Making History Your Own – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends,

How are you? We are living in what feels like a bed and breakfast… our new 1805 dream house! We have been arms deep in paint and light demo. It’s been long days but we’ve been loving every minute of it. Here are some of the things we adore about it already…. the river stone fireplace.

The black wall and antique mantel we added to the dining room…

And last but not least is our little creek or as Harmony called it this week “the lake” in our back yard.

Our over 200 year old house has been reminding me of what I love most about what I do, taking something really old with a lot of history and making it new again, to love for years to come. I thought it would be fun to share this project.

Rebecca came to us with this trunk that her grandfather made with his own two hands. She wanted to make it something she could use every day so she could think of him BUT also love how it looked. She spared no expense to make it stunning.

20150307_134840

She asked me how I pictured it redone. I showed her exactly what I wanted to do with it and she was on board 100%. That made this project really fun for me!!

We painted the whole piece with Benjamin Moore’s silver fox color. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. After we painted it, we heavily distressed it and glazed it using Valspar’s Antiquing Glaze. Even with doing all that it still looked like a typical old trunk so we wanted to jazz it up a bit. We used antique caster wheels on the base. We also added corner brackets and a vintage style lock on the front. I don’t think I could be more in love with the after:

Vintage Teal Mirrored Dresser – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

It’s an exciting week! The highly anticipated week that we move into our new home is happening now!! I can’t even explain how excited we are! I honestly never thought we would own a house like this. All along the way, we’ve been so humbled by how God worked every detail out. From selling our house for exactly what we needed in two weeks and a day, to finding bedroom sets that are perfect for the house for $20 at a yard sale, to the exact mess sink that we needed for free along side the road last night. One thing after another has given us such peace that this is where God is moving us. We couldn’t have made it happen if we wanted to.
new houseWe are doing the prep work this week and I’ll be sharing some photos along the way soon. Follow us on Facebook or Instagram for fun photos as we make this house our home.

As for this week’s transformation… Here it is before:
IMG_1267

We bought this dresser at a barn sale to raise money for an orphanage. It definitely needed repair and love, but we gladly added those details! We painted this dresser using Valspar’s Vintage Teal color. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. After we painted it, we also glazed it using Valspar’s Antiquing Glaze.

We also bought the antique mirror from the Stormville Flea Market a couple of months ago. When we bought the dresser, I instantly thought the mirror would look perfect on top.

Here’s the after!

Updating Nursery Furniture Into A Rustic Bedroom Set – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How are you? We moved out of our house this weekend and oh my word, I don’t want to move ever again. We are living with my parents for a week while we wait to close on our new home. The thought of lugging boxes and furniture all over again, when we move into the new house this weekend leaves me feeling overwhelmed at best. Check out this REALLY SAFE way the guys decided to move my piano from the upstairs.
piano

Moving aside, I’m so very excited to get into the house and have fun designing. It’s going to be a 200 year old gem.

This week’s transformation is a fun one! Amy came to us because she had a lot of her son’s nursery furniture, that was well made. She wanted keep the sentimentality of the pieces but her son had definitely outgrown the nursery furniture. She also wanted to have the furniture redone in a way that could easily convert to a guest bedroom when he moves out.

Here are all the pieces before.
amy3 amy2 amy1 amy4We wanted it to have a rustic feel by incorporating barn board. Also, Amy wanted to turn the bookcase into a desk. That was the fun part! We painted all of the furniture black. For the headboard, we attached a board along the back to connect both ends of the crib. Then to give it a more mature look we added barn board on the centers of each section.
10-12-2015-shoot-6-mark_22110429632_oWe also painted the dresser black! If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.
10-12-2015-shoot-18-mark_22133107351_oThe bookcase was so much fun! We repositioned the shelves and John built the desk top and legs from the same barn board. It easily inserted inside and then we attached it to the shelf with a couple of screws from the underneath side.

A Gold Painted 1920’s Buffet – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends,

I hope you’re having a great day! This week we pack up and move out of our current house. I can’t believe how quickly all of this has happened. We weren’t even looking for a house! At the end of the summer we drove by a house that we would normally only dream about owning and saw that it was for sale. We checked if we could get financing, found out we could, went to take a look and fell in love with it. I can’t wait to show you all pictures of this house, our soon to be home,  I believe you’ll fall in love, too. It’s over 200 years old and full of charm.

