of them to rest, reflect, and connect with other attendees.

4. Extend Your Travel Plans
If possible, add an extra day after the camp. This gives you time to debrief, reflect on key takeaways, and plan how to implement what you’ve learned. I didn’t do this and wished I had!

5. Focus on 2–3 Actionable Takeaways
You can’t implement everything at once. Identify the top 2–3 strategies that will have the biggest impact on your business in the next 6–12 months.

6. Create a Basic Implementation Plan
Once you’ve identified your key takeaways, scaffold a simple plan with steps and a timeline to ensure you can act on them effectively.

7. Balance Big-Picture Thinking with Practical Steps
Use the camp to dream big, but ground your takeaways in actionable steps. This balance ensures long-term growth without feeling overwhelmed.

Puerto Rico Family Vacation: Relaxation and Rainforest Adventures in Rio Grande

Arriving in Paradise: Rio Grande and the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve

After a short flight from New York to San Juan, our family was ready for sunshine and sea breezes. We headed straight to Rio Grande, a coastal town known for its championship golf courses and its close proximity to the lush El Yunque Rainforest. The anticipation was so real, and I am so glad that we got to book another family trip through Great Value Vacations. Booking travel is easy and affordable!

Our home base for the trip was the Hyatt Regency Grand Reserve Puerto Rico, a sprawling luxury resort tucked along Coco Beach. From the moment we arrived, the setting felt like a dream. There were towering palm trees, a sparkling pool, blissful sounds of the Atlantic waves, and stunning lodgings! Our oasis awaited us!

Plus the walkways were so perfectly manicured and filled with a delightful mix of native foliage. I loved it!

And just look at the inside of this resort! It was stunning!

Resort Days: Golf, Spa, and Beachside Bliss

Much of our trip was happily spent enjoying the resort. Josh and John played on the PGA-caliber golf course. They were in awe over the rolling greens framed by ocean views that made every swing simply unforgettable.

Meanwhile, Harmony and I experienced our first-ever spa day, which was pure bliss from start to finish. Between the soothing massages, serene atmosphere, and attentive staff, we walked out feeling like new people.

Afternoons often meant lounging by the pool or taking quiet walks along the shore. Look at my cutie feet just soaking in the sun!

And what would beach time be without a good kayak time. Just look at that gorgeous blue water!

Exploring Nature: The Original Rainforest Water Slide Tour

Of all our adventures, The Original Rainforest Water Slide Tour was the most thrilling. This excursion led us deep into El Yunque, where we hiked past tropical foliage and listened to the calls of exotic birds before arriving at a natural rock slide shaped by centuries of rushing water. I didn’t get a picture of any of us (going down the slide or otherwise), but I do have some fun family pics, after our fun day of water adventures!

Don’t overlook the right shoes for this! Wear water shoes with good grip, and bring a waterproof phone case if you plan to capture photos and videos along the way.

We also enjoyed some delicious foods while we were there. Exploring new foods and restaurants is ever a favorite part of our travel plans no matter where we go! Here we are at this yummy, local restaurant.

I loved having our dishes made with fresh seafood. What a treat always!

One Day in Prague: Best Places to Visit in 24 Hours

We spent a whirlwind day in Prague and made the most of every hour with a mix of guided tours, river cruising, unexpected adventures, and a five-course Czech meal that we won’t forget. Here’s everything you need to know if you’re planning your own one-day itinerary in Prague.

Arriving in Prague: A Tricky Start

Our adventure began with a small hiccup. We were dropped off near our hotel at night and couldn’t actually see it from the drop-off point. If you’re staying near the city center like we were, be prepared to walk a short way uphill under a small overpass — the hotel will appear on your left. Without cell service, it took a kind woman at a nearby hotel and a quick look at Google Maps to point us in the right direction.

The Best Way to See Prague in One Day: Bus, Boat & Walking Tour

With just one day in Prague, we knew we needed an efficient way to experience the city’s top sights — and the Prague 4-Hour City Tour delivered. It combined a bus ride, a Vltava River cruise, and a walking tour, all led by a knowledgeable guide. It was the perfect balance of convenience and immersion.

