2. Countertops Counters are the workhorse of the room. Investing in a durable, stunning stone or quartz is the fastest way to modernize your space. Because they occupy a primary horizontal plane, they catch the most light and the most eyes.

While we see this as an important investment in your kitchen design, we also know you don’t have the blow your whole budget on high-end counters. We strongly recommend quartz (manmade to look like stone) and quartzite or leathered granite counters, both of which are natural materials. There are so many options and often can mimic the high end look of marble and soapstone which are both more costly and harder to maintain.

Take a look at your kitchen. Is it functional, but lacks energy? Does it feel heavy, even though it has an open layout? That is exactly where our clients were when they approached us about updating their space.

The original kitchen had high-end bones, including an incredible Wolf range and beautiful natural oak floors, but the dark espresso cabinets, busy brown granite, and beige square backsplash were trapping the light. The room felt weighed down and dated.

Our goal wasn’t to rip everything out and start from scratch. Instead, we approached this project through the lens of strategic interior design: reimagining the surfaces, playing with contrast, and bringing in a softer palette to lighten the room.

The Design Challenge: From Heavy and Dark to Light and Airy

The “before” kitchen was a classic example of early-2000s design trends. While the dark wood cabinets were high quality, they absorbed almost all the ambient light from the surrounding living spaces. Paired with a heavy, multi-toned granite, the perimeter of the room felt visually crowded.

Our client wanted a kitchen that felt breezy, modern, and sophisticated. They needed a space that felt custom and intentional, not cookie-cutter. By keeping the existing layout and the premium appliances, they were able to focus the budget entirely on high-impact design elements: color, textures, and finishes.

Why Blue Cabinets with White Counters Are the Perfect Match

If you are looking to step away from the traditional all-white kitchen without committing to a dark, moody palette, blue cabinets with white counters are the ultimate design solution. This combination strikes a perfect balance, offering a distinct personality while remaining entirely timeless.

Selecting the Perfect Shade of Muted Blue

We moved away from stark whites or deep navies and instead opted for a sophisticated, dusty blue-gray for the cabinet painting. This specific shade acts as a colorful neutral. It brings a calm, coastal-meets-modern energy to the space, instantly making the cabinetry feel lighter and more architectural.

These cabinets were painted in Santorini Blue by Benjamin Moore. This color is so soft but still offers a certain depth and richness.

Anchoring the Space with a White Quartz Waterfall Edge

To complement the new cabinetry color, the client paired the look with simple, clean white quartz countertops. But the real showstopper here is the waterfall edge on the peninsula. By wrapping the quartz seamlessly down the side of the cabinetry, it anchors the room, creates a clean sightline from the living areas, and acts as a massive reflector for natural light.

The Finishing Touches: Hardware and a Statement Backsplash

In interior design, the major surfaces lay the foundation, but the details tell the story. To tie the blue cabinetry and white quartz together, we curated elements that added height and warmth.

Drawing the Eye Up with a Vertical Picket Tile

Instead of standard subway tile, we selected a stunning, elongated picket tile for the statement backsplash. By installing these tiles vertically rather than horizontally, we created a subtle visual trick that draws the eye upward, making the kitchen ceilings feel significantly taller.

The soft variation in the tile tones bridges the gap between the crisp white counters and the blue cabinets.

Adding the “Jewelry” with Modern Gold Hardware

To prevent the blue and white palette from feeling too cool or clinical, we introduced elongated, satin gold cabinet pulls with a textured grip. The gold tones bring an immediate sense of luxury, and more importantly, they beautifully mirror the warmth of the original hardwood floors, tying the entire room together.

Because home is where peace begins.

