Adding Modern to a Mid Century Dresser Set – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!!

How are you?? We have been INSANELY busy and if I haven’t said it in a while; thank you ALL so much for this job. You make it possible and we love it. Last week more than half of our store sold which is great!! I will have tons of new furniture in the store by this weekend so be sure to come see everything. The best part? They are some of my all time favorite designs. Just you wait!! ;)

Last week, I thought I’d take the kids on a bike ride with just me for the first time. Harmony can now ride two wheels so I thought it was time. Well… when I left the house and started going, I thought the road was straight and flat… I was wrong. It had a slight steady decline. Harmony has NOT mastered the art of breaking so she kept getting faster and faster. I tried to tell her how to slow down but it didn’t work. She took quite the crash and screamed like she was quickly approaching the pearly gates. While  I’m picking up the little bloodied girl, my son decides this is a good time to head home without me. Crossing streets alone, where I can’t see him. Yeah. Just wonderful. So I had to make Harmony get back on the bike and ride it home. There was no way to carry her and push two bikes. I even left my cell phone home to be an “unplugged” mom. That’ll teach me. So off she went dripping blood and screaming her way, peddling home while I’m sure neighbors looked on with judgmental thoughts. lol So… some moments are just that way. We try to be good moms and make memories… instead we almost lose a kids, make the other bike with blood dripping down her and leave any way of getting help at home. I just have to look back and laugh at it now, but at the time it was QUITE the day. ;)

On a happier note, I LOVE going to the Cohoes waterfalls. If you live nearby, you should really check them out. We went on Saturday night and packed a picnic with our friends, the Fischers. It was SO MUCH fun! Also, grab some ice cream at LePage’s Market just up the road and go upstairs to their balcony. You can see the falls from the balcony and it’s gorgeous.

Ok, ok. On to the furniture. You all know I am a sucker for stained drawers and paint on a mid century dresser, right? It’s a way to bring some modern to an old, ugly piece of furniture. John stopped by Salvation Army and saw this dresser. He sent me a picture of it. I wanted it so  badly!! Right away I snatched that up (the drawers weren’t in it yet, but I didn’t get a picture of it with the drawers in it).

IMG_0488

We also bought these end stands on craigslist that I thought would be a great match with this credenza.

17837977403_9fee09dc95_k

We painted the box with Benjamin Moore’s Simply White. We kept the color of the doors and just freshened them up with stain. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.
We sanded the drawer fronts down and stained them with watered down paint and stain. I don’t have just one color to tell you how, but I would say pick a stain color you like to be safe on the drawers. Here are the after’s: You may want to sit down before you look at them. ;)

Gray Ornate Buffet – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How was your week? We were unbelievably busy and I’m so grateful for it! Not complaining at all! If I didn’t get back to one of your emails or texts in the last week, please remind me. I went through my emails and think I replied to everyone, but just in case. ;)

It’s been such a hot week, but furniture painters love warm weather. The paint dries quickly with no drips, we can produce more and we can enjoy it because we aren’t freezing cold. You southern furniture painters out there… do you know how good you’ve got it?

This weeks makeover is of an old beautiful buffet from about the 20-30’s. It was only for sale at our store for a little over a week before it sold. You’ll see why I hope!

Here it is before:

05272015-25-mark_18169467885_o

We painted it with Sherman Williams color Cracked Pepper. We also lightly distressed it and glazed it using Valspar’s Antiquing glaze. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.

Are you ready for the after?

Turning a Buffet into a Wine Storage Cabinet – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

First let me say thank you to all of you who have sent me an email or called over the last week and are patiently waiting to hear back from me. We decided to go on a little camping trip in the Adirondacks. That means I tried to unplug as much as I could and it went really well. You small business owners know that means coming home to an extra week of work, but it was definitely worth it. That ALSO means that you get to see a bunch of pictures. You’re excited… I know you are!!

We had a wonderful time hanging out with this group of friends… friends that are like family!
TT 14

We did fun things like rock climbing walls! We look so cool; try not to be jealous.
TT 13 TT 12

We also went to the Wild Center which is a new exhibit at a museum in the Adirondacks.  They have a life size eagles nest you can go in. See us waaaayyy up there?  :)
TT 15

And a huge spider web trampoline!
TT 17 TT 16Going to the Word of Life Rodeo was a blast, too! Both of the kids held rats… Ew! Look how happy they both are!
TT 20 TT 19

I was so very thankful for the time with my little family. I feel like the kiddos are getting bigger so much faster these days.