Since I’m moving right smack dab in the middle of retail’s busiest time of year, I may be a little brief in my posts over the next few weeks. Stick with me, ok? I’ll be back with a vengeance, showing exciting transformations, with fun stories to tell too –  I promise. :)

Today’s makeover is such a unique transformation. Ellen has had us redo another furniture piece, and now came to us with this buffet that DEFINITELY needed help. It’s hard to tell from the picture but the whole top right side had bubbling and peeling veneer. It needed lots and lots of repair.
gold buffet before

Ellen has other gold accents in her house and loved the original gold detailing on this buffet. She also loved the transformation we did on the buffet of Mr. and Mrs. Sophisticated.
Mr. & Mrs. Sophisticated – Tuesday’s Treasures
I recommended that since the box was so damaged, we should repair and paint the box gold. Then we could repair the wood on the door fronts and keep all of the original gold detailing. She loved the idea and we got to work. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.

Gray Hutch Makeover – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

I hope you’re having a great week! Thanks so much to all of you who came out to our moving sale. It was great catching up with you. For those of you who don’t know what I’m talking about, we bought a new house and are moving just a few minutes away from where we live now. Our store will still be on River Street in Troy. Nothing is changing there, but we will have a much better work space at our new house and we are so looking forward to it.

We are currently enjoying the last overnight house guest in this house. Having our friends Caleb and Chrisie at our house is like reminiscing about the good old days. Days with late night laughing till your face hurts. Board games and candy canes and all that good stuff. Chrisie has walked through so many seasons of life with me and has been a constant support. Filled with faith and confidence in God, love for her family and laughter. I’m more than honored to spend a few days with her, her hubby and their 5 kiddos… 7 and under.

As for this week, I want to share a makeover we recently did as a custom order. Linda inherited much of her father’s furniture. She wanted to love them again while still keeping memories of her father so she asked us to breath new life into them. One of my favorite parts about my job is when I get to transform something that someone adores and help them keep a furniture piece with history in their home.

Here’s the hutch before… sorry it’s not a great picture!
hutch before2We painted it using Benjamin Moore’s color Urban Bronze. It’s a new color that I’ve been wanting to try for a long time. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.  We also added fabric to the back. Fabric can make such a difference on a hutch transformation. The unique part about this makeover was that I kept the shelves the original wood. I thought it tied in with the colors in the fabric well. What do you think?

Here are the after’s for you.

Bring on the Color – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How’s it going there? It’s life in the fast lane here at FunCycled. If you missed the announcement last week, we are moving to a new house with a better work set up. Yes, I’ll miss those beautiful barn doors, too! But our new place really is such a beauty! I can’t wait to share pictures with you once everything is finalized.
barn sale3I was able to go away on a ladies retreat with some friends at church over the weekend. The Adirondacks are so beautiful and it was a much needed time to catch my breath. Selling a house and buying a house can be so stressful. I also tried archery and it was lots of fun!
retreat1 retreat2 retreat3

One thing that has changed a bit since opening our retail store instead of doing mainly custom orders is that I paint WAY more white, black and gray furniture than I ever did. I don’t know why, but you all love buying those shades. ;) That’s ok but sometimes I just need to get my color on and this buffet seemed to be asking for it. Yeah…. they talk to me. Just kidding they don’t. They do. No they don’t. Do. Don’t. ;)

Black and Silver Mid Century Dresser Makeover – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

I hope you’re having a great week! We have had quite the week. ;) Nothing is 100% until all the paperwork is signed and a closing has happened, but so far it looks like we’ll be moving. Not the FunCycled store, our home! I’ll share more details as everything comes together, but man am I excited about what’s to come. Why am I telling you this before it’s all done? Well, we are going to have a barn sale to sell much of the furniture that I’ve had for a couple years but haven’t had a chance to re-purpose yet. Mostly because if I haven’t gotten to it in two years, I probably never will and because I REALLY don’t want to move it, ;) The prices will be amazing! I may have some personal items and I will definitely have lots of left over paint so plan to come by! We’ll be having it on October 9th and 10th from 9am-2pm! Please plan to swing by and tell all of your friends, ok?