Our favorite part? Cruising along the Vltava (not the Danube — common mix-up!), which gave us a beautiful, panoramic view of the city’s historic sections and stunning architecture. For anyone with limited time, this tour is a must. Here’s the exact tour we took.

Unexpected Moments: Lost Phones and Language Barriers

Not everything went smoothly during our one day in Prague. While grabbing a quick bite at McDonald’s, one of us accidentally left a phone in an Uber. Without speaking Czech, getting it back turned into a mini adventure of its own. We learned how to use the Uber app’s “Lost Item” feature.

Thankfully, a helpful local stepped in to answer my call from the uber driver, and talked to him on our behalf. We met the Uber driver at a nearby parking lot, paid a small fee, and got the phone back. Crisis averted — and an important reminder to double-check your seats before exiting any ride.

Here’s Josh at the McDonald’s. Visiting as many international McDonald’s is always in his travel plans, but truthfully, the food was not that good.

On a brighter note, I would just like to share some neat photos that help showcase the beauty and culture of the city! These photos are taken from one of the oldest streets in Prague.

If you look closely, you can see that on many of the buildings they are marked by a symbol rather than a number. This one is the Key Building. I just love that little detail : )

The Prague Castle Complex: Bigger Than You Think

Of all the sights in Prague, the Prague Castle blew us away. We had no idea just how massive it is — it’s actually the largest ancient castle in the world! We learned that it would take 2 to 3 days to fully explore the palace itself and another 1 to 2 days to walk the grounds. In other words, we barely scratched the surface during our one day in Prague, but it left a strong impression.

Also, did you know Prague is known as the music capital of the world? It’s an inspiring city filled with music history, especially classical.

PICTURE ON THE LEFT BELOW: And speaking of music, I love this picture below that shows this 75 foot tall metronome that stands in Letna Park. The structure, constructed in 1991, was placed there to replace a large monument that previously honored Joseph Stalin.

A Five-Course Czech Dinner to Remember

To wrap up our day, we booked a 5-course meal experience that gave us a taste of traditional Czech cuisine in a cozy, intimate setting. The host was fantastic, and every dish felt like a warm embrace of Czech culture and flavors. It was easily one of the most memorable parts of our day. Final Thoughts: Why I’d Choose Prague Again

We visited Budapest, Vienna, and Prague during our trip — and if I had to pick one to return to, it would be Prague. Between the vibrant culture, beautiful views, rich history, and delicious food, this city has a unique charm that’s hard to beat.

Even though one day in Prague isn’t nearly enough to see everything, it’s just enough to fall in love with the city — and start planning your next visit.

Taking the time to travel with my family is a major priority for me! This winter, we got to journey through Central Europe, making stops in 3 major cities. Beyond making some wonderful memories, this trip was filled with vibrant history, beautiful sights, and amazing new foods! Come along as I share our journey through Vienna, Austria!

Travel Expectations

If you have ever considered taking a trip like this but are wondering how you could afford it, I want to encourage you to really consider doing it the way my family did. Thanks to the help of Great Value Vacations, our trip was easy to coordinate, filled with amazing sights, and amazingly affordable!

Traveling to Vienna Full Immersion

Exploring a city in real time & in authentic ways is such a gift! Our trip allowed us to really immerse ourselves into the richness of this city in so many ways.

Vienna is a bustling city, complete with a lot to do and a lot to see. Like any other major city, when traveling to Vienna, you should spend some time in advance narrowing your choices and selecting the top items to suit you best. I want to share our experience and give you some tips along the way.

IKONO Interactive Vienna

We had about a half day when we first arrived. This meant we had time to check off one place on our “to see” list and still leave time for an authentic Austrian dinner! Our travels included a trip to IKONO Interactive. We were not sure exactly what to expect at IKONO, but the description compelled us, and I am really glad we went. Everything at IKONO is completely immersive!

I loved the funky, bright designs used throughout. Plus their use of lighting and retro patterns and displays added to experience. Check out this fun video during our visit!

