Choosing a style you love is only half the battle—now comes the task of making sure your favorite stools actually fit your kitchen island seamlessly. To save you the headache of returns (and the frustration of bumped knees), we’ve compiled the answers to the most frequently asked questions about counter stool sizing, spacing, and materials. Read on to master the designer rules of scale before you click “add to cart.”
The single most common mistake people make when buying kitchen island seating online is choosing the wrong height. The difference comes entirely down to your kitchen’s surface measurements:
Counter-height stools have a seat height between 24 and 26 inches and are designed for a standard kitchen island and built-in counters which typically are at 35 to 37 inches high.
Bar-heigh stools have a seat height og 28 to 30 inches. They work best with bar and pub-style tables or custom islands that are taller, between 41 to 43 inches high.
Most islands will accommodate 3 stools but you really do need to measure to make a final determination. Here is my suggested general rule: allow for 24 to 28 inches of width for each “person” or in this case stool. So a standard 8 foot island will likely be able to have 3 stools, and depending upon the width and style of the stool, you might get a 4th one in.
Look for vegan leather with simple stitching or weaving. If you can afford, genuine leather is another great option. Both can easily wipe down. Fabrics such as boucle and performance blends are good because animals typically do not care for them and both often have a texture to them which can help mask minor stains. You can also consider scotch-guarding your fabric for a little reinforcement to stay clean.
The Pro Designer Rule: Always measure from the floor to the underside of your countertop before you order. To sit comfortably without banging your knees, you need 10 to 12 inches of open legroom clearance between the top of the stool’s cushion and the bottom of your counter.
