Hi, friends!
I hope you had a beautiful and blessed Christmas!
One thing that we are faced with immediately after the holiday season is our need to organize, and my guess is that for many of us, organization is at the top of the New Year’s Resolution list! Well, I may not be able to help you get everything in order, but I can assist you with some tips for closet organization. For the purpose of this post, I am focusing on closets in bedrooms, but many of the principles and ideas are universal and cross over into ANY closet – bedroom, foyer, linen, or basement storage. Before we begin, remember to give yourself grace. Don’t try to tackle too many closets at one time. That will guarantee overload and frustration! Okay, let’s jump in!
Number 1 – Assess What you HAVE & What you NEED
This step is really important before you begin on implementing a new system. If you don’t have a clear handle on what your needs are, you will be aimlessly trying to reach an outcome that is not entirely defined.
Number 2 – Customized or Prefabricated
In addition to assessing what your needs are, you should also evaluate what approach will meet your needs best. Adding a custom built closet or installing a prefabricated option. Both will accomplish the goal of organization, but there are aspects to weigh as you make this decision. To guide this evaluation, I have bulleted some things to consider:
Custom Built Closet:
- Tailored to Your Needs
- Efficient Space Utilization
- High Quality & Longevity
- Customized Design & Enhanced Aesthetics
- Increased Property Value
- High ROI
Prefabricated Closet Kits:
- Lower Initial Cost
- DIY & Quick Installation
- Pre-Designed Organization Options
- Often Have Some Interchangeable Solutions
- Readily Available
Number 3 – Designing the Space

Closet Kits
Today, you can find so many varieties of closet kits, many of which have components that are somewhat customizable. But generally speaking, these kits are pre-fabricated and are specified sizes. Be sure to measure accurately when considering this option.
Hanging Items
Here are some “no bump” hangers designed to prevent that obnoxious shoulder bump that comes with so many varieties for shirts or blazers.
Shoe Storage
Within many closet systems, there will be shoe storage, but I know often times this may not be enough. To help solve this problem, you can employ a whole other unit, like the one on the left (make sure you account for that when you are planning) OR you can employ individual, stackable shoe boxes like these on the right. I like the individual clear bins solution because those bins are more versatile.
Decorative Storage Containers
here is where you get to have fun with patterns, textures, and make everything look pretty while keeping it functional. I like to suggest keeping things neutral and having a variety of boxes, bins, totes, and baskets on hand. Here are a few suggestions.
Overflow Storage Solutions
For bulkier items, you may want to consider solutions that can be kept tucked away but still visible to what is inside. This may be larger bins or under the bed storage. I have pulled some options together below:
