Spoiler: The private island was a dream, the chocolate tour…not so much!

As a family who works hard so we can play hard, we booked an MSC cruise departing from New York City, hoping it would be a restful, fun, and adventurous getaway in the middle of a Northeast winter. Let’s just say parts of it lived up to the dream. Other parts? Well, they left us underwhelmed.

This post is a mix of our honest reflections, helpful travel tips, and the kind of review we wish we’d read before booking. If you’re a family who loves good design, meaningful travel, and a little more peace than party, read on.

Leaving NYC in Winter: Beautiful, But Cold & Cramped

We left out of NYC in January. This sounds romantic in theory, but the frigid temps meant all the outdoor decks and amenities were basically unusable for the first couple days. That left everyone crammed into indoor common areas that weren’t quite designed for that level of traffic.

If you’re someone who recharges through quiet or spacious environments, the first few days may feel overwhelming.

The Room: Tiny & Windowless

Yes, we knew cruise cabins would be small, but not having a window made it feel a bit like being in a prison. Josh enjoyed the cruise more than the rest of us (we love that for him!), but truthfully, it felt claustrophobic for the rest of us.

Although we had small accommodations, we were happy to at least have some interesting “backdrops” for photos throughout the cruise ship.

I wouldn’t say the interior of the ship was exactly my “style,” but the sheer size of it (along with the level of detail) certainly made it impressive.

Sea Days vs. Port Days: 4 at Sea, 3 on Land Felt Off-Balance

Here’s the breakdown of our week:

• Port Canaveral, FL – We visited the Kennedy Space Center, which was exciting but expensive and rushed. What should have been a $20 Uber became $90 one way because all 3,000+ people are getting off at the same time. We only had about 3 hours to explore, so we couldn’t do the full launchpad tour.

• MSC’s Private Island – This was our favorite day. It was beautiful, clean, and not overcrowded (a nice surprise). Unfortunately, it was windy and chilly (low 70s), so all outdoor activities like kayaking and paddleboarding were canceled. Still worth it for the view alone.

• Nassau, Bahamas – We visited the historic Queen’s Staircase, which was gorgeous, and then went to the Graycliff Chocolatier. The tour was underwhelming, especially at a price tag of $350+ for four people. Even though everything was walkable from the port, we’d 100% recommend skipping the organized excursion and going on your own instead.

Plus, I loved having an opportunity to walk around and take in some of the beauty of the local area. The colors were absolutely perfect against the tropical surroundings!

Activity Options: Karaoke, Origami & Not Much More

Most of the onboard activities skewed toward karaoke, trivia, origami, or casino-style entertainment. The shows were okay (some nights were better than others), but overall they were not on par with other cruise lines. Put simply, if you’re not into alcohol, gambling, or group dancing… things got old fast.

Final Days: A Bit Better, But Still Not “Us”

Our last two days at sea were smoother. The shows improved, we found little ways to make it work (hello, card games and people-watching), but we still couldn’t shake the feeling that seven days, with only three on land, wasn’t the right ratio for our kind of vacation.

One thing we always appreciate no matter where we go or what is “on our schedule” is a chance to try new foods and enjoy good cuisine. We definitely had some yummy options on the cruise, and I would say that the food was one of the BEST parts of our trip. If you’re a real foodie, maybe that would make all the rough parts of this cruise, completely worth it!

What We’d Do Differently (AKA: What You Should Know)

Overall, I would say this was just NOT the trip for us. I am glad we had the experience because it has given me an opportunity to share ways we would proceed differently. Here are my tips for making sure your cruise experience is a great one:

1. Only Cruise from Warm Locations

Embarking from NYC in winter meant two full days before hitting real warmth. If we cruise again, we’d fly to a warmer port first.

2. Splurge on a Balcony Room

Natural light changes everything. If your budget allows, a room with a balcony or even just a window makes a big difference.

3. Bring Entertainment

Games, books, puzzles, or even watercolor kits go a long way on sea days, especially if you’re not into the scheduled activities.

4. Get the Full Wi-Fi Package

The MSC messaging app sometimes didn’t work. Get the full Wi-Fi so you can stay in touch and make plans on board.

5. Don’t Rush Off the Ship

Disembarkation was chaotic. I am talking, like Black Friday meets airport security. Wait it out in your cabin if you can or get up early to be first in line. Trust us.

6. DIY Your Excursions

In Nassau and Port Canaveral, you’ll save a ton by skipping organized excursions. Book your ride ahead so you aren’t wasting a ton of time waiting for an uber or other transport. Research ahead and go at your own pace.

Final Thoughts: Cruising Isn’t for Everyone, and That’s OK

We love intentional living. We love beauty, creativity, and rest. This cruise, while filled with little bright spots and one amazing island day, just didn’t check the boxes for us.