This week’s transformation is pretty cool if I do say so myself. We bought this dresser at a barn sale that raises money to help orphans in need.  It’s my favorite reason to buy furniture… to help others. Here it is before:
IMG_1262It needed quite a bit of veneer repair, but we took care of that and sanded down the drawer fronts. We painted this dresser with black enamel paint. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.  I used ACE hardware’s Metallic Silver Finish for the drawer fronts.

Repurposed Sled into a Side Table – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

Hope you’re having a good week. It’s getting colder here in upstate NY which  means the fall foliage is coming soon. I adore fall… its crisp evenings and the amazing vibrant colors of the trees. This weekend we did our first “fall activity”, going  to a local farm festival. We went to Predel’s Ranch and had a blast on the hay ride, riding the miniature horses, and checking out all of the animals. Here  are farm photos from the day. :)
ranch4ranch3ranch2ranch1

This week’s makeover started with this small antique children’s sled.
sledA customer named Theresa sent that picture over and asked how we could turn it into something unique for her great nephew’s nursery. Her niece had used this sled when she was a child and it was one of the few memories that they still had a tangible item to go along with. She wanted to surprise her niece at the baby shower with a one of a kind present.

We decided the back arm had to be removed or it would look too awkward. So here it sits… trying to decide what to do with it. cell-phone-before-shots_20143543595_oThen John built a base for it to make it a small side table.
cell-phone-before-shots_19522633383_oWe went back and forth about whether to keep some of the original markings of the sled. Theresa and I talked it over and she decided to go with all gray so it would be neutral in any nursery. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.
The gray  we chose was Benjamin Moore’s Silver Fox color.

Black Mid-Century Number Dresser – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

I hope you’re all having a great week! School started here last week and boy oh boy do I feel like my kids have changed so much since last year.
1st dayI’m loving driving the kids to school this year! We started praying together on the way to school this year. It’s a perfect way to get some quiet time and start the day out right. The kids have seemed so much more caring about others needs since taking time to pray about them at the start of the day.

Today’s transformation is a fun one – similar to our navy number dresser from over two years ago. When Michelle came to us about wanting a makeover like the number dresser, I couldn’t wait to do it! We had to find something similar and work with it to match her room.
Here it is before:
fc-07212015-40-mark_19903588725_oWe painted this dresser with black enamel paint. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.
For the stripe, we sanded and stained the wood part then covered it before painting the black. Then we added the white stripe after we painted the black.

A Lakehouse Guestroom with a Fern Dresser – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How are you? We just got home from an amazing vacation with most of my family at Ocean City, NJ! It was HOT last week and that’s exactly what I love. It made the salty ocean warm enough for me to actually want to swim in it. We had so so much fun! Here are some pics I thought you might enjoy from the trip…
ocean city 2 ocean city Family VacationThis week’s project was nothing less than a complete delight to work on. Susan has been a huge FunCycled fan since we first made over of her daughter’s bedroom set. We then built a custom maple table and matching buffet for her dining room. She also bid on and won a dresser from our Hope International blog auction. The newest project was designing a room for their vacation lake house in Vermont. She loves grays and greens and all things nature inspired. We custom built this headboard and end stands for the guest room.

Or course!!! I love to give new life to furniture our customers already own.
new 241We sanded and stained the drawer fronts with a mixture of gray/brown stains. The outside of the dresser is painted with the color Navajo White by Benjamin Moore.  If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. We replaced all of the hardware as well.

I really wanted to incorporate ferns into the design of the room. Susan likes ferns and greens and I have always loved ferns. At our first house we had lots of ferns in a little city-sized back yard. I adored them! One day a friend decided to help me landscape and ripped almost all of them out. I was devastated and she may never live that down… I’m a bitter soul. lol On the day she moved into her new home; years later, I brought her a big potted fern. :) All that to say, I enjoyed incorporating something I love so much into a design. Ready for the after?