Vienna’s Iconic Sights – Driving Tour of the City

This is a great way to see a whole lot of the city in a 2.5 hour window of time!

Rolling through the city in this vintage VW was so cool! Our guide was an architectural professor at the local university. He focused on history of the city, and architecture all throughout the tour. This combination was perfect for relaying the deep history of the country and...this was hands down, my favorite part of our Vienna trip! I would definitely recommend booking a driving tour of the city. We booked ours through Airbnb.

What impressed me most was not necessarily the major landmarks and buildings. True, all are amazing and beautiful. But it was seeing the city as a whole and getting a sense of It was the beauty of all of the streets, bustling with the thoroughfare of people and cars alike. Just look at the gorgeous architecture!

These iconic sights are filled with a richness that are no doubt best appreciated in person, but for sure you can understand their grandeur even from a car. HELPFUL TIP: See if your driver can pull over at some of the places for a quick photo opp! It doesn’t hurt to ask!

Vienna – 2 Palaces fit for a Queen

Well, who doesn’t love a good visit to a palace? Or say, two, at least for this empress. Technically, Empress Elizabeth ‘Sisi’ of Austria was also the Queen of Hungary, so I suppose two palaces seems fitting. But the truth, her reign was mixed with both political significance and tragedy. I enjoyed learning about her life and untimely death, the events and outcome still playing out in a legend among the people of Austria. You’ll have to do your own digging if you want to know more!

Sisi’s Castle, where her personal effects and legacy predominantly resides, is actually located in Hofburg Palace. But to really best understand and encapsulate the story and history of Empress ‘Sisi’ of Austria, you will find yourself on a expedition around the city, visiting both Hofburg Palace and Schonbrunn Palace.

Below are photos from the collection at Hofburg Imperial Palace. The gilded finishes next to the deep and luxurious red showcase elegance and grace befitting someone who carries the titles, ‘Queen’ and ‘Empress.’

And here are photos at Schonbrunn Palace. Our exploration of each room had me reeling. I could not get enough of the patterns! I especially love the detail of the wood floors. Look at the pattern on the inlay! Be sure to get the full palace tour or you’ll miss some of these room.

A Collection for the Ages

The empress had an extensive collection of carriages, many of which have been preserved or restored. Her collection is available to see at the Carriage Museum just adjoining the Palace at Schonbrunn. It started raining so we did this part spur of the moment to avoid the rain, and I’m so glad we did! It’s small but the carriages are jaw dropping!

Rich Culture of Vienna

Vienna, donned The City of Music, is rich in the Arts and has a deep and steadfast commitment to preserving history and tradition. These next three places made this endeavor come to life for me and my family.

#1 This is The Austrian National Library – one of Harmony’s favorite stops! It felt just like we walked into the library on the movie Beauty and the Beast! Stunning! Pictures don’t do it justice.

#2 St. Stephen’s Cathedral – this iconic church lives in the center of the city, standing as a landmark and reminder to uphold the traditions of Austria and remains a symbol of the country’s return to independence after the 2nd World War.

#3 The Vienna Opera House – make time for a show if you can! It’s a stunning venue!

Traveling to Budapest – This Hidden Gem Awaits

Hi friends! Have you ever really considered this…traveling to Budapest that is? My guess is that a trip to central Europe may not be someone’s first thought, but let me assure you, it should be on your list! Central Europe is like the ultimate hidden gem of travel—packed with vibrant history, charming cities, and some of the most picturesque landscapes you’ll ever see.

Recently, my family and I packed our bags and headed off to explore the sights of 3 major cities in central Europe over a week’s time. Over the next few months, I will be sharing about each of our visits, providing special highlights and tips along the way!

Our first stop is Budapest, capital of Hungary and rich with history and stunning architecture. Thanks to the help of Great Value Vacations, our trip was easy to coordinate, filled with amazing sights, and amazingly affordable! We booked a walking tour of Budapest to cover as much ground as possible, and I am excited to share it with you. That in mind, join with me as we journey through the beautiful sites of Budapest!