That said, if you’re someone who thrives on constant activity, casino nights, and karaoke, this might be your dream trip. But if you’re like us and crave peaceful adventure, thoughtful design, and immersive cultural experiences, we’d recommend something more like…

•  Cruising fewer days at sea
•  Choosing warmer departure cities
•  Or opting for a different kind of vacation altogether

Beyond its natural beauty, solid wood is the “gold standard” of furniture for three reasons: longevity, repairability, and value. Unlike mass-produced “engineered wood,” which often ends up in a landfill, solid wood is a living material that can be sanded down, refinished, and repaired indefinitely. The 5-Point “Solid Wood” Checklist

Before we cover which companies are using solid wood, here is a quick checklist that will help you before you buy:

1. The Grain “Wrap”: Look at the edges. Does the wood grain on the top surface continue around the edge and into the “end grain”? If there is a sharp seam or the pattern changes abruptly, it’s a veneer.
2. The “Repeat” Scan: Nature never repeats itself. Scan the surface for identical knots or swirls. If you see two identical patterns 12 inches apart, it’s a printed laminate.
3. The Underside Audit: Manufacturers rarely waste expensive veneer on parts you can’t see. Look under the table or behind the dresser. If the bottom looks like rough, unfinished wood, it’s solid. If it looks like smooth, gray “sawdust” board (MDF), keep moving.
4. Inspect the Joinery: Pull out a drawer. Dovetail joints (interlocking teeth) are a hallmark of solid wood. If you see staples, glue, or plastic brackets, it’s likely a composite material.

The “Big Box” Filter (Amazon, Wayfair, Birch Lane)

You can find solid wood here, but you must read the “Technical Specifications” carefully.

• Wayfair/Birch Lane: Use the “Material” filter and select “Solid Wood.” Look for brands like Grain Wood Furniture (Solid Pine) or International Furniture Direct (Solid Mango/Pine).
• Amazon: Search for Simpli Home. They focus on plantation-grown solid wood and are the most reliable “budget” solid wood option on the platform. Please note, some products are also made with a combo of engineered wood and pine.

Pine is not a hard wood. It is a softer wood and will scratch and dent more easily. Pine, however, is typically more affordable.

I love the options from International Furniture Direct. This company offers a more unique and artisan look (similar to what you would find with high end makers but at a lower price point. Here are two favorites from them:

Clearing the “Heritage Brand” Confusion

Brands like Pottery Barn, West Elm, and Crate & Barrel occupy a tricky middle ground. They use what I might call a “hybrid model.”

• Pottery Barn: Some of their long standing collections may offer pieces of full solid wood, but their “trend” pieces are often veneers.
• West Elm: Their “Mid-Century” aesthetic often requires veneers to keep the thin legs stable. For solid wood, the Anton collection offers a number of pieces, and even some of their “one-off” pieces like the Meyer drink tables are as well.

Always check the details section for these companies. If you see “engineered wood” or “MDF,” it is not a solid wood piece.

It may seem like an odd thing to even include, but buying solid wood isn’t for everyone. Beyond tight budgets, here aer some reasons buying solid wood may not be for you. Do not buy it if:

• You live in a home with extreme humidity swings (wood can warp or crack).
• You want a “perfect,” sterile look without natural knots or color variations.
• You move frequently; solid hardwood is extremely heavy.

Fostering peace and healing in your home starts with understanding how the spaces around you affect your mind and body. Perhaps you have walked into a room and felt an almost instantaneous sense of calm? Or, maybe to the contrary, you have felt a tension you couldn’t quite explain? Studies show that spaces filled with natural light, soothing colors, and organic textures can lower stress hormones, improve focus, and even restore cognitive function. Beautiful spaces, as it turns out, are more than just well designed interiors created to look pretty, they can actually help us heal.

This is the heart of trauma-informed design. According to the Trauma-Informed Design Society, it’s “an approach to creating physical spaces that integrate principles of trauma-informed care (safety, trust, choice, empowerment, and community) into design decisions, with the goal of promoting well-being, dignity, and healing.” Simply put, trauma-informed design recognizes that spaces can either trigger stress and fear or foster safety, calm, and restoration.

In practical terms, this means the design choices we make, from lighting and layout to materials and colors, can influence our nervous system, help regulate emotions, and create environments where people feel truly seen and supported. Whether it’s a home, a workplace, or a community space, trauma-informed design is about more than aesthetics; it’s about creating a sanctuary for the mind and soul.

What Is Trauma-Informed Design?

At its core, trauma-informed design is about creating spaces that acknowledge how past experiences affect how we interact with our environment. It emphasizes safety, emotional regulation, and dignity. While the concept originated in healthcare and social service settings, it’s increasingly being applied to homes, workplaces, and community spaces.

