If you’ve ever spent a rainy afternoon binge-watching Gilmore Girls and wishing you could trade your morning commute for a seat at Luke’s Diner, I have a secret for you: Stars Hollow isn’t just a set on a Hollywood backlot, it’s a feeling you can actually find if you know where to drive. Thanks to my sis-in-law who took the lead on planning the ultimate girls’ getaway through the Litchfield Hills of Connecticut, me and my favorite gals had a chance to step into the very towns that inspired Amy Sherman-Palladino to create the world of Lorelai and Rory. From the iconic town greens and cozy “Chilton-esque” prep schools to the local bookshops where you can practically hear the “la-la-las” in the wind, we spent our days chasing that slow, storybook pace that makes you want to stay forever. So, grab your oversized coffee mug and travel with me through Washington Depot, New Milford, and Kent to find the real-life magic of the Gilmore world.

Gilmore Girls Must: Washington Depot & The “Chilton” Aesthetic

Our travels took us to Washington Depot, the town often cited as the primary inspiration for the show. There’s an undeniable sense of community here. It’s the kind where everyone seems to know their neighbor’s name and their favorite coffee order. I see how it would inspire such an iconic dynamic for the beloved characters of the show! Here are a few places to note when in Washington Depot:

Bookstore Bliss at Hickory Stick Bookshop: Rory would have lived here. It’s cozy, packed with character, and the perfect place to pick up a souvenir read. We also loved Shop Five Janes for unique finds and gift inspiration and the food market that feels like it came right out of the show.

Chilton Vibes at The Frederick Gunn School: For a true fan, seeing the architecture of The Frederick Gunn School is a must. It captures that prestigious, “steeped-in-tradition” Chilton energy perfectly.

Afternoon in New Milford: The Iconic Green

Next, we headed to New Milford, and let me tell you, the moment you see the Town Green, you’ll feel like you’re standing in the middle of a film set.

The centerpiece is the gazebo, which is a non-negotiable photo op for any fan.

After we got our pictures, we spent the afternoon meandering through the local boutiques. My absolute favorite was The Hunt. Their curation is incredible. Our girls, of course, had to pose with the iconic duo, too!

Where to Stay & Unwind: The Litchfield Inn

If you want a stay that feels boutique, elegant, and “Emily Gilmore approved,” The Litchfield Inn is it. It’s the perfect home base for a girls’ trip because it feels like a true escape from the hustle and bustle. I love the blend of history & charm with comfort & elegance all in one beautiful place!

While away, we were sure to get a little pampering of our own with a pedicure at The Spa at Litchfield Hills. It was the perfect way to reset before our second day of exploring.

We also loved grabbing a morning latte and nibble for lunch at Toast & Company, which I highly recommend for anyone looking for fresh, delicious comfort food.

Final Destination: Kent & “Miss Patty’s” Barns

Before heading home, make your way to Kent, another stunning town that adds to the tapestry of the Litchfield Hills.

• Kent Barns gives major “Miss Patty’s” vibes. The rustic-yet-refined aesthetic of the barns and shops is the perfect conclusion to a Gilmore-themed weekend.
• The Scenic Route: If you’re heading back toward Ghent or the surrounding areas, do yourself a favor and stop by Bartlett House on your way out. Taking the scenic way back to Washington Depot only adds about 10 minutes to your drive, but it takes you through some of the most beautiful, “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it” towns in Connecticut.

Final Thoughts: A Trip for the Soul

This trip wasn’t just about the locations; it was about the slow pace, the meaningful conversations, and the nostalgia of a show that feels like home. A huge thank you to my sis-in-law, Jessica, for planning this whole itinerary and letting me tag along for the ride!