Hungarian State Opera House

First known as the Hungarian Royal Opera House, this architectural beauty hosts some of the most well known operas and ballets to grace a stage. Featuring the magnificence of new-Renaissance style, both the inside and outside of this structure boasts exquisite detail and grandeur commensurate with some of the most iconic places to visit in all of Europe. The materials used to create this grand scale include oak, cedar, marble, bronze, steel, and other natural stone. Take a look at these gorgeous pictures which display the ornate arches present in the covered porticos and walkways on the the exterior as well as the halls and passways within.

City Park & Heroes’ Square

Covering an area of approximately 302 acres, I recommend visiting City Park, Hungary’s largest public park. Amidst the wide offering for relaxation, City Park is a center for botanical gardens, museums, art, and history. One popular place is Heroes’ Square and serves as a central meeting point for the history and culture of Budapest. You will see in the photos below the iconic statues that form the Millennium Monument, a commemoration for the founding of Hungary.

Strudels – Delightful Treats in Budapest

We took a little time to stroll and explore the sights, and we decided to stop and enjoy a little bite to eat. At The First Strudel House, we got filled up with delicious strudel while enjoying the cozy and warm atmosphere. It was the perfect thing for a mid day pick me up!

Exploring the History & Culture of Budapest

The next few places as part of our walking tour led us to 3 historical pillars of this rich city. Vajdahunyad Castle, Szechenyi Baths & Pool, and St. Stephen’s Basilica are all major landmarks of Budapest and showcase the beautiful and grand architecture of Hungary.

The yellow building you see is the ‘palace’ structure that encompasses indoor spas and surrounds the outdoor pool of the Szechenyi Baths & Pool, the largest spa in all of Europe! Next to that, you will see St. Stephen’s Basilica, one of Hungary’s most treasured and blessed churches.

After a short visit, our journey led us to a deeper dive into the history and government of Hungary. Szabadsag ter, a local park near the main government building is home to memorials and monuments that pay recognition to the liberation of Hungary from communist rule and domination under the Nazi occupation. Although I don’t have any pictures to share, this park serves to memorialize freedom for the people of Hungary, an endeavor that was not finalized until 1989 for this country.

Hungary is now a Parliamentary Republic. Budapest, as capital of Hungary, is home to the official government offices, and our tour allowed us to stop by and see the outside of the Hungarian Parliament Building. It is beautiful. I wish we had an opportunity to go inside as I feel like it would have been worth the extra time. Below are some pictures. Just look at the grandeur!

Next up we strolled by the Danube River and found our way to Szechenyi Lanchid. Spanning over 1,200 ft. this iconic bridge stretches over the Danube, bridging the Eastern and Western sides of Budapest. We did not get any photos, but it is quite a sight!

Buda Castle – Iconic District of Budapest

Next we found our way to Buda Castle. Although the name may seem like a single destination, Buda Castle is much more. This palatial complex includes (you guessed it!) a castle as well as museums, historic buildings and churches. Most impressive to me was seeing Matthias Church, featured below. Also known as the Church of Our Lady, this landmark is one of the oldest in the city, making it a true story telling stop and well worth the time.

Take note of the roof top at Matthias Church. From a distance you are not able to see it, but when you get a closer look, the roof is made of thousands of tiles – around 149,000 actually.

Details just as magnificent as those ceramic tiles are featured on every inch of the inside of this church. Take a look at the intricate patterns adorning the walls, windows, and arches within the interior walls.

Our final stop at the Buda Castle District was at Fisherman’s Bastion, a historical monument and architectural feature known of Budapest. Overlooking the whole of the Buda Castle District, views from the bastion are breathtaking! You can see for miles out into the whole city.

Saying Farewell

To conclude our travels, we finished with dinner at Koleves Kert. This restaurant also offers allergy friendly choices in addition to some traditional Hungarian dishes. Great place!

Claimed as the most beautiful in the world, this McDonald’s simply WOWS! Making a visit to the golden arches (present or not) around the world is on Josh’s must do list, so I am so happy we made it!