As for the furniture…  I adore how we turned a run of the mill buffet into a one of a kind storage cabinet.

Here’s the buffet before:
new 228

We painted each of the pieces with black enamel paint. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. John took the front door off. Behind the door is a shelf that goes all the way through the back so he had to cut into that to give us space for the X wine storage. He built the X and inserted it into the cabinet.

We lightly distressed the whole thing and gave it the best buttery finish ever!

Navy Bedroom Set Makeover – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How was your Independence Day? We had a nice day running the store front and then watching fireworks at my brother’s house. Super relaxing and enjoyable! I hope you had a nice one, too.

For this week’s makeover, we have a typical ugly bedroom set. You know the kind you look at and think… heck no. I do NOT want that. Well in this case, you’ll see why it’s worth letting us redo it for you. This is actually a solid oak set and really well made.

Here it is before:

We painted each of the pieces with Benjamin Moore Deep  Royal 2061-10 color. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. We used Bondo to fill in the hideous fan on the top of drawer and to fill all the holes so we could add new hardware. The hardware is available at Home Depot.

Mid Century Dresser Set Makeover – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!!

Be prepared for picture overload… It’s summer time so I’m with my little ones so much more and try to make fun memories throughout the summer. I can’t help but share all of the cuteness with you. You don’t mind, right?

Last week, we celebrated Father’s Day a day late with John choosing to go to Six Flags for the day. We had worked for 14 days straight and even worked until noon that day before heading off for a much needed day of laughter at the park. It was lots of fun! I loved spending time with the kiddos. Here they are; little balls of energy running out of the park at the end of the day.

IMG_2417-1

My friend Jo Ann asked us to go on a picnic one day this past week and we tried out Schodack Island State Park. If you’re local, you should try it out. It’s got a great playground and picnic tables right along the water. We skipped rocks, had a picnic lunch and even went on an easy hike.
IMG_2432 IMG_2443-1IMG_2444

I also had the privilege of being a part of Art4Love which was a paint night at Creative Corks in Malta. The staff was so welcoming and caring. We auctioned off FunCycled home decor along with many other business donations; all to raise money for Love146.  Here we are painting…  IMG_2473-1 IMG_2478 IMG_2475-1

What a great night!

I told you it would be a lot of pictures! :) I also wanted to share with you an eye catching mid century makeover that we did a couple of weeks ago. This set sold in less than 24 hours. Remember, when you love a unique piece of furniture or art, buy it before someone else does. Sometimes they are snatched up quickly.

Here’s the set before:

new 222 new 223 new 224 new 225

If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. We painted this set with Simply White by Benjamin Moore, then we stained some of the drawers and watered down paint to use on the other drawers to show some of the wood grain. All of the  hardware is original to the set. We just cleaned it up a bit.

Rustic Hand Built Table and Oak Wheel Back Chairs – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends,

How was your week? We had a busy one! We were prepping all week for Troy’s annual River Festival. It was so much fun and our best day of sales. A big thank you to all who came,  shopped or offered a positive word of encouragement. You’re the best!
TT 7Of course this weekend was also Father’s Day… Things that I remember most about my dad as a child. The words “I love you” freely spoken so we would never wonder if it was true. The words “I’m sorry” said genuinely… even to a child. Teaching us humility and grace. Hugs and more hugs – anytime. A life of conviction and an honest heart that wants to serve our amazing Savior. I’m thankful for you, dad, and am overflowing with the blessing of a husband who is leading in those ways to our children, too. Most of all – thankful for my heavenly Father and His great love.
tt 8 tt 6

This week’s before and after is a custom built table we recently did for one of our customers. They also needed chairs and they had a little bit of a question mark in their eyes when I recommended this oak wheel back chairs to go with the table. Here they are before:

new 185 new 186

For the table, they wanted to go with a rustic chic design. We kept it all a custom color that we make mixing gray and brown stains. We lightly distressed the table after building it and a added protective clear coat to protect it long term.
06162015-4-mark_18870484141_o

What a transformation on those chairs, right?? I LOVE the chairs now that they are painted. If you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. We painted these with Simply White by Benjamin Moore, lightly distressed them and put a protective clear coat over the top. Dining room chairs get a lot of abuse so I always recommend that extra step. :) 06162015-6-mark_18247104463_o 06162015-7-mark_18870495051_o06162015-3-mark_18679986768_o 06162015-8-mark_18679991618_o 06162015-9-mark_18867741835_o

If you like this table, we can custom build it to a size that would work well in your home! Use our Contact Us form to send us a note. You can also so our Custom Built Furniture page for more examples and pricing.

