Repurposed Reed Organ Desk

Hi Friends!

How are you? I hope you’re all doing well! We had a wonderful time seeing so many of you at Troy’s Victorian Stroll last Sunday! It was such a fun day!!

I have so much to tell you about it, but that’s for another post. Let me give you a little teaser… we purchased a new home this week! We will be repurposing it room by room and sharing the story with all of you!

Eleanor was born in this home 95 years ago and has lived here her whole life. Monday, for the first time since 1818, the keys for this home were given to someone outside of the family. They were placed in our hands. We will make this beauty shine again, Eleanor. Room by room. Through sweat and I’m sure some tears, we’ll take this gift and give it our best work. Reviving the old through as much repurposing as possible. Welcome to the #repurposedideahouse by #funcycled 💕💕

I’ll be sharing more rooms and details in the days and years to come, but for this week I wanted to share a makeover of a one of a kind piece we just added to the store.
Here it is before (I actually forgot to get a picture before we took the keys out):
When I saw this piece at a barn sale, I actually thought it might be a piano. It looks so much like antique square grand pianos. Once we brought it to the shop and starting working on it, we realized that it wasn’t a piano. It had no strings inside at all! Thankfully a gentleman was shopping at FunCycled during the stroll this weekend who specialized in piano and organs. He let me know that it’s an antique Reed organ! That makes more sense! It’s not heavy because there is no sound board and it seemed like air was used to create sound, but it didn’t work any more when we got it.
Since then, we altered the top to make a flat surface with a glass top. We painted the main part of the piece with BM’s bm gentleman’s teal, glazed it, and sprayed it with a protective clear coat. We also painted all the cast iron parts of the organ and painted them gold and glazed them as well.

Ready for the afters?