#3 Trying local cuisine.

Branching out and exploring new foods always makes my travel itinerary. In Budapest, I would say you ABSOLUTELY MUST try the delicious chimney cakes! These delights are made from sweetened dough wrapped around a dowel and cooked over an open flame, then stuffed with an assortment of yummy fillings of your choosing.

Tips for Happy Journeys to Budapest

If you are considering a trip to Budapest (or even another destination), here are my top tips for making sure your experience is great!

Pack a charger for all country types. Select one like this from Amazon – it will accommodate all of your needs!
Get your tickets ahead of time, particularly for Parliament.
Be sure to have tip money (and I mean cash) ready to go. In Budapest, it is a cultural norm to tip the folks who are serving in a variety of stations and capacities.
Have Google translate on phone and ready to go. Some people speak English, but it is not as widely used as you might think. A quick translation will be so helpful for you.
Uber is easier than public transit. Although the public transportation options are available, we found that taking an uber to most places was the easiest.
Book guided walking tours. There is a lot to see and you won’t likely be able to get to all of it. Having a guided walking tour hits as many places as possible and keeps you moving!

Tips for an Affordable Family Trip To Ireland

Hi Friends!

How was your weekend? I hope all is going well there! If you follow us on FunCycled’s Facebook or Instagram, you saw that we went on a family trip to Ireland over spring break, and I promised I’d share more details on our blog so you can consider a trip like this, too!

I HIGHLY recommend Ireland, and especially at this season of life that we’re in. Because Ireland is so much about the ocean and the castles, I think a trip like this would be tricky if you had small kids or if you and had trouble climbing stairs. We climbed SO many steps! We loved every minute of it, and so did our teens (14 and 15).

We chose to go oversees because we looked into flying to Phoenix for the week and the airfare alone was $3,900 for our family of 4. We went on Great Value Vacation’s site for trips under $1,000 and shared with our kids the lists of places that came up (and NO they didn’t sponsor this post lol). Their top 2 picks were Rome or Ireland. I thought Ireland would be better because Rome may bore them after 4-5 days of walking and looking at old buildings. It was such a great spot because it came with a rental car, and jet lag was no joke for us. I think if we didn’t have driving each day where the kids could sleep in the car, it wouldn’t have been enjoyable. They needed the rest!

We started our trip in Dublin! When we were in the airport getting ready, we met a college student from Dublin who was so sweet and looked through my itinerary to give me her tips for the best places to go!

We spent the first day in Dublin, and went to Trinity College first. It was such a beautiful campus and you can also view the Book of Kells while you were there. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time but really wanted to. So many people recommended it to us!

If you walk from Trinity to Grafton Street, you’ll see some amazing stores, an icecream shop called Murphy’s and the best hot chocolate I had in Ireland at Butler’s Chocolate Cafe. I was sad that Ireland’s hot chocolate didn’t compare to Paris or London’s. This was the only spot that I liked the hot chocolate!

We also had a really good breakfast at the Lovely Food Co.

We rented a car for this trip, but driving in Ireland is nothing like here in the States. The roads are more narrow than our driveway, you drive on the opposite side of the road, there’s no shoulder, and the speeds allowed feels like there’s no way you could actually go that fast. We headed to the Hoban Hotel in Kilkenny. I liked this hotel the best of all the ones we stayed in. Really cute design, comfy beds, and pretty good food.

We headed out to Kilkenny Castle for a tour! This castle was really beautiful and very ornate inside. What set this castle apart from the other castles on our trip were the gardens. They were really beautiful, and it was built next to a river.

Be sure to go across the street from the castle for the restaurant, shops, and gardens. They were really cute!

My therapist told me her favorite spot in Ireland was the Rock of Cashel, and it definitely did not disappoint! It was built in 1101, and that’s hard to even wrap my head around. I felt like I shouldn’t even be stepping on the stones.

