An Old Work Bench Turned Bar – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends,

This week John and I celebrate 13 years of marriage! Wowzer! I can’t even believe how old that makes me sound… er, I mean, how quickly time flew by! I’m so thankful for all we’ve been through together. John makes me laugh and cry and I wouldn’t have it any other way. He’s so hard working, such a great dad, and a loving husband. Never demanding anything, always helping, and most of all showing love and humility to me daily. God blessed me by giving me this man and I’m thankful to be his partner in life!

We took a little trip to the Country Living Craft Fair this weekend and had a wonderful time! A huge thanks to my family for watching the kiddos for us!

This week’s makeover was so much fun! Sometimes people don’t think about how an old piece can be transformed into something else that is functional and beautiful! Well, our customer Laura did! She had this old work bench in her basement and wanted to find a “re”purpose for it. She reached out to me to see if we could turn it into a bar for her.
They wanted storage for wine bottles and a shelf. They also knew they wanted it to be teal! Other than that, they gave us free reign to come up with the design. Oh boy, you know how I love that!!

It’s painted with Valspar’s Vintage Teal! After we painted it (with just one coat of paint), we heavily distressed it and glazed it using Valspar’s Antiquing Glaze. If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post.

From Hutch to Southwestern Storage Cabinet – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!!

How are you all? This has been another fast forward style week. Jam packed with catch up work as a result of last weeks funeral planning and services. My best friend from high school, Theresa, and her family came out to visit this weekend! It was so good to see her!!

I adore this week’s furniture makeover! It’s for a customer that has become a friend… Carol! She wanted a shelving unit for her house. Everywhere she looked she saw typical shelves for lots of dollars! So she decided to check with me! She went on our Upcoming Projects page and found this hutch.
We met to talk about it and she wanted open shelving so we removed all the doors on the front. The sides of the top were glass so we also built in side panels to make it look more like a shelf than a repurposed hutch. It’s painted with Benjamin Moore’s color Tropical Teal! After we painted it (with just one coat of paint), we heavily distressed it and glazed it using Rustoleum’s Antiquing Glaze. Ohhhh how I love the new hardware!
I purposely left the inside of the cabinet without distressing it because I felt like distressing it would make the piece look too country! I wanted it to be clean to also make the pieces that were inside the focal point not the paint job. As I was putting everything together, I thought of using barn board for the shelves instead of painting the shelves cream. I called Carol and she gave me the ok to do that! I absolutely love that change!!

Aged Pewter Antique Map Buffet – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi All!

How’s your week going? It’s been a long week here. On May 15th, we were woken up by a call that I had dreaded since I first met my husband. His grandmother had passed away suddenly that evening. We were in shock and filled with sadness. Not sadness for her… she’s walking on streets of gold, sitting at the feet of Jesus right now. Man oh man, we were almost jealous of her. She trustied in Christ alone for forgiveness of all she did wrong, she asked God to take His payment for sin on the cross and apply it to her account. We were elated for her, but sad for the loss of her in our lives. John grew up with his grandmother so she was like his mom. They had such a special bond and I believe he loved her more than anyone else on the planet. For that reason, I knew the next week would be tough at best. My kids had never seen daddy cry until this week. I’ve never felt so helpless in how to best support him. I’m no expert, but I prayed a lot for him, prayed for me to know how to help him and for God to make beauty out of the ashes somehow. We had never planned a funeral, never written an obituary, never ordered flowers for a casket; so it was emotionally exhausting. I saw pain in John that I wanted to take for myself but knew I couldn’t. Her funeral was on Saturday and we both felt such peace; peace that only God gives. My dad was asked to do the funeral service and the message was perfect. We honored gram’s life and how she was the example of the fruit of the spirit… “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,” Galatians 5:22. He also urged us and I want to urge you to consider eternity and what the Bible says about it. “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16 KJV Also, consider if you are living what you say you believe. “Yea, a man may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works.” James 2:18 KJV We all need that reminder, right?

Because of John’s busy week, I tried to help out by designing a buffet for our store! I’ve been trying to spend more time in the design of the pieces for our store because I was starting to feel like an order taker instead of a designer. Ever since vacation, I’ve been trying to do at least one a week.

Here’s the buffet before:
It needed so much love!! It had damaged veneer and much cleaning was needed!! So, we started with the repair and cleaning. Next, I wanted to give it an aged pewter finish. So, I hand painted it with Ace silver metallic paint. If you’re using that, I highly recommend painting outside because it’s oil based and pretty stinky. It adheres really well on anything though. I tried using the orbital sander and hated it so I used my good old hands to sand the distressed area. As I was painting, I noticed that the bottom drawer had no detailing and would be a perfect spot for a print or design. I had bought these old map posters at Ballard Design in Florida a year ago and have been waiting for the right piece to use them on.