They say, “all roads lead to Rome,” but I didn’t realize mine would take a surprising detour through Ireland before I ever saw a single cobblestone of the streets of Rome. On our flight to Rome, we were hours into our flight when a medical emergency happened and a guy passed out on John and into the aisle. I was getting ready to do CPR when the flight attended stepped in and found that he had a pulse. Then a couple more hours later, another passenger had what seemed like a psychotic episode, that included (but was not limited to) yelling non stop for someone to restrain her, taking photos of other passengers and their children to let them know that they are in danger, pouring water on herself and others, and scratching the poor flight attendants. The pilot announced the emergency on board and asked for all law enforcement passengers to come to the back of the plane. They had to strap her down to the seat to restrain her, We were then detoured to Ireland so they could get help. I mean, I love Ireland, but that was certainly not in our planning! Anyway… a rocky start to our trip, but, I promise, there are much happier stories to come!

Where We Stayed: Grand Hotel Fleming

After being up all night on the flight, we landed and checked in at our firs hotel, The Grand Hotel Fleming. While the building is impressive and we enjoyed the breakfast there (yummy!), I’m not sure I would pick it again because of it’s location.

The hotel was further away from the downtown area than we anticipated, about a 25–30 minute drive. If you do choose to stay here to be away from the hustle and bustle, plan to rent a car and be prepared to pay for parking. And remember: you may need cash (Euros) for parking. Surprisingly, certain credit cards are not widely accepted in many parking areas (Discover)!

Day 1: The Colosseum & A Vespa Adventure

Our first stop was the Colosseum. This tour came to us in an unusual way. We missed our original slot due to the flight delay (Dublin emergency stop).

While walking down the large staircase from our parking spot to the base of the Colosseum, we connected with a local who was selling tickets on the side, offering “expedient entrance.” The risk-taker in me took over! After a fairly sketchy walk down what appeared to be a back alley and past a jail (fun fact: this was likely the famous Mamertine Prison where St. Peter was held!), we had tickets in our name and a tour guide. Because of that we got to skip the line, and get a small group tour with a guide It was the one thing my whole family agreed was a “must-see” before we went on this trip so I’m glad we took the risk; it was beyond amazing.

Palatine Hill

Near the Colosseum is Palatine Hill, the centermost of Rome’s major hills and the birthplace of the city itself. The ruins there point to a deep history, showing off both imperial grandeur and the far-reaching strength of ancient Rome.

Vespa Tour: A Must-Do!

After taking in the beauty of the hillside, we took a tour of the city by Vespa. I absolutely loved this! The adventurer in me was so excited to have the rush of open air, zipping alongside my family in traffic while catching the sights. This was probably my favorite part of the whole trip!

This excursion includes professional photos of you, iconic sights of the city, and special hidden moments that only a local guide can point out and capture for you! Well worth it! Here are some of the fun memories we collected:

Day 2: The Vatican & The Underground City

The Catacombs

Day two was another packed day, just the way the Trop family likes it! We began by touring the Catacombs, the ancient underground burial grounds dating from the 2nd to 5th centuries. Walking these tunnels was powerful; the walls are silent testaments to early Christian saints. You can even see some of the oldest renderings of Jesus and the apostles etched on the ceilings. I strongly recommend you see this; you will be inspired!

The Vatican

Next was a private tour of the Vatican. It was phenomenal, thanks to our guide, Barbara. Her father worked as a paralegal inside the Vatican, so her accounts offered a truly authentic, personal vantage point. We absolutely LOVED this!

Before you go, here a couple of important tips to keep in mind as you plan:

• Dress Code: Modesty is key. Shoulders and knees must be covered.

• Security: It’s a busy place; keep your passport and wallet close to your person at all times!

Winding Down

We concluded our day with a lovely dinner and wind down at Arlu, a beautiful restaurant with delicious cuisine, equally delightful in its flavor and presentation!

It was the perfect conclusion before heading to bed. We needed the rest to get ready for the next leg of our trip: Tuscany. But that is a story for another day. Stay tuned!

While Rome was a dream, navigating Italy as a family came with a bit of a learning curve. To wrap up our first leg of the trip, I’ve put together a cheat sheet of ‘Italy Essentials.’ Valuable tips and tricks we picked up during our trip and really apply to every city we visited in Italy. Here you go!