Here are few of the many table designs we’ve built.

Painted Black Vanity For Sale- Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends,

How was your week? The biggest news this week is that our little Harmony graduated Kindergarten. She was chosen to be Goldilocks in Goldilocks and the Three Bears on graduation day. She was sooooo excited to be Goldilocks and couldn’t wait for us to see her. Look at all the cuteness.
tt 4

Josh also was awarded the highest honor roll student in his class. We are so proud of him for always striving for excellence.
tt 5

So many things have changed during this one school year. We found out Harmony has celiac disease. When she started the school year, her stomach hurt every day. She would ask her teachers to let her sleep through recess and she would thank me when I put her to bed at 7pm. She also was very sensitive and easily emotional. Figuring out the cause mid year was amazing as we watched her disposition change, her grades go up, and her energy sky rocket.

We also found out toward the end of the school year that Josh had hearing loss and must have been reading lips to understand his teacher. With a minor surgery, he is hearing great and loving it! I asked him what he heard in school after going back from surgery and he said “I heard everything mom”. “I couldn’t hear anything before.” So seeing him walk up there and take the highest honors knowing how hard it must have been for him to even hear this year, left me so very grateful.

Opening our storefront happened during this school year, too. I don’t know if every mom feels this way, but with every major decision we make, I think about the possible effects that it could have on our kids. I so worried that Harmony’s exhaustion or emotional moments were directly related to how busy I was opening the store during the holiday season. I worried that they wouldn’t see me enough and that our decision would make them think money was more important to me than they are. Looking back over the year, it’s been quite the opposite. The struggles with Harmony was a disease, we caught it (thank God) and it’s better. The store has allowed me to actually be with them more now then before. It’s helped me separate work time and family time. It’s helped to teach me that time with them is so precious so I need to be present and work hard at keeping my family at the forefront of my mind That’s harder than it sounds when you have 100 voices a day telling you they are the most important things. Either way, I came to the end of the year and am so very thankful for how God worked in our family. Watching Him provide, seeing Him heal and feeling His peace day by day is a beautiful thing.

On to the furniture, shall we?

We found this little desk at a 2nd hand store and it needed LOTS of love. The legs were scratched like the dickens, whatever that means! There was also lots of surface damage and back repair needed.

05272015-35-mark_17981624008_o

I thought it was a little simple by itself and thought it would be nice to turn into a vanity so I purchased a mirror at the second hand store to go along with it. Here they both are before. 05272015-38-mark_17981619590_oIf you’d like to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. Antique Lion Head and Claw Foot Sideboard For Sale – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!!

How are you?? We have had an exciting week here. John and I celebrated our 12 year anniversary over the weekend. I can’t believe it’s been 12 years since we said “I do”… I sound so old. lol Thinking about the fact that I was only 19 when I made a life long promise is a bit unnerving to me now.  I think about how wrong I could have been, but God in His grace gave me a keeper. The last three years have had tough days. One day I’ll write a post about the pro’s and con’s of working with your spouse. We’ve learned so much about each other and it’s been hard work, but I can say we’ve been enjoying each other now more than ever! I couldn’t do this without my Johnny and he couldn’t do it without me. <3

We went to Country Living Magazine’s flea market in Rhinebeck on our anniversary! We had so much fun! We met other people who have been on HGTV’s Flea Market Flip and met new show hosts on HGTV. The ideas there were wonderful, too! I can’t wait to create some new pieces based on ideas I saw there.

For today’s makeovers, I know some will disagree that I shouldn’t have painted this piece. There was a decent amount of veneer damage so know that’s one of the main reason’s we painted it. If you disagree, no need to comment below because you are on a furniture painters blog by golly. ;) It’s pretty much what you should expect to see each week. :)