I used spray adhesive to to attach the poster to the drawer front and then clear coated it by using a spray paint can. I thought the silver was too bright at this point so I decided to glaze the whole piece to give it a darker more aged appearance. That’s exactly what it needed!! The glaze toned it down to the hue I was looking for. And, what do you think of those globe knobs I found ;) ?!

Rustic-Modern Teal Dresser – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!!

How are you? We are finally over the flu and feeling much better! Being home with the kids for a week gave me time to get some much needed home projects done! I painted the cement on our porch and absolutely love it!
John and Josh built me an herb garden planter for Mother’s Day! I love, love it!

I can’t wait to share this week’s makeover! This is a mid century dresser, in need of some love.

We painted it with Benjamin Moore’s Color Vintage Teal! After we painted it, we glazed it using Valspar’s Antiquing Glaze. We took the drawers out before we began painting, and sanded and stained them using a white wash, gray wash and Black Bean stain by Minwax. The difference with this stain job is that after we stained it, I went through and hand sanded over the stain with a 220 grit sand paper to give it a more rustic finish.

This dresser also had an end stand, but I forgot to take a before picture of it! Here it is after! This dresser set sold within a week but there is more new pieces on our Furniture For Sale page right now!! Here are a few other new things, too!

How to Modernize a Dresser – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How are you? My kids are fighting off the flu here this week and as I type this, I feel like my head is a giant bubble and my ears are clogging so I’m going to keep today’s Tuesday’s Treasures on the shorter side.

I wanted to show you this quick transformation so you can see how new hardware and legs can modernize a piece of furniture.

Here’s what we started with… a very traditional, basic, but solid Ethan Allen dresser. I love the quality of this piece. Even though it looks like lots of little drawers, it’s actually only three so there are two big, deep drawers for lots of storage.

After we removed the hardware and started painting it, I felt like it needed something. It was just so blah!!
So, I ordered modern legs for it online and decided to give a traditional dresser a modern makeover!
We painted it with Benjamin Moore’s Color Old Navy! If you want to see how we paint furniture, check out our How to Paint Furniture post. After we painted it, we put protective clear coat over the top. The hardware is from Hobby Lobby.

Striped Farmhouse Plank Table – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How are you? We had a wonderful week away on vacation! When we first started FunCycled, I read an article about how to successfully stay in business for yourself. One of the things mentioned was traveling often. Weekend get aways and a couple vacations throughout the year. You don’t have to spend a lot – stay with friends, go camping. Just make sure that getting away from home happens and happens often. I have found this to be so very true for us. Our home is beautiful, I adore being in it and filling it with friends and family. Every day, I design and meet with creative people so I also love what I do, but home is also work. That being said, we also need to get away to think of nothing but our family. These years will slip by with my kids. I already can’t believe Josh turns 8 this week. I can’t believe how much he’s changed… toddler years didn’t bother me when they flew by, but I would love for this stage to stay forever with my kiddos by my side.

I want to encourage those who do what I do or work a lot of long days to get away and unplug. Look at those babies and not your phone. Listen to your husband. Laugh with him. Work doesn’t matter all that much at the end of our days, but the family that surrounds us and the people whose lives touch ours – they will matter. Family time makes memories, creates impressions and teaches our children what we value.

That being said, you’ll be seeing some changes here in the next few months. When I get away, I get time to think, my creativity is invigorated, everything comes alive in me again. I have some designs I want to try, some restructuring to do. Hopefully you’ll like the changes that you see! I think you will! :)

Here are some of my favorite moments from vacation…

For this week’s furniture design, I don’t have a before picture because we built it from scratch. The story behind it is fun and the design is unique so I thought I’d share it anyway.

Jackie came to us because she wanted a table built that wasn’t like anything at a store. She loves teal and red and her kitchen and dining room have that color throughout them. Jackie and her husband were on HGTV House Hunters to help them find a house locally. We enjoyed chatting about what it was like being on HGTV and had so much in common I couldn’t believe it.

She wanted a table that looked very rustic, not smooth. We had to custom order rough cut maple from a lumber yard because they don’t keep it in stock. We bought all 8 inch boards and had to plain them down. We cut them into different sizes so it had an even more unique look.

I very light painted over the table so all the grain was still showing and then John lightly sanded it so their kiddos wouldn’t get splinters.

The paint colors are Benjamin Moore’s Azurite Blue, Exotic Red and Simply White. We left one board with no paint to break it up a bit. I knew those colors would be a bit bright but once we stained it, they would be toned down quite a bit. See!!
We stained it using Minwax Dark Walnut Stain.
Here’s the rest of the table! I think this would look really nice all one color, too! Such a rustic industrial look! The best part is, House Hunters – Where Are They Now will be coming back so this beauty will be on HGTV soon! Keep an eye out for it, won’t you?!?