Your home is more than a backdrop for daily life; it’s a place that can actively support your mental and emotional well-being. Neuroscience shows that spaces filled with order, natural light, and soothing textures help calm the amygdala, which is the part of the brain that detects threats. Plus, carefully designed homes with these principles in mind can reduce cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone. Conversely, cluttered or overstimulating environments can leave your nervous system on high alert, making it harder to relax, focus, or sleep.

Why Your Home Environment Matters

The way we design our spaces directly impacts how we feel. Studies show that open layouts, soft lighting, and natural materials activate the parasympathetic nervous system, responsible for rest and repair, signaling safety to the brain and lowering anxiety.

• Lighting: Soft, warm lighting helps your body wind down, supports circadian rhythms, and can even boost serotonin levels for improved mood.

   Spaces should feel predictable and approachable. Clear sightlines, uncluttered surfaces, and thoughtful layouts help create a sense of safety.
2. Choice & Control
   Offer flexibility where possible. Incorporate adjustable lighting, seating options, or spaces that allow privacy. Having control over one’s environment fosters empowerment.
3. Connection & Belonging
   Design spaces that encourage community and togetherness. Communal areas and intentional furniture arrangement help people feel included and supported.
4. Calm & Emotional Regulation
   Soft textures, muted or natural color palettes, and biophilic elements can help the nervous system regulate and support emotional balance.

Bringing Nature Indoors: Biophilic Design

Biophilic design is a natural complement to trauma-informed principles. It incorporates elements of nature (light, plants, organic shapes, water, and earth-inspired colors) into our everyday spaces.

Research shows that even brief exposure to natural elements can:

• Lower blood pressure and heart rate
• Reduce anxiety and depression
• Improve focus, memory, and cognitive function

The foundation of Biophilic Design strives to connect people with nature. From a design perspective, these principles translate to small but intentional decisions: warm wood tones, furniture with soft edges or curved design for comfort, and open shelving to create breathing room. These are all strategies I applied in my Schenectady Airbnb project and have shared some pictures below.

By pulling the sofa away from the windows and then framing them in soft drapery, the space is focused on the outside and natural light while still creating a softness within the room.

Light and openness are key to this kitchen dining area. The spaces stays grounded and anchored with the natural wood table but maintains a clean flow and brightness by keeping the windows mostly exposed.

Small, Practical Ways to Foster Peace at Home

Cultivating peace inside the home is actually an important goal for everyone, no matter the journey you have been on. And what’s great is that you don’t need a full renovation to achieve this or begin incorporating the principles of trauma informed design into your home. Simple changes can have a significant impact:

• Declutter and organize to reduce visual stress.
• Layer your lighting: combine ambient, task, and accent lighting.
• Introduce nature: add plants, natural textures, or water elements.
• Use calming colors and textures: soft neutrals and cool blues and greens, warm woods, and gentle fabrics and patterns.
• Create intentional corners: a reading nook, meditation space, or cozy chair for reflection.

Even small interventions help your home become a sanctuary where you and your loved ones can feel grounded and supported. This kitchen is a great example of how using soft and soothing colors in a strategic way that allows the space to feel calm. Plus the open shelving and soft lighting support a relaxed environment.

Creating a Sanctuary for Mind and Soul

A trauma-informed home is emotionally generous. It becomes a quiet companion, offering clarity, rest, and comfort amid the chaos of daily life. By thoughtfully incorporating light, color, layout, and natural elements, you can foster peace and healing for yourself and anyone who enters your home.

As I like to remind readers: even small adjustments can ripple into a profound sense of calm. Begin by noticing how your spaces make you feel, then make intentional changes to invite serenity, restoration, and joy into your everyday life.

Creating character, increasing the value to your home, and creating a personalized space are often goals for homeowners. So we were able to remedy this by adding board and batten between the trim and baseboard and found coordinating square tile backsplash to keep the

Harmonious Bathroom Design

I love this bathroom design from our Trolley House Flip. The nature inspired wallpaper brings some elements of outside into the space. By adding the wooden board and batten to the adjacent wall, it only serves to support the biophilic touches within this bathroom design.

Welcoming Atmosphere

Entering into your home should immediately set you and your guests at ease. This entryway I created (through AI tools to help depict design concepts for my clients ) is a great example of creating a strong welcome. The contrasting wall acts as a focal point for the practical components of the space.

Here’s the thing with board and batten, DIY is a great option for many people, but before biting off more than you can chew, I recommend doing a lot of research and assessing whether you really have the right skills to get the job done correctly. Adding board and batten will require the use of power tools and accurate measurements. I emphasize the the latter because this will require strong planning and meticulous execution. Plus, you will need to understand how to work with or reinstall your existing baseboard trim to achieve the right outcome. This may not be for the novice DIY’er.

You should plan to call a professional if you 1) don’t have any (or have very limited) experience with this type of work; 2) want to add a pattern that covers the whole wall and uses both horizontal and vertical battens; and 3) have other unique features or factors that need accommodation during the installation.