Quick Tips for Your Italy Trip

• Bring Cash (Euros): You’ll need it for tolls and parking! Many places we visited did not accept cards.
• European Adapters: Don’t forget a charger compatible with European standards.
• Passport Safety: Keep a photocopy of your passport at home or in your email as a backup.
• Language: Have Google Translate ready; many locals do not speak English.
• Breakfast & Coffee: Breakfast is light in Italy (usually just pastries). Look at the restaurants ahead of time to see when they will be open. Many aren’t open for dinner until 7pm so you may be hungry if you’re used to eating dinner before then.
• The Pizza Rule: Interestingly, I don’t recommend the pizza! Many places add toppings after the crust is baked, leaving you with cold toppings on a warm crust. Proceed with caution! 🤮

Your bedroom should be more than just a place to sleep. It should be a curated sanctuary that reflects your personality. We recently wrapped up a full-service modern farmhouse bedroom makeover, taking a blank-slate space and transforming it into a high-contrast retreat. By managing every detail from the initial design board to the final styling, we were able to blend bold architectural features like a black shiplap wall with the organic warmth of exposed wood beams. Peek inside the transformation to see how we used purposeful texture and a sophisticated color palette to bring this client’s vision to life.

The Scope: A Start-to-Finish Design Journey

This project was a true collaborative journey. It began with a design consultation to understand how our clients wanted the space to feel, not just look. Once the vision was set, we moved into the creation of a custom design board and sourced product recommendations.

As a full-service project, we didn’t just hand over a shopping list; we provided comprehensive project management. From the first coat of paint to the final installation of the curtain rods and artwork, we were on-site to ensure every element was executed to our high standards. NOTE, sometimes during the process, products seen on a design board may be slightly adjusted based on availability and any minor tweaks needed to best execute the design plan!

The Focal Point: Mastering the Black Shiplap Accent Wall

To anchor the room, we decided to go bold. We installed a horizontal shiplap feature wall and drenched it in a deep, velvety black. While a dark wall can feel intimidating, here it acts as a sophisticated backdrop that makes the existing wood headboard and crisp white linens truly sing. It adds an architectural “weight” to the room that was missing before, instantly elevating the entire aesthetic from standard to custom.

Adding Warmth: Elevating the Space with Wood Beams and Muted Tones

Balance is key in modern farmhouse design. To keep the black shiplap from feeling too heavy, we highlighted the stunning vaulted ceiling with rich wood beams.

We also gave a piece of existing furniture a new lease on life by painting the dresser in a beautiful, muted terracotta.

This earthy pop of color, paired with the rust and slate tones in the throw pillows, creates a bridge between the dark accent wall and the natural wood elements, ensuring the room feels cozy and lived-in.

Purposeful Texture: Layering Curtains, Linens, and Decor

Texture is the secret ingredient that makes a room feel “finished.” We traded the bare windows for floor-to-ceiling patterned curtains that add softness and height.

On the bed, we layered a striped duvet with subtle, ivory euro pillows and decorative throw pillows in muted tones to create a tactile experience.

We also carried this theme into the accessories, using woven baskets and beaded decor items to add organic variety. Every piece was chosen with purpose—to add comfort without creating clutter.

Scale and Light: Sourcing Statement Lighting and Intentional Artwork

Proper scale can make or break a room’s design. We replaced the standard recessed lighting with a large-scale wagon wheel chandelier that fills the vertical space of the vaulted ceiling.

Beside the bed, we installed modern industrial sconces to free up space on the nightstands.

Finally, we swapped the scattered wall hangings for a curated trio of geometric art prints. By choosing larger, intentional pieces, we were able to accentuate the room’s height and create a sense of calm, professional symmetry.

When we first met our clients, Heather and Brian, we knew it would be such a wonderful experience working with them! They were truly excited about having a fresh take on their bathroom and really willing to trust the process of design.

In reviewing their bathroom with them, we noted some key elements that needed change: 1) it was outdated; 2) the shower was way too small; 3) there was a lack of storage; and 4) the bathroom had absolutely no personality. After discussing some of the hopes and needs, we went to work on planning a stunning at-home spa experience for these well-deserving clients!