We headed to Celtic Ross Hotel, and it was just ok. It wasn’t that comfortable, and it felt really out of the way from the places we were going. Our very favorite meal was a restaurant right near this hotel though! It’s called Jack’s at Pilgrims Rest ; they forage everything from 10km or less from the restaurant, and you could tell. It was all so fresh, creative, and unique. I also loved the design of the interior.

Up next we visited the Blarney Castle which was beautiful in a different way. It was more like ruins, but it had beautiful grounds and an old house and carriage area you could tour. We didn’t give ourself enough time for this. I would recommend 2-3 hours! Oh, and YES the kids kissed the Blarney Stone.

When we asked the locals about what we should do, they recommend that we drive on the Wild Atlantic Way. There aren’t many places to pull over and get good photos in Ireland, but here are a few spots we were able to so you can see how beautiful Ireland was!

We also went to a town called Dingle (insert every inappropriate joke here). It was cute, but I’m not sure it was worth the drive. If you’re in the area, you should definitely stop by! We found an adorable cheese shop called The Little Cheese Shop and bought cheese and fresh bread for lunch. Cheese in Europe is so much better than in the States.

We also stopped by a spur of the moment castle on our drive back to the hotel at Ross Castle, and it was such a special surprise. It was completely rebuilt to an original state, and it was beautiful!

After that tour, we had dinner at Murphy’s Bar in Killarney. This was our favorite dinner during the trip! Definitely stop by if you’re in the area. We actually wished we had skipped on Dingle and spent more time in this town. We didn’t get to spend any time walking around to the different shops.

Then we moved to the Inn at Dromoland and stayed there. It was really pretty inside! Up next was our favorite part of the trip; we went to Bunratty Castle which is a huge village and castle with so much to do! We wished we had gone earlier in the day. You could easily spend 5 hours at this stop. They have a medieval dinner option in the castle, and we weren’t originally going to, but we changed our mind last minute and went. It was SO MUCH FUN! We ate with our hands, they had live music, and it was such a unique experience. Definitely worth the money.

The next day we drove of to the Cliff’s of Moher which is one of the most iconic spots to see in Ireland. The only day we had to go was during a huge storm with strong wind warnings. It was the most powerful wind I’ve ever felt! Despite that, it was absolutely beautiful, and I highly recommend it. We couldn’t even get a good photo because the wind was so painful. This might be my favorite family photo of the trip though. 😂

The waitress at Jack’s at Pilgrims Rest told us that if we were up at the Cliffs of Moher, we needed to make the trip to Burren Perfumery so we did! This was my second favorite spot on the trip. They have flower gardens you can stroll through, a place where you can make your own perfume, and a shop where you can buy perfume from them. I bought their Winter Woods scent and LOVE it!

We drove up to Aillwee Caves after the perfumery! It was a quick cave tour, nothing that unique since we have cave tours that are bigger in upstate NY, but the drive there was absolute stunning!

The next day (Sunday), we drove to Elevate Community Church in the morning on our way back to the final day in Dublin. Everyone was so kind, the music was great, and we really enjoyed the preaching, too.

Once we got back to Dublin, we went to EPIC the Irish Immigration Museum. The kids didn’t love it to be honest, but it was good to learn about the history in Ireland.

Then we walked to the oldest pub in Ireland, The Brazen Head for an early dinner. My airport friend told me only to go during off times or we’d never get in so we went to dinner at 3pm, and it was still full. Thankfully, we were seated right away, there was security outside, and the place was hopping with Irish music. People were smoking inside which I didn’t expect, but it was such a cool experience. So glad we did it!

Then we walked from there to the Guinness Store house! I was unsure if I wanted to bring teens to a beer factory, but most people that we asked who were from the area said it was their favorite thing to do in Dublin so we tried it. Once again, so glad we did! It was such a beautiful factory, they had a Celtic concert we were able to go to with dancers and a band. If you go to the top of the building you can see the whole city of Dublin and there was even a rainbow over the whole city! What a perfect way to end out trip! Then we took a carriage ride back to our car.

