Earth Day is right around the corner (April 22nd, mark your calendars!), and while switching to glass straws is great, at FunCycled, we like to go bigger.
If you want to move the needle on your home’s health and environmental footprint, you have to be diligent and know what to look for. Ready to design with a conscience? Let’s dive into the essentials.
1. The Big Hitters: Sofas & Beds
These are some of the hardest pieces to source for quality and sustainability. Why? Because it is hard to know what to look for when you, particularly when both beds and sofas tend to be largely fabric – not necessarily something that is considered when seeking eco-friendly choices. I have done some work for you and have outlined my top picks in these categories.
The Choice: We’ve narrowed it down to two Sustainable Sofa Options and two eco-friendly bed options that pass the FunCycled test.
Sustainable Sofa Selection
Here are my top picks for sustainable sofas. Both of these sofas come from Sabai, company I have reviewed before. Sabai is known for its strong commitment to sustainability, with the materials they use and their “repair, don’t replace” philosophy.

Eco-Conscious Beds

Why buy this? You’re removing the “buying fear” of durability. These aren’t “disposable” items; they are the foundation of a room designed to last a decade, not a season.
2. The Layers: Non-Toxic Textiles
Next, we focus on what we touch. Your skin is your largest organ, so you shouldn’t spend 6-8 hours a day (the average number of hours in bed for rest) wrapped in synthetic chemicals.
- The Top Pick: Our 100% Linen Duvet Set. Linen is the ultimate sustainable material (natural, breathable, and chic-ly wrinkled).

- The Companion: Layer in a 100% Cotton Blanket. Look for organic labels to ensure no pesticides were invited to your nap.

3. Lighting: Honest Materials
Lighting is the jewelry of the home. Skip the plastic-heavy fixtures and look for “honest” materials. These are materials that are made from natural elements
- The Elevation: We love Glass Pendants with Real Brass Accents or Rattan Sconces.

- The Wit: Brass and glass are timeless and will work in so many design styles. Natural materials ground the room and feel much more expensive than they are.
4. The Finishing Touches: Paint & Air Quality
Finally, let’s talk about what you can’t see: the air.
- Low-VOC Paint: We use this in several FunCycled projects. It means you can sleep in your room the same night you paint it without a headache.
- Air Purifiers: Adding real plants or a high-quality purifier is the final step in a truly “green” design. We especially love this option from BlueAir.

We also think a cute button fern adds the perfect gentle touch of green indoors. Love this option. It is super inexpensive and add a purifying component to any room.

Final Thoughts
Designing sustainably doesn’t mean your house has to look like a literal forest (I mean I guess that could be a vibe-lol!). It means choosing items that are better for your family and the planet.