Gray and Teal Secretary Desk – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How are you? I hope you’re enjoying a great week! We are enjoying some much needed family time this week. Taking a quick break before the hectic (yet fun) summer begins!!

I can’t wait to share this transformation with you!! It combines my favorite colors and favorite new fabric.
Here’s the secretary desk before we got started!
It’s not that this piece was in bad condition, it was just that it had an outdated look. I wanted to take people’s breath away when they opened the front.

Upcycled Vintage Record Player – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How are you?? If you follow us on Facebook, you know that two weeks ago was rough, but this week was much better. Thanks to all of you who took time to send me encouraging notes, texts and check up on me. It meant so much!! John cheered me up by installing a barn wood wall in our entry way that I had been wanting to do this since we moved in last fall. I ADORE it !!

The wood came from a barn in western NY! Our friends Caleb and Chrisie just bought it and were going to throw this wood away, but offered it to us first. I’m SOOOO glad they did!! A huge thank you!! I heart it.

For this week’s furniture makeover, we repurposed a vintage radio/record player. It was a custom order for a new customer named Amanda. She was absolutely wonderful to work with. She said, I trust you so do whatever you think would look best. Whatever color, whatever style, whatever you think works best for this piece. That’s like music to the ears of a designer!! Thank you, thank you for being so wonderful Amanda. You were such a bright spot in my week.

Here it is before:

We talked about turning it into a wine bar, but Amanda really just needed extra storage. I thought we would take the bottom speaker section off and make the area with the record player some hidden storage. It definitely needed love and the bottom needed repair. We refinished part of the top and front and left some of the wood exposed. Then we taped off the refinished section and painted the whole piece with Valspar’s Lincoln Cottage Black. We let that dry all weekend, then taped it off again so we could paint the white stripe.

How to update your dining room table? Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How are you? I can’t wait to share this week’s furniture makeover with you! Not because it’s a one of a kind piece, but because we took something ordinary and made it anything but ordinary!! This set was a custom order for Genevieve and Telly. They had already bought our most recent Chevron Dresser and then decided to upcycle some furniture they already owned. They are in the middle of some major home renovations so forgive the before pics.

We recently posted a tutorial on how to get a rubbed through Restoration Hardware style finish. When they sent me over this set, I instantly thought that finish would look great! Most often we sand and stain the top of a table, but with the more modern style of this table, I thought the rubbed through look would be perfect.

We used a black enamel paint and then sanded through it with a 200 grit sand paper! You can read the full tutorial here. The only additional step is that you need to put at least 3 coats of a protective clear coat over the top since dining room tables get a lot of wear and tear and could get scratched easily. I also adore the fabric for the seat from Hobby Lobby!

Medium Gray Cedar Trunk and Mirrored Dresser Makeover – Tuesday’s Treasures

Hi Friends!

How was your week? We had a stressful work week. Trying to get all of our custom orders done for pick up or delivery on time led to a hectic week. And of course, on the busiest of weeks, what can go wrong … well you know the rest! We had an unexpected bleed through the day before pick up on one dresser, one of our staff used the wrong screws (they were too long) on a finished piece of furniture which led to a redo two days before that piece was to be picked up, and then, we had two customers make last minute changes the day before they were each to be delivered. All this happened when we had 16 furniture orders to wrap up. Man oh man! This is becoming a vent session. Lol! To end on a positive note, if it was easy, everyone would do it right?? ;) Also, as a small business owner, I’m very thankful to be busy. Slow is a harder type of stress than busy stress. All in all, God is faithful, He gave us strength and we started our new week with encouragement from His word with a new series at church called 30 days to live. This truly brought my perspective and attitude into check.

Josh came home from church wanting to build a Lego set based on what he learned!

“Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds a house on solid rock. Though the rain comes in torrents and the floodwaters rise and the winds beat against that house, it won’t collapse because it is built on bedrock. But anyone who hears my teaching and doesn’t obey it is foolish, like a person who builds a house on sand. For this week, we have two furniture pieces, I wanted to show you how a simple transformation can definitely revitalize a classic furniture style. Carmen came to us with her dresser and cedar trunk! The pieces had special memories for her, but she didn’t like the outdated finishes. Here they are before:

We tested out 8 different grays to makes sure we had the right hue for her bedroom set. She decided her favorite one was Chelsea Gray by Benjamin Moore (which is my favorite medium gray, too). After we painted both pieces, we lightly distressed them, glazed it using Valspar’s antiquing glaze and put protective clear coat over the top. All new hardware sealed the deal on the dresser!