Many people ask if we’d go back. Maybe one day, but I felt like we saw so much and really have a good feel for the country. We’ll probably try somewhere new next time! I highly recommend going though! It was as peaceful, beautiful country with friendly people everywhere!

Magnolia Castle Tour Highlights

Hi Friends!

I hope you all had a great weekend!

A couple of weeks ago (as some of you know), I spent a few days down in Waco visiting one of my favorite spots – Magnolia and the Silos. During my trip, I ventured to the Magnolia Castle with my mom and girlfriends and discovered firsthand why this place is so special! The castle was my favorite part of our Waco trip!

Although the castle first began to be built in 1890, it didn’t reach any sort of completion until 1913. From this time to 1977, the property and castle structure thrived and in 1977, under the guidance of its owner, the castle received historical designation. Unfortunately, during the 1990’s until 2019, the castle wasn’t well maintained, causing damage and the need for great repair. That’s when the heroes of our story (hint, that’s Chip and Joanna) stepped in and purchased the castle. And, of course, their main mission: to restore the castle to its intended glory! Although I had seen enough pictures, watched plenty of videos, and dreamed plenty of dreams to feel like I had been there already, I realized quickly that there was no way everything I viewed or dreamed could capture the magnificence of the castle and the experience it gives you!

One thing that left a big impression is that the design throughout is careful to maintain the integrity of the original structure, even its earliest iterations from 1890. While I love the style we now so quickly associate with the dynamic Gaines duo (who doesn’t love all things Magnolia?!), I appreciate that this project displays the value of keeping the history of the castle in tact, even down to the design elements and choices. Here are a few of my favorite photos that I took during our trip.

It was not surprising to find special moments around every corner, but as soon as I walked into the dining room I was just amazed! The level of detail is outstanding, and I LOVE its moody vibe! From the wallpaper selection to the painted black ceiling, guests at this table must feel completed enraptured by the deep colors and the dark atmosphere, exhibiting the perfect touch of ambiance.

Because the style of the castle is so very different from the many projects completed by Magnolia, during the process, Joanna Gaines developed a full line of paint colors to complete every room. Though encompassing a range of colors, including a family of white tones, this line is rich and full of deep tones, giving a beautiful nod to the history and story of this enchanting structure. Also, while we were there, we ate at a fabulous Italian restaurant nearby. Characterized by authentic Italian cuisine, Moroso more than delivered on service and taste! It is an ABSOLUTE MUST when visiting Waco! Best Place to Stay When Visiting Magnolia Market

Hi Friends!

How are you? I hope you’ve been checking out our Instagram and Facebook feed over the last week because I’ve shared some of my Magnolia Market trip. If not, follow along today. I’ll be sharing more throughout the week. I’ve been to Texas many times to check out Joanna Gaines new designs, restaurants, and the other fun surrounding Waco. I believe this was my 7th trip, and I can tell you without a doubt, the best place I’ve stayed is at the Gathering Oaks Retreat Center. The 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom farmhouse that we stayed in is located right next to Chip and Jo’s farmhouse so we could see their farm animals roaming around. We dreamed that Chip and Jo would come up to the fence and say hi (it didn’t happen though – dang it).

I’m considering doing ladies Waco Trip for any FunCycled fan in early 2025 and renting out the whole retreat center!! We adored our stay in a farmhouse chic, full house with a view of Chip and Jo’s farm!! Check out some of the beautiful rooms in our stay at Gathering Oaks!

It was quiet, clean, styled so beautifully, and oh so fun!!! It’s a 20 minute drive from Waco, but I think it’s WELL WORTH IT to be Chip and Jo’s neighbor for a couple of days.

We, of course, visited Magnolia Home, Press, the Silo Bakery, and Magnolia Market.

I’ve been really excited to check out Ferny’s at Magnolia for the first time! Even though it had fewer plants than I pictured it having since it’s a plant store, it still had a really cute design.

Since my last visit, Jimmy Don opened a JDH Iron Designs store right across the street from Magnolia Home! Jimmy was so kind! He remembered me and came right over for a big hug, met my friends, and signed every piece that we bought from him!
