Late 1800’s Gray Vanity Makeover – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How are you? Did you have a fun Valentines Day? I posted this on our social media sites and I hope you know how true it is…
12671927_1071578282865082_7593833545649675234_oI wanted to remind those of you who struggle with Valentine’s Day because you don’t have a Valentine or because you don’t have the Valentine you pictured yourself with when you were a little kid. You are significant and so loved! God is all around you – loving you. Even when it doesn’t feel like it. God loves you so much he sent His Son to die on the cross for you.

For this week’s transformation, I wanted to show you a vanity that we just finished. The man we bought this vanity from said it’s been in his family for generations. He believes its from the late 1800’s. Here it is before:
IMG_0967We painted it using Benjamin Moore’s color Silver Fox. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. After we painted it, we lightly distressed and glazed it. We also found this adorable chair…
IMG_2234It was just the right height and the curves of the legs matched perfectly with this vanity.

Ready for the after?

  1. Hi, it was back in the mid 70s when I got interested in antique/old/vintage furniture. In the first batch of stuff that I brought home was a small chair exactly the same as yours. I’ve never seen another like it until you showed your picture. Mine has been used many times as an extra chair as it’s the same height as a kitchen chair.

The only thing is it’s very uncomfortable. The cross bar at the back hits at just the wrong place and the seat is very shallow so you always feel like you’re falling off. I was told at the time it’s called a “games chair”. Way back when, when people were playing cards they (whoever “they” are) deliberately made these chairs uncomfortable so people wouldn’t stay so long at the gaming tables and lose all their money. At the same time, the owner of the shop said it was over 100 years old. I remember I didn’t pay very much for it. Have no idea if either statement is true and have never been curious enough to do some research. It is a great conversation starter, though!

    Enjoy reading your blog,
    Cathy