Given the details our clients shared with us, we leaned into a modern farmhouse aesthetic for the bathroom. Here’s the design board we created to envision a new retreat for our clients. The design feels grounded, clean, and just a little bit indulgent.

The Bold Move: Swapping the Tub for a Luxury Walk-In

The centerpiece of this renovation is the massive walk-in shower. We said goodbye to the barely used tub area and cramped shower and hello to a custom tiled sanctuary.

Here is the before of a cramped shower and not so very big tub. Both really not accommodating for this family.

And here is the transformation. Oversized shower with simple but thoughtfully designed storage cabinet.

• The Setup: We installed two overhead showerheads (because why fight for the warm water?) and a built-in bench seat for that true spa experience.

• The Vibe: The entire space is encased in a black paned shower enclosure. It provides that “industrial edge” that keeps the farmhouse look from feeling too “country.”

• The Execution: To really embody the luxury feel for this bathroom, we paired deep gray tiles with dark grout with the black shower fixtures – all within the stunning paned shower enclosure. Together, these really create an elevated and luxury feel.

Storage That Doesn’t Look Like… Storage

One of the biggest pain points in any bathroom is clutter. We solved this with two strategic moves:

1. The Arched Cabinet: Tucked right next to the shower, this adds architectural interest while housing fresh towels and a few “just for looks” decor pieces.

2. The Hidden Gems: We swapped standard mirrors for round medicine cabinet mirrors. You get the sleek, circular look that breaks up the sharp lines of the tile, plus a secret spot for your toothpaste and skincare.

Warmth Meets Industrial: The Vanity & Tile

To keep the black accents and deep grays from feeling too cold, we brought in a rustic wood double vanity. The soft brown tones provide that “organic” feel that is essential to a modern farmhouse.

We also took the tile work up a notch, literally. We tiled the floor in a grounding gray with clean lines and then ran white subway tile halfway up the walls on three sides of the bathroom. It’s a classic design trick that protects your walls and makes the room feel significantly more expensive than it actually was.

When working with a palette of black, warm white, and deep gray, texture is your best friend. The wood grain in the vanity is what makes this room feel like a home rather than a hotel.

Let’s be honest, walking into a Pottery Barn feels like stepping into a sanctuary of peace and one that is pretty elevated. Everything smells like driftwood, and the beds look like literal clouds. But when you see a $400 (or more) price tag on a duvet cover, that “calm” feeling can turn into a “is this for real?” feeling pretty quickly.

As someone who has spent way too many hours analyzing thread counts and fabric weights, I’m here to tell you: not everything at PB is worth the investment. But the other hand is, some things are. After all, bedding is an investment and should be something evaluated with clarity.

Today, we’re breaking down the PB icons. Here is what is worth your hard-earned money and where you can save your cash by shopping someplace else instead. Let’s dive in!

The “Worth the Splurge” Hall of Fame

1. Belgian Flax Linen Collection

If Pottery Barn had a “Greatest Hits” album, this would be track one. Here are my top picks for this collection:

• The Verdict: SPLURGE.
• The Caveat: Now, if you’ve been around here for a while, you know we previously recommended a budget-friendly linen dupe on our 10+ Pottery Barn Look-Alikes I’d Buy Instead blog post. We still stand by that for the price! But if you’re ready to graduate to the “forever” version, here is why the PB version earns its higher price tag.
• Why it’s the upgrade: Most budget linen feels a bit thin and can be scratchy out of the box. PB’s linen is pre-washed for a “buttery” feel that usually takes years of washing to achieve with cheaper brands. More importantly, it’s oversized. If you’ve ever spent a rainy afternoon binge-watching Gilmore Girls and wishing you could trade your morning commute for a seat at Luke’s Diner, I have a secret for you: Stars Hollow isn’t just a set on a Hollywood backlot, it’s a feeling you can actually find if you know where to drive. Thanks to my sis-in-law who took the lead on planning the ultimate girls’ getaway through the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut, me and my favorite gals had a chance to step into the very towns that inspired Amy Sherman-Palladino to create the world of Lorelai and Rory. From the iconic town greens and cozy “Chilton-esque” prep schools to the local bookshops where you can practically hear the “la-la-las” in the wind, we spent our days chasing that slow, storybook pace that makes you want to stay forever. So, grab your oversized coffee mug and travel with me through Washington Depot, New Milford, and Kent to find the real-life magic of the Gilmore world.

Gilmore Girls Must: Washington Depot & The “Chilton” Aesthetic

Our travels took us to Washington Depot, the town often cited as the primary inspiration for the show. There’s an undeniable sense of community here. It’s the kind where everyone seems to know their neighbor’s name and their favorite coffee order. I see how it would inspire such an iconic dynamic for the beloved characters of the show! Here are a few places to note when in Washington Depot:

Bookstore Bliss at Hickory Stick Bookshop: Rory would have lived here. It’s cozy, packed with character, and the perfect place to pick up a souvenir read. We also loved Shop Five Janes for unique finds and gift inspiration and the food market that feels like it came right out of the show.

Chilton Vibes at The Frederick Gunn School: For a true fan, seeing the architecture of The Frederick Gunn School is a must. It captures that prestigious, “steeped-in-tradition” Chilton energy perfectly.

Afternoon in New Milford: The Iconic Green

Next, we headed to New Milford, and let me tell you, the moment you see the Town Green, you’ll feel like you’re standing in the middle of a film set.

The centerpiece is the gazebo, which is a non-negotiable photo op for any fan.

After we got our pictures, we spent the afternoon meandering through the local boutiques. My absolute favorite was The Hunt. Their curation is incredible. Our girls, of course, had to pose with the iconic duo, too!

Where to Stay & Unwind: The Litchfield Inn

If you want a stay that feels boutique, elegant, and “Emily Gilmore approved,” The Litchfield Inn is it. It’s the perfect home base for a girls’ trip because it feels like a true escape from the hustle and bustle. I love the blend of history & charm with comfort & elegance all in one beautiful place!

While away, we were sure to get a little pampering of our own with a pedicure at The Spa at Litchfield Hills. It was the perfect way to reset before our second day of exploring.

We also loved grabbing a morning latte and nibble for lunch at Toast & Company, which I highly recommend for anyone looking for fresh, delicious comfort food.

Final Destination: Kent & “Miss Patty’s” Barns

Before heading home, make your way to Kent, another stunning town that adds to the tapestry of the Litchfield Hills.

• Kent Barns gives major “Miss Patty’s” vibes. The rustic-yet-refined aesthetic of the barns and shops is the perfect conclusion to a Gilmore-themed weekend.
• The Scenic Route: If you’re heading back toward Ghent or the surrounding areas, do yourself a favor and stop by Bartlett House on your way out. Taking the scenic way back to Washington Depot only adds about 10 minutes to your drive, but it takes you through some of the most beautiful, “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” towns in Connecticut.

Final Thoughts: A Trip for the Soul

• The Elevation: We love Glass Pendants with Real Brass Accents or Rattan Sconces.

• The Wit: Brass and glass are timeless and will work in so many design styles. Natural materials ground the room and feel much more expensive than they are.

4. The Finishing Touches: Paint & Air Quality

Finally, let’s talk about what you can’t see: the air.

• Low-VOC Paint: We use this in several FunCycled projects. It means you can sleep in your room the same night you paint it without a headache.
• Air Purifiers: Adding real plants or a high-quality purifier is the final step in a truly “green” design. We especially love this option from BlueAir.

We also think a cute button fern adds the perfect gentle touch of green indoors. Love this option. It is super inexpensive and add a purifying component to any room.

Final Thoughts

Designing sustainably doesn’t mean your house has to look like a literal forest (I mean I guess that could be a vibe-lol!). It means choosing items that are better for your family and the planet.
